Just last Friday, August 5th, I had the honor of jamming on this song, and Francine by ZZ Top with Spirit's original bassist, Mark Andes. @goldenoldiesPete They are great ! I read that the drummer is the father of the lead singer/guitarist Randy California who sadly died not so long ago in Maui while trying to save his son from drowning. I wish they were all still here.
@goldenoldiesPete - It's so sad - yet, HEROIC!!!! Randy California saved his twelve-year-old son, Quinn, on January 2, 1997, from a rip-current in Molokai, Hawaii, but, he drowned! R.I.P. Randy!!
@justcallmeassinine - On a different note, Ed Cassidy, the drummer of Spirit, WAS the step-father of Randy California; and, influenced John Bonham of Led Zeppelin with his long drum solos using only his bare hands! :)
@classiclistener01 Yeah they were great.I guess you could say that they were one of the groups that comprised the essence of the sixties. And somehow not as well known as the others.
in JR high when this came out- wow ! i sqore when i got my license i would play this down PCH while haulin ass ! i did and keep on doing it every weekend -
Saw SPIRIT way back in '71 or '72 in LA. They were the opening act for The Moody Blues...but because I was... "peaking".... when they took the floor...they are the ones I remember with great fondness and especially THIS song...to say the least....awesome.
God how I love this fucking song. The memories of my youth and the best of times. The chills and memories this song brings on are endless. I am 59 and can't believe how fast life has flown by. The songs of this era will live on forever so pure so innocent so great. Randy California and Spirit rock thank you for this song and all the memories Surfratt THIS IS WHAT REAL MUSIC SOUNDS LIKE oh how I miss those days never forget my friends never forget. I GOT A LINE ON YOU BABE
@delta9779 Man, you summed the whole thing up in your comments!!!!! Damn, this song just kicks ass and does it for me, and I'm a die hard early Beatles fan! Just looking at these guys in Spirit is so inspiring. Thank you for your writing and for letting me know there's a kindred spirit out there!!! Take 'em easy, man (I'm 57!!)
@The1953LadyJane Yes I am out there and I live much to much in the past but these songs of this era take me back to the greatest times of my life. LadyJane I am glad to hear your comments and to know that I also have a Kindred Spirit :) I miss those times so much but they will always live in me through these songs. Wow where has life gone but in songs like this I will remember and rock on forever I got a line on you Babe . Never forget LadyJane and let these songs and times live in us forever :)
@delta9779 ..Delta...I was in college when this song came out., living in DZ house. My husband and I were talking about this very subject last. He wanted to know how our son can 38 now. I told him we BLINKED!!! Time goes by so fast.
@delta9779 Hello 59 year old! lol *+* Today I turn 55. This song was played early this morning on CoasttoCoastAM . I had to gallivant to McDonalds's to use their Internet so that I could come here to YouTube to play this song and share it on Facebook. I do miss the good ole days here in Houston growing up.
Better by the freaking Guess Who, are you kidding. The guess who suck. You must be Canadian ay. I am proud that I dont have one lousy guess who album or cd in my vast collection.
@vailko Played it in a band when I was 16 too (in B I think) - it was a local band standard, along with stuff like Morning Dew and Hush (Deep Purple).
October 1991 at Mile Square Park in LA "Spirit" came together to advertise their new release, "Chronicles" and put on a fantastic concert. The Doobie Bros., Dr. Demento, and others were there. Spirit put on one helluva show. This was before Randy California and John Locke passed away. Stairway to Heaven was taken and inspired from a Spirit song, the theme to Charlies Angels was from a "Fresh Garbage" riff. Spirit was just one really great band that was sorely underrated.
feb.2 2011 I recall one of the best concerts ever: SPIRIT and The Moody Blues at the LA Forum, at the height of 12 dreams w/dr.Sardonicus era. Totally unreal, both groups. SPIRIT, the sound of so.cal, yes! Remember Topanga Canyon, too.
I heard this song as a kid and thought how could I have never heard of this amazing band from the 60's. I know most all the bands from that time and these guys got no press, mostly word of mouth following, which was incredibley strong.
Very few people know this band ( Spirit) by name however this song does get a fair amount of airplay on the classic rock format stations . Far from one-hit wonders they have a if not a large, a well rounded catalog of semi-forgotten gems .
I got to know Randy when he used to come to the Buffalo Rose in Golden, CO. He dated one of my friends. Good guy, very reserved and a kick ass guitar player. Sad he passed - saved his son from drowning in Hawaii.
1971, went to a spirit concert really early.Played frisbee with a cool dude we met and hung out for a while. later that night at the show guess who came out and put on the guitar. Yep.. Randy C. our frisbee dude... cool dude and humble man. 40 years later I still listen to Dr. Sardonicus.
i saw spirit at the west palm beach auditorium with my younger brother...made my way up to the stage ands really enjoyed the concer good music..good smoke
It was the end of the Summers of Love 1972 my wifes cousin lived in Topanga Canyon while we were sitting in there backyard all the sudden we heard this song "I Got A Line On You Babe" blasting out loud, we thought someone was playing it on a tape recorder or something. We walked down to the fence and there was the entire Spirit Band practicing in their backyard. Little did we know they lived right there, they let us come over the fence and listen while they practiced...It was "far out".
@neoshoman Neat story ! I grew up in San Diego and went to college back east to Illinois Sate Umiv. This song was played constantly on the fm stations in our college area ! Long live Spirit ! Love Ed Cassidy and those inverted bass drums ! Did he have those in his back yard ? Rip Randy.
In an age of long hair, I remember seeing the dude with the shaved head, sayin' WTF! Today, it's every bald guy you see, But then (40 years ago) it was just fucking wrong! Ha!
This is one of those great songs that fully deserves a remastering!
SURFRATT WHAT DID I DO FOR YOU TO REMOVE MY HIGHEST RATED COMMENT? WOW I SO ENJOYED COMING TO YOUR UPLOAD AND LISTENING TO THIS SONG AND READING THE COMMENTS I GUESS YOU DON'T WISH ME TO BE PART OF THIS ANYMORE. wow SURFRATT wtf I really felt good being rated so high. I will always love this song and thanks for posting it.
@drummss Thanks Drummss for the kind words but wnat for whatever reason SURFRATT chose to remove my HIGHEST rated comment and I have no Idea why he did that. Oh well I will always love this song and all the songs of that Majical Era and I am so glad I was part of those times. These songs will live on in us forever never forget my friend never forget. Be well and remember I Got a Line on You lol yeaaaaahhhhh
This, along with The Human Beinz' "Nobody But Me" , Jimi Hendrix' "All Along The Watchtower," and Cream's "White Room" define rock in the late '60s!! Thanks surfratt!!!
Whatever happened to free-form FM radio? I dare any millionaire/billionaires out there to build, run, support a super-powerful signal AM or FM radio station with live, intelligent, music-loving DJs who are free to choose and play any cut, no matter how deep, no matter how far-out, no matter how cool or obscure. I dare you. Bill Gaines et al aren't Jack Squat if they can't pull that off. Oh, and how about a decent passenger railroad while you're at? The proof is in the pudding.
I remember the cheerleader's and pep squad working a routine to this song in the gym while we worked out in the aux.....heard it over & over & over but I didn't mind a bit !
As I watch these precious oldies videos that some fanatic has preserved over the decades 2share on YT, I thank Heaven 4such packrat fans. If some time traveler had appeared 2my teen self in the 60s 2tell me I'd still be appreciating these same songs in my 60s, I would've dismissed it as a hippie acid trip. It's stunning still 4 1 who was utterly obsessed with music, reaching back from the 50s and on and on past the MTV era. Don't appreciate most of today's so-called hits. Artificial, I'm afraid!
For those that might be interested, among others, Alice Cooper did a good cover of this song for the Iron Eagle movie soundtrack. Sounds OK to me, but I'll always like the original.
delta & vwitch Im with you! At 631/2 I remember Spirit from their beginning. They were HUGH at Il State U and most of us had all their albums. what a great song this was & to listen to it now brings back so many great memories !OMG where has the time gone ? Cant believe I am retired.
@dbrinkm1 lol I will retire soon and hope I am still around to keep enjoying this great song and all music from that era. We were lucky dbinkm1 to witness and be psrt of such a great time of life and all the great music. Be well and live it love it and feel it it was our time.
Listening to Spirit since '68. rank them right up there with bands like Badfinger. Always marveled at the way Mark laid down the base. In this song he's simply just solid; in all the other recordings he had to be amazingly versatile and creative, always up to the task. Ed's background was Jazz; Mark's bass and John Locke's keyboards perfectly compliment Ed's percussion and Jay always seemed to find a way to do the vocals to fit. Randy's guitar work goes without saying, of course.
When I saw them in 73, the drummer was almost the show. He had a huge drum kit and was flanked by two Chinese gongs probably 10 ft round that he played. Quite impressive.
Great song and wish they had done more like this. I did pick up this record and most of the songs were jazz-oriented and not nearly as good. Even the great Fresh Garbage doesn't rock like this.
@edb081904 -Yeah, the drummer-somebody Cassidy was Randy California's step-dad--Randy got the Cali part of his name from Jimi Hendrix. He played in an early band w/him.
@howst3 Maui Howie my friend and you are so so right we did grow up with the "REAL" shit. Never to be forgotten. We were so lucky to be part of the best music times of all times. :) yeah
Hey Delta, man I chuckled when I read your comments...I'm 59 also...and where did the years go?! Love this song, brought back soooo many memories. I can keep this song in my head at work, driving, running,
@Indicounselor I agree indicounselor I miss those times so so much but thanks to us and songs like this we will always be there in our memories. I will always love and cherish those times. Be well my friend
I hear ya delta 9779 .... This song takes me right back to some of my most precious memories.. i saw them in hawaiii at the Waikiki shell outdoor ampitheatre around in the early 70's...What an awesome show....I saw them with my girl at the time who not too soon after went on to become my wife.... We loved the concert, and the romance just kept right on going,,, Thanks to Spirit for contributing to some of the best times of my life ......
Randy California was Great...Saw them (Spirit) in Chicago in 1977 with Nils Loftgren as back up....Not the original line up but they were still Great....
I'm 62 and pretty much a dead man now but I do so love tis song and its vibrancy. It makes me remember I lived once upon a time.

1971, went to a spirit concert really early.Played frisbee with a cool dude we met and hung out for a while. later that night at the show guess who came out and put on the guitar. Yep.. Randy C. our frisbee dude... cool dude and humble man. 40 years later I still listen to Dr. Sardonicus.

@brilloart Wasn't the drummer the father of one of the band members?? I remember thinking how "old" he looked (sheesh).
edb081904 1 year ago
@edb081904 -Yeah, the drummer-somebody Cassidy was Randy California's step-dad--Randy got the Cali part of his name from Jimi Hendrix. He played in an early band w/him.
