I don't think ANYONE should use it. I personally don't like the word because of it's origin. And we as black people saying that to one another is just tearing us down when we need to the opposite. :/

Just to share a story with you guys, but I was in a store one day and I heard a little white girl say to her grandmother, grandma do all black people smell? I was like...what the fxxx? I look at the grandmother like she was crazy and started to think what this child family members have been telling her or what have she heard about black people. I am almost 50 yrs old, and I have always lived with and around black people. However, I remember when the word was always used to degrade a black person, and no matter how often my friends say it, I refrain out of respect. I understand today's youth (of all races) constantly use it, and I applaud them for taking a negative word and turning it into a term of endearment but the white guy should have known better than to use the word around someone he doesn't know well.
i say it around my family, but when around other people, i wait for them to say it first. it doesnt neccessarily bother me when other races say it, it all depends on the energy behind it...usually racist people say other offensive things and then nigger is the festering cheese icing on the stale cake

Well first I want to say Candy that is a fierce top that you have on...second I believe that no one should use it. Changing the way the word is spelled doesn't make it a better word to use it. The word was used to degrade minorities and now we use it as a word of endearment. I grew up using the word because I often heard it but as I got older and understood the context in which it was created I have tried to eliminate it from my vocabulary. I have a huge group of friends black and white, just about all my friends use the word nigga, some of my white friends dont and I find I dont use it as much with them as I do with my friends that do, but if they decided to use it I would not get upset. I would prefer that no one used the word. But, I know that it will be used in negative and positive aspects regardless.Of course, we all are around or friends and family that use the word and it is not really meant in a negative light and you should not be offended.But, once my oldest son(3 yr.)was playing with his uncle (35yr). I had the same problem as Candy I was stationed in Italy and was pissed when they told me...now I can't wait to go back and take my 2 boys... You are right to worry about your daughters my niece is 15 and catches much slack because she looks white (like her other side) nothing about her would tell you she's black and the girls are constantly hating on her like she chose to be mixed and they come up with any reason to try and fight her and saying "nigga" is just one of those reasons...
i think the tone and facial impression's are very important when you talk to people. But when you use the word nigger slang/ no slang its still wrong, i use it occasionally but i try not too, because i know the roots of the word, but in some countries its become common, .too common to the point where the history of the word has no importance

My group of friends is racially mixed and we have all used it without it being offensive to me. To me it's how you use the word in context and how close you are to me.
I'm not a fan of the n word. I say it sometimes when I'm around my older brother but around other people I don't use it as much. White people saying it doesn't bother me unless it seems like they say it for the sake of saying it. Like just because they have a black friend they wanna say the word.

Therefore, even if you're not saying things around them, you should still practice not using the word b/c the less it is used the more it fades away. Call me optimistic, but there were some slaves who thought that freedom would NEVER occur. I feel the same way...it all depends on how u use it..I look at "nigga" as being slang and slang is used EVERY DAY and its not going anywhere. What African Americans have the problem doing is making it seem as though we are the victim and should be the only ones allowed to say. Me personally, I don't feel that we should use the "N" word. It has soo much dark and degrading meaning behind it that just because we add the "a" instead of the "er" doesn't make it any better. We need to move away from this and look to the future instead of re-living the past.

The Skittles name thing was a BEAUTIFUL analogy! As long as the word is used and taken in the proper context then I agree, yes its cool to use. It doesn't take a genius to know when a person is trying to hurt someone with it or just trying to be down.
My Grandfather is Italian on my Mother's side and my Grandmother is Irish on my fathers side and the rest of my family is Black. I was born with dark but straight hair with green/hazel eyes and I got made fun of a lot as a child. My cousins are partly white too but they didn't really look it, so whenever I said something about black people they would all look at me like I wasn't aloud to say that. My sisters and I always felt like we couldn't say certain things because we looked like white kids.

This is my personal opinion, but i don't think its right to use nigger or nigga...i have slipped and said it on some occasions in anger (so i'm not trying to be critical toward anyone). Seeing using it as wrong is more based on my upbringing. I said it in front of my mom one time and she slapped my ass cross eyed and straightened them back up again, then strictly forbade me to use it again. But, ultimately its a word that is not going away. so, i say to each his/her own.
i feel that mixed people that identify with their african american side should be able to use the term. if u don't identify with the culture, don't use the term. Just like a Hispanic person doesn't curse someone out in french, they don't identify with that particular culture. I believe its a cultural issue.

Bottom line is the word Nigga is always going to be used around black ppl. Everywhere I go whether it be school, on the bus, around my family, Nigga is always used and nothing is going to change that. I know the real meaning is highly disrespectful, but if it was THAT disrespectful to us BLACK people, we wouldn't use it period. That is how I feel. If you don't like, why use it. A word should not be limited to a race.
I'm black and I know people have freedom of speech. But I don't think anybody should use the word period. It's stupid it's no point in using the word. People need to expand their vocabularies and find better words to use. It's just silly.
You can argue all day if black people should say the "N" word. The only thing I know is, when a black person has ever said Nigger, Nigga or any form of that. I never wondered if they really was saying...YOU NOTHING PIECE OF SHIT, YOU KNOW YOU ARE LOWER THAN ME! I always feel that when white people say the N word, even if they are so called "COOL" white people who hang around blacks , some how I feel deep down they may think that! And because they have the ghetto pass, they get that off!
Man this is the post that i needed to hear, because I just came from a barber shop and the white man told me that he didnt do mi kind of hair. So, i put it in contact that he menat he didnt do my kind of texture of hair. I was really upset until i watched this and yall made me realize.
Clearly we all know this word isnt going anywere. I know a couple of white people who use the word, some for good and some for bad. I use the word and ofcourse i use it with an "a" cause it would sound right with me saying it with an "er." I dont mind white people using it because im use to hearing them say it but its all on the tone of the word. The whole "cracker" word we might as well get rid of cause white people really dont get mad by that word.
Alot of this issue is generational .....the younger people tend to use it more than the older ones in a different way ....although I will call it like I see it ....yeah some people are NIGGERS!....never called friends niggas .But even when I use it, it is among friends and not just randomly in public .........just my spin on it !

I have a BIG PROBLEM with a person who is not saying Nigga and Nigger or anything close to it. I am Latino/Caribbean but I am Black, so I still get pissed hearing others outside of the Black community to use this very strong word with a long dark history behind it. I feel that if a person who is not black is going to say it then but should be said around friends.
One for all and all for one, if some people are using it then everyone will feel like they can say it. Why would you even WANT to use the word? There is only NEGATIVITY tied to it. I feel like you're being degraded when people use that word about you, no matter what intention and context.
I feel that if you are bold enough to say the word, then you are bold enough to receive it from all people. Only people who know nothing use that word. And it is so sad when black say that there is a difference with the "a" and "er". There is no difference. It just shows that you are illiterate and instead of using the word, why don't you learn about the word. Ignorance is surely not bliss.
It is very simple. The use of the word is all about context and the intention of the person who is saying it. Most of us who were not born yesterday & we know when someone is using it in a friendly way, in a hostile way, or in an offensive way.
And we all know that saying the word with "er" at the end automatically turns it into a fighting word.
This word will never go away as long there is an English language. It is part of the culture. We just have to deal with it.

I think that the only way that the N word will no longer be the "N" word is if people of african decent stop taking offense to it.

I am almost 50 yrs old, and I have always lived with and around black people. However, I remember when the word was always used to degrade a black person, and no matter how often my friends say it, I refrain out of respect. I understand today's youth (of all races) constantly use it, and I applaud them for taking a negative word and turning it into a term of endearment but the white guy should have known better than to use the word around someone he doesn't know well.

Well first I want to say Candy that is a fierce top that you have on...second I believe that no one should use it. Changing the way the word is spelled doesn't make it a better word to use it. The word was used to degrade minorities and now we use it as a word of endearment. I grew up using the word because I often heard it but as I got older and understood the context in which it was created I have tried to eliminate it from my vocabulary. I have a huge group of friends black and white, just about all my friends use the word nigga, some of my white friends dont and I find I dont use it as much with them as I do with my friends that do, but if they decided to use it I would not get upset. I would prefer that no one used the word. But, I know that it will be used in negative and positive aspects regardless.Of course, we all are around or friends and family that use the word and it is not really meant in a negative light and you should not be offended.But, once my oldest son(3 yr.)was playing with his uncle (35yr). i think the tone and facial impression's are very important when you talk to people. As for the lil' babies, we have to lead by example. Therefore, even if you're not saying things around them, you should still practice not using the word b/c the less it is used the more it fades away. Call me optimistic, but there were some slaves who thought that freedom would NEVER occur. One more thing...and I want ya'll to just think about this! I have read a comment about our ancestors being enslaved and held captive for many years and how they were called the "N" word. Okay (lol)! If they were alive today, do you think they would appreciate our current black brotha's and sistah's to fight to keep a slang term of a word that was once so condescending towards blacks???? I believe M.L. King, and so many others would be disgusted by the idea or the thought to even exist.

I have heard this numerous of times, "It's used as a term of endearment." Okay, lets think a little deeper. Any "terms" that are use as an "endearment" are positive right?? In this case, when black people use this "term of endearment" it's positive. However, when a white person uses this "term of endearment" then its NEGATIVE! I wonder why!!??? As a black man, I greatly oppose to the word "Nigger" and "Nigga"! In my opinion, I think the slang term used today is making mockery of the original word that once meant something in the past. Second, who are we to say who can and can't use the "N" word??? How can one race tell ALL of the others races, "Oh, you can't use this word!" Lol...this is America. Last but not least, black people sound ignorant and its contradicting for not doing exactly what they are preaching to other races.

Personally, me bein white I do say nigga. & i've been sayin it all my life that it's now burned into my vocab. I have to catch myself sometimes just because you don't know how everybody feels about the word & you don't know if they're gonna flip if you say "what up my nigga". All my friends use the word, white & black & nobody has a problem with it. But do i think this word will go away? no. It just has too much history & has established it's own meanings that it isn't goin away anytime soon..

Im black and I dont really use it...I guess bcuz I have young kids and I just dont want to use it. Not bcuz i feel its wrong its just that its not a word I use. But to be honest "nigga" aint going nowhere anytime soon.

I feel the same way...it all depends on how u use it..I look at "nigga" as being slang and slang is used EVERY DAY and its not going anywhere. What African Americans have the problem doing is making it seem as though we are the victim and should be the only ones allowed to say. So, by saying that no other race perspective can use "nigga" to me is like saying no other race outside the black community can use SLANG. However, the word "nigger" is completely different.

This is a really thouchy subject cuz theres so many definition to it! I dont know if you guys seen this on the news but there were talking about a (white) teacher who called his (black) student nigga. Saying that he didn't see the big deal cuz he didn't say nigger but nigga and was explaning the difference! I got offended by it cuz we grew up with the mentality that only black people can say it but should we? I guess there'll be no end to this subject!

I love the fact that black people have taken a word that was so hateful and made the connotation of it be positive.That just goes to show our resilience as a people and I believe that older older generations (who were actually called the name out of malice in the past) are the ones who are causing raucous over it. Its just like the dreads. B. Marley changed the connotation from negative (white people saw dreaded hair and called it dreadful) to something that is positive and accepted!Great vid!

i think neither one of those words should be used. even if you "water" it down with an "a" at the end, it is still the same thing and it's a nasty word to be coming out our mouths no matter what color you are.

Exactly it's the EMPOWERING of the word. Why would I give a racist person more power using a word thats just a word. They use that because there is nothing else they can possibly use to hurt me other than physically doing something, and even then they'll get arrested. You can't get arrested using the word nigger so thats why racist people use it.

Me personally, I don't feel that we should use the "N" word. It has soo much dark and degrading meaning behind it that just because we add the "a" instead of the "er" doesn't make it any better. We need to move away from this and look to the future instead of re-living the past.

if there was a difference b/w the -a and the -er at the end then why do we get mad when people who are not black use the word (nigga)?? i think everyone needs to stop using the 'N' word then there wouldnt be a problem. Personally i dont see a difference between either one. Nigger or nigga either way it seems to be referring to black people. i dont want to be called either one. A nigga(er) is the person that uses that word.

I use it and my friends use but I feel I'm more on your viewpoint. It depends on the tone and where the person using it is coming from. I'm black and my best friend is white but the Lord above knows that she is an Oh oh Oreo cause she blacka than me!! All my friends use it but we use Nigga not nigger and there's the difference. I don't think it'll ever stop. Black people take it and make it their own turn it into positive which is why they feel more entitled then any other race to the word.

i'm mixed with black and white. and i feel terrified to say that word. Even though my friends may say its okay to say it when im around them. Like if i say it kiddin around i look around before I say it. But i honestly feel like no one should say it. Me personally have witnessed to many white people saying it. and I mean ok its not okay for everyone to use. Like when my friends come over they say it and stuff and im like damn stop usin it lol. Either way I still don't think people should use the word. For example in Detroit at the naacp convention in 07 they ''Burried the N word'' symbolicly. Plus its been use for hurt so much. But who knows, in 20 to 100 years it might be accepted by all(Sorry, not for me).

The Skittles name thing was a BEAUTIFUL analogy! As long as the word is used and taken in the proper context then I agree, yes its cool to use. It doesn't take a genius to know when a person is trying to hurt someone with it or just trying to be down.

My Grandfather is Italian on my Mother's side and my Grandmother is Irish on my fathers side and the rest of my family is Black. I was born with dark but straight hair with green/hazel eyes and I got made fun of a lot as a child. My cousins are partly white too but they didn't really look it, so whenever I said something about black people they would all look at me like I wasn't aloud to say that. My sisters and I always felt like we couldn't say certain things because we looked like white kids.

This is my personal opinion, but i don't think its right to use nigger or nigga...i have slipped and said it on some occasions in anger (so i'm not trying to be critical toward anyone). Seeing using it as wrong is more based on my upbringing. I said it in front of my mom one time and she slapped my ass cross eyed and straightened them back up again, then strictly forbade me to use it again. But, ultimately its a word that is not going away. so, i say to each his/her own.

i feel that mixed people that identify with their african american side should be able to use the term. if u don't identify with the culture, don't use the term. Just like a Hispanic person doesn't curse someone out in french, they don't identify with that particular culture. I believe its a cultural issue.

Bottom line is the word Nigga is always going to be used around black ppl. Everywhere I go whether it be school, on the bus, around my family, Nigga is always used and nothing is going to change that. We feel we have to right to say it and half the and half the time black ppl just say it because they've probably grew up hearing that all the time and it's second nature to them.

Well, my white friends hardly use it, but not in a rude manner and so I allow it. I believe, if black people want to use it like it is a-okay and has no meaning, white people should do so also. I know the real meaning is highly disrespectful, but if it was THAT disrespectful to us BLACK people, we wouldn't use it period. That is how I feel. If you don't like, why use it. A word should not be limited to a race.

Clearly we all know this word isnt going anywere. I know a couple of white people who use the word, some for good and some for bad. I use the word and ofcourse i use it with an "a" cause it would sound right with me saying it with an "er." I dont mind white people using it because im use to hearing them say it but its all on the tone of the word. The whole "cracker" word we might as well get rid of cause white people really dont get mad by that word.

Alot of this issue is generational .....the younger people tend to use it more than the older ones in a different way ....although I will call it like I see it ....yeah some people are NIGGERS!....never called friends niggas .But even when I use it, it is among friends and not just randomly in public .........just my spin on it !

I have a BIG PROBLEM with a person who is not saying Nigga and Nigger or anything close to it. I am Latino/Caribbean but I am Black, so I still get pissed hearing others outside of the Black community to use this very strong word with a long dark history behind it. I feel that if a person who is not black is going to say it then but should be said around friends.

I feel that if you are bold enough to say the word, then you are bold enough to receive it from all people. Only people who know nothing use that word. It is very simple. The use of the word is all about context and the intention of the person who is saying it. Most of us who were not born yesterday & we know when someone is using it in a friendly way, in a hostile way, or in an offensive way.
And we all know that saying the word with "er" at the end automatically turns it into a fighting word.
This word will never go away as long there is an English language. It is part of the culture. We just have to deal with it.
