Recently I tried the Suji Halwa but it was quite Orange or close to red in color. Is that because they use coloring or if there is some other recipe for it ?
My family likes the sheera to be of a drier, crumbly, upma-like consistency. I was able to make it like that once. However, more often than not, my sheera is soft and halwa-like. Any suggestions, tips, advice would be highly appreciated! Keep up the awesome work! Thanks in advance.
If everything else is okay, you may just want to reduce the amount of liquid by a bit. Also, roasting the sooji properly helps each of the grains to be separate.
@ShowMeTheCurry Thanks. I bought fine semolina and used ratio: "1 cup of Semolina" to "3 cups of liquid." In my case the liquid was semi-skimmed milk. The result came out great - fluffy pudding - even though i felt a pain in my chest, haha. I guess what happened is that the video camera made it look like a sticky sauce, so i got a bit worried :-)
i will try it this sunday, my sister had explained it to me on phone how to make it, but its always better to watch videos because you always end up learning a thing or two, like they said you have to keep moving the suji in pan otherwise it will burn. i have to goto grocery store to get sugar and ghee, i will buy brown sugar from trader joe's that very good and healthy
From where I'm from the one for Satyanarayan puja is made from equal parts suji, sugar, milk, ghee, banana. It is super rich and absolutely delicious but not as healthy as the one you guys made.
Hey I have always noticed u use this non stick vessel in most of your recipes. I am not able to find this kind of one in the market which is so deep. If u guys don't mind could u let me what brand it is , so that I could get one for myself.
Ghee is clarified butter and is available in Indian grocery stores. You can make it at home as well. Please see our video on Homemade Ghee on our youtube channel or our website ShowMeTheCurry (dot) com.
Thanks for the wonderful recipes.I have tried many of your recipes, they turn out to be yummy. Your this recipe says half cup sooji and in grams its 125 gms. But as per my knowledge 1 cup equals to 125 gms. Please tell me the exact amount of sugar and sooji .Thanks again
My 2-year-old daughter Esha just loves the Sheera. I roast half banana while roasting the rava. Also, I do it with milk and put 5/6 threads of Kesar while microwaving the milk for a couple minutes. When I was in India, I used to add a little mango pulp to it..which used to give sheera a wonderful color and flavor of mango...Just my 2 cents.
wow - all 3 recipes I viewed today happened to be about suji! the laddoo the upma and this. it seems to be very versatile!
I must try grinding saffron as my family usually take it whole, put it in a spoon of luke warm milk and allow to soak and infuse flavors and then mix into mixture (in any sweet dishes)
This was also served as a hospital meal in UK and it said it was steamed, just a thought I was pondering over how it might be made but fresh is the best!

But your recipe is wonderful.

@dbiswas : Most times, commercially, they do add color to Suji Halwa to make it look more appealing and attractive :)

this is not how i remember it... i thought Sooji or Suji was supposed to be thick & fluffy, almost like couscous. Any thoughts?
PhantomAct 9 months ago
@PhantomAct
Sooji is available in many different textures. Maybe you had one that was very coarse but halwa is not as grainy as couscous.

Serious Question: Can I substitute margarine, or some other non-animal-based product, for ghee?
Question out of sheer curiousity: I have always wondered, what would happen if you used all-purpose flour?
ija8879 1 year ago
The Margarine may work (but have never tried it) but the All-Purpose Flour will be a total disaster (it'll be all lumpy and gooey).

I also made this today. And I think it worked out good and I love milk instead of water. thx for recipe.

has anyone made it with only plain atta (wheat flour) like the one made in Gurudwara parshada
kaku0307 2 years ago
Yes, you can substitue the atta (whole wheat flour) for the suji. It is very diffenet in taste but very flavorful.
Enjoy!
ShowMeTheCurry 2 years ago
yes, but with whole wheat flour u need to add more ghee (in this case almost 1 in order to have the right consistency.
