This seems to be taking place quite close to 1989 -or was it always the case that East Germans tried to get to the West through Prague? Thanks for posting --very nice film!
@vHumboldt77 The Czechoslovakia was (I think) the only country East German citizens didn't need a visa to visit. Prague was a popular travel destination. And it was "easier" to get from there to the West. (Though still not easy.)
Another "easier" way out was to take a trip to Hungary, and swim across the Balaton Lake to Austria. The water is very shallow, and with a little luck, you made it across. (To get into Hungary, though, you needed a visa, which not everyone could get.)
amazing for the 80s! couldnt have been done like that back then in the UK for sure!

Lake Balaton doesn't border Austria - no matter how shallow the water is.

This is so sweet. May all walls between such people crumble and fall into dust.

@vHumboldt77 It was filmed in 1985. The outside scenes in the East were done with "secret camera" under the cameraman's jacket.
It's a wonderful film. ...Very 80s... And yet it still works magic today.
