No, unlike what you wrote in your description, this cartoon is not "a rather obscure anime". It might have been so in the United States, but over here in Europe, this anime was a big hit in almost every European country back then in the 70's, and it was still shown on TV in the 2000's.

Actually, this anime did run in the US ... Wikipedia reads :

"Although the series "Princess Knight" was dubbed into English in 1970, legal disputes arose within the show's production company before it could air in the U.S.. As a result, the company ultimately scrapped the show before it could be broadcast. Copies of the finished product still managed to be leaked out, however, and the series had a limited run on American television in from the late '60s through the early '80s."

Thanks for the link, Dragonrider! I just watched episode one -- this is SO something I would have loved as a kid (but glad I can see it now). Had no idea it existed.
