German cars breakdown in style! If you compare french cars with middle weight german cars, they are far better...VW, opel and the low models of Audi and BMW is waste of money!
@dunti21 So explain me why the french cars are doing better or the same as the german cars according to the reliability classement by the ADAC(german) and DEKRA(french) ? French cars have better equipements, lower price, and better reliability. And I find the design of all the new models very nice.
Guys, my dad bought this car temporarily and I must say, this car does NOT feel German at all. My dad had a Mercedes E220 2006 before someone crashed it and the Citroen C5 is uncomfortable; suspension not very good. If you have the money to buy a brand new CItroen C5, then you're better off buying a used Mercedes E class. (Dad considering in buying the new E class, but excluding the gadgets, the new model is identical to the previous ones in terms of driving.
I have the 2litre hdi 6 speed automatic. Averaging 32 mpg. The ride on the hydro is nothing special the rear end is baggy. But its very quiet. The half leather seats are very narrow and despite all the electric adjustments are uncomfortable. The main problem is visibility. Thanks to the ncap 5 rating i find it hard to see out of! The A pillars are very wide and can cover a car on a roundabout.
I've had my 2001 C5 for eight years - no problems so far and 160k miles covered. Still swift in that whooshing diesel way and economical, and comfortable, and very, very French in feel. I like the look of the new car - hope it is still Citroeny! I might buy one in a few years.
@blackaxe36 - Both are excellent cars, absolutely no doubt there. I have a C5 though, so yes I bought one over the Mondeo. Never regretted it once. It's been an absolute pleasure to live with from day to day. I DO like the Mondeo, though... just prefer the C5 :)
@blackaxe36 Mondeo has better engines. And less complicated. Go for the Mondeo if you are looking for a sporty and dynamic car. C5 for better comfort and long-range driving.
There is a misconception that dominates. Germans don't make as much well engineered cars as cars with teutonic aptitude. Don't get confused. Engineering-wise the C5 is one of the most (if not the most) well engineered cars in its class, not to mention upper classes. Just contemplate on the technology of the suspension. And that alone doesn't describe the sense of driving a C5 with a hydropneumatic suspension.
bmw - or citroen. Im sorry but citroen every single time, had them from new and its always been my favourite manufacturer. ive had german cars and theyre just not nice to drive compared to citroens or have the same passion about them! Im not saying theyre bad heaven forbid (some really are bad) but nobody puts more into their cars than the french manufacturers passion wise.
@CitroenScotland - Been a Citroen customer myself since I first started driving 7 years ago. I have one of these C5s since its release in Ireland in May 2008 (so 3 years old) and the reliability has been flawless, the build quality has been flawless - the car still looks and feels like the day I drove it home for the very first time. Likewise the comfort is in a different league and overall it's been just such a pleasure to own.
@CitroenC407 completely agree - i now have a job at Peugeot and to be honest, ok its a different manufacturer but both the 407 and c5 are superb, but i still would take the c5 over the 407 anyday, its just one of those cars that says "wow" regardless whether some people thing "meh.....just a citroen" when they drive one they really start to appreciate it
@CitroenScotland - Oh yeah, definitely in terms of looks the C5 has that "wow" factor. I have seen it with alot of my mates. They talk about the new Passat as looking great, the new Mondeo for looking great and (one I agree with) the new Insignia looking great (and it does). Not one person turns to me and says "that C5 you have is nice". They just do the "meh... just a Citroen" thing that you mention above. They are the ones losing out, though. The C5 continues to be my first choice.
@enzo360x Its two different shows you twat. Top Gear never would've tested the C5, where fifth gear actually gives you advices a normal man can use. I dont need to know how fast the ferrari is, because it wont affect my life. Although if i were to buy a new car, the C5 would be an option - thanks to fifth gear - not top gear..
Oh come on - all you critics with your Brand Snobbery - this is an excellent car. Mine is coming close to 3 years old now, bought one of these C5s on release date in Ireland, and nothing has broken, come loose, looks worn in any way, it still looks feels and drives exactly as it did the day I drove it out of the showroom. Reliability? Flawless. What a machine.
@CitroenC407 Thoroughly agree. What's more, I'm in Ireland too and I've had 3 Xantias, all beauties reliability-wise. Way ahead of Nissans, mercs etc whose reliability has slid while Citroens has improved massively. I'm on 190k on a Hdi 90 with original clutch. Rural roads, including mountains paths when I feel like it. Tough as nuts. Before that, I had a 2.0 16v petrol and before that, a 1.9td with 180k when sold. Citroens are real cars, not just the usual matrix homogenous mind-control.
@Anrirua I'm glad to see you have had good success with the brand :) I had an AX10 for 2 years as my first car, never let me down once and it was 13 years old at the time I bought it. Stepped up to a C2, C4 and now the C5 and they have all been great. The C5 has made the 3 year mark now as of the end of this month and it's still perfect. Citroen have really upped their game in recent years and are making well built, good looking and reliable cars. Cheap to buy, run and insure too.
Oh no, a French car full of electrics....its gonna expire on the side of a cold wet road in the middle of the night somewhere. All electrics will have given up and that will be that. Just like the Renault Laguna, the worst car on the road.
@scotioti yeah...definatly...I had a Mercedes AMG c220 and its almost the same thing...its a really quiet car, and when i´m driving it i really don´t fell any vibration...i´m very satisfied with the bougth.like i said befour...here in portugal...i paid 35000 Euros...its a liltle to much
I think french cars can be an enigma well built in some areas very cheap in others like trim.......nasty plastics poor electronics and quirky mechanics
@RogueBrit Did you sit in the C5? Nasty plastics? Man, this cars interior can put Bmw 3 to shame. The only car that feels better built in the class is Audi A4, and thats only because it costs twice as much.
This is a great car ! I love the design , shape , look and overall feel . My dad was looking at one as the new everyday car , we all loved it , but decided to get a c6 . I still love this , and highly recomend it , i prefer the dash in the c5 for quality feel . Im so glad this car has become a hit in ireland ! I see quite a few!
This is a great looking car and, even if Citroën tried to copy some German elements, they retained enough of their own character to make a car that still stands apart, allowing it to have a unique personality instead of being cookie-cutter.
If only these were sold in the U.S., they could very well sell like hotcakes.
@Watcher3223 you are absolutely right on the money, could not agree more with you.. I really am praying for them to open some dealers here in the U.S. Check out Citroen C4 too absolutely amazing hatch coupe. Citroen's stylings are timelessly chic ! cheers.
problem with the C5 is it's always had high depreciation, and this can be an advantage if you want one in 5 years, which I may do! It will be cheap and now that it's a 5 star Euroncap. it's as good as all the rest
I have always loved the looks of this C5 Citroen, even when I saw the orrigional drawings in some magazine. Superb car !! How many saloon cars look beautiful on the road? Not many !!
The incredibly gifted French driver Sebastian Loeb has just won the world rally championship for the 6 th consecutive year. He always drives Citroen. The Citroen C5 won "The Semprit Car of the Year 2009" in Ireland against very strong opposition. In Japan they won 2 nd prize for their "Car of the Year 2009". A little Toyota won. Citroen have reason to be proud.
just got back from citroen's showroom.i've jizzed just by test driving this one.honestly im trying my best not to overstate this car but he's right, citroen managed to do a quantum leap for this ride.the handling are nearly as good as a bmw,the comfort and smoothness..well it's purely magnificent.drank a can of juice without spilling it while manuevering sharp turning.if you're a fan of stability then this is the car for you.if you're a fan of speed and fast pick up then it's not.one wrd.awesome.
I find this car extremely beautiful when compared to other offerings in its class. If you go over the options list, you'll also come across a number of options normally only found in higher-end machines.
The Citroen C5 offers more bang for the buck than any other car of comparable cost.
Most people think german cars are ultimate engineering, thei're not. Citroen wants to sell, so, lets give people what they want and make money! French carmakers do not need to prove that they know how to build cars.
i guess you drank a little bit too much of your red wine. germans invented the car and own the most successful brands on the planet. problem french cars (until the new citroens & peugeots) always had, were rust and general build quality. looks like they sorted this out, so bravo PSA!
@kraenk12 and i have a lot more in the wine cellar! let's see... piles of rust... 106 ?? 206 ?? oh ... i forgot to mention the 205...! i guess you drive a polo so no argue there!
@kraenk12 I'm not agree with you it's the Frenchs whoe invented the car (or the first production car) and it was Panhard & Levassor a few years before Daimler beside they new heach other very well .
So the first brand of car in the world was Panhard and not mercedes ...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The car is not bad but...come on guys...it's a Citroen !!! it's a funeral car...I'll never buy one of these...i like sport cars...and french cars have nothing to do with sport cars...they are slow...big...heavy.... I think that the only thing that Citroen could give to you is comfort..smooth ride..easy to drive..and lots of space..but come on, you must be an old man do buy that car...Buy Nissan Skyline and put an end to all ;) !!! French cars..pff..bullshit
Ever owned a French car? French cars usually isnt that heavy and the French have made the best chassis for ages(just look at Citroëns sucess in rallying, Peugeots sucess in Le Mans and Renaults sucess in Formula 1).
Why buy a soul less ricer that will rust to dust in 20 years time, and would still be outmanouvered by a way cheaper 15 year old Xantia Activa?
@MadDogMcGree cheaper as well and u get similar qualities if u are careful, the only problem is that germans have the reputation but its just a badge really
As this car won "The Semprit Irish Car of the Year 2009" and also came second to Toyota in The Japanese "Car of the Year 2009", it must be well built.
so strong & well built that the underneath of them rusts away like a 14 yearold car only after 4 years like all the other Citroens do & the dials & switches always feel like they are gonna drop off any second! Just like my dads Xsara Picasso & my aunties C3! The foot pedals are so friggin awkward on them anyway, too small in size & too far apart from eachother so you drive on tip-toes & play guess the pedals with your feet while you are driving!
I know people who have done a big mileage in this car and absolutely love it and have had no trouble at all. It is actually very heavily built with good materials. It is not a Citroen of old. I know there was trouble with the old Picassos.
Its probably much better than the new 2008 Mondeo anyway. Ive heard some real goosebumps & horror stories about that car already. interior build falling apart... commonrail problems... Undiagosable ECU faults... well it is a Ford so what can someone expect?
Before I was made redundant RAC Autowindscreens bought a whole new fleet of 08 plates from Chesterfield for the line managers. They had 2.2TDCi Titanium X Mondeos as an alternative to the Toyota Avensis D-4D & they are that crap beleive me! They are YM-YT registrations like the Ford Vans I used to drive. And My manager often sent me out to get faulty ones driven back to Ford to be fixed as I was the company driver! They didn't half make some weird noises.
1ns4ne1d10t. I am genuinely extremely sorry about what happened to you. These are terrible time to put it mildly.
I actually drive an amazing Seat Toledo TdiSE. I bought it new at the end of 1999. Best car i ever had. It has now done almost 172,000 miles and goes incredibly. So reliable and comfortable.
thats ok man, thanks though, Ive got an interview for a similar job to my last job coming up at salon supplies as a van driver so there is a small thumbs up! I myself have got the Seat Leon FR TDi 150 at the moment & Im curious about your Toledo is it a 110 or 130SE?
Yes it is a 1.9 110 bhp. I drove it this summer with five adults and incredibly heavy full boot from Holyhead (I came on the large Stena Ferry) up to Northumberland, then down to Harwich and again back via Holyhead. Car went so smoothly and economically. Plenty of pulling power when full.
My sister also has a Seat, the 1.9 Ibiza TDi with 157,000 miles on her clock & it pulls very strongly with 4 in it. Ive driven it a few times myself & apart from sounding a bit more like a loud van & being more diesel smokey compared to my Leon which is the later Pumpe Duse injection version, It still amazingly takes your face off with plenty of pull! it satisfies me, but I wouldn't step back down to multipoint though
I considered a Toledo SE TDi but as I was 23 I opted for the slightly quicker, sportier hatch-back version of it, hence why I got the Leon FR instead. But as Im getting older I fancy something more saloon looking with a smoother ride but still goes very well, my Leon is feeling too harsh for my liking now.
The main gasget went in 2007; probably as a result of the local NCT tests they do in Dublin (harder than the MOT). They rev diesels at the maximum. It is painful to hear!!!!!
ouch! Personally I think that is a stupid test, revving the guts from them. There is a red-line & the actual power In BHp which is at 4,000 RPM & should not exceed to the red-band. The maximum torque for Diesel is 1,500-3,500 with peak torque @ 2,000-3,500. No wonder it went! I would sue those grease monkeys who did the damage, do they know anything?
Move to England, if you want your Toledo to live a longer, happier life. NCT is a pile of crap, if they knew anything about cars, They would know better than to mindlessly abuse an engine like that. Cars have governed revs & a red-line for a reason, Red always means Don't do or Danger & they should know this, its not rocket science! No Personal offence to you & I hope you aren't offended by this but, I despise Ireland sometimes for its Numpty-ish & down-right idiotic rules & regulations.
When I lived and worked in England I heard they were forced to stop over reving diesels in the MOT. They said it shortened engine life. Over in Dublin they don't kill the petrol engines in the same way.
they are revving it because of "smoke emission testing" but its only ever been linked to slight over-fuelling in the air/fuel mixture & its not actually Toxic emissions. I think they probably use this as a good excuse to keep the car population down. It does stress & kill the engine life which is a fact. & thats why we stopped doing it.
Most other Citroens handle good all except the Xsara Picasso Mk1 because the full-lock is like a battleship & they roll around bends like a fully loaded double decker bus, totally different to a Megane Scenic Mk1 which handles the complete opposite to a Picasso! they all have very sharp responsive finger light steering but its like honey I shrunk the foot pedals?
I have driven many of the newer Megane Scenics and Grand Scenics. They are very comfortable but of course not the best on corners. The Opel Zaffira I hired had amazing cornering and excellent performance; but the suspension was hellishly hard.
Citroen C5 won "The Semprit Car of the Year 2009" in Ireland against very strong opposition and it came second to a small Toyota in the 2009 Japanese Car of the Year.
This really is one of the nicest cars on the road. As well as looking so beautiful, it is very well and solidly made. It shares engines with the Ford Mondeo and Peugeot. Someone I know has had this for well over a year and done a lot of travelling towing a caravan. He has had 100% reliability and loves the comfort etc.
I own one myself. Standard Suspension (not a Hydractive model) and a 1.8 petrol engine. I own it for 12 months now (got it the day it came out in Ireland).
13000km is all I have managed so far but it's been flawless reliability wise, extremely comfortable, and the interior has not deteriorated even in the most minor of ways from day to day use.
Overall build quality has been flawless, it's quiet, smooth on the road, comfortable, nice to drive, economical, reliable, and it looks fantastic.
CitroenC407. It is very interesting to read about your own personal experience with this car over a period of time. I spoke with a Dublin Taxi driver, he is very impressed with the new Citroens. Always interesting to talk with Taxi drivers.
I know some of the older Citroen models were known for some reliability problems and build quality problems...
But what so many people don't seem to get these days is that Citroen have really upped their game in recent years. There isn't one bad Citroen in the range nowadays, either in terms of looks or build quality. If people would get their brand-snobbery out of their systems and give them a chance, they would all be very surprised at how good the cars really are these days.
It won the irish semprit Car of the Year 2009 against big opposition. Citroen also won some other top prizes with other models in the same competition. This C5 shares engines with Ford, Peugeot and Jaguar.
yeah but from what i hear it's not much of a seller in the uk. lol from what i hear, all you want is a german badge you don't care what car it is as long as it has a bmw or merc badge!
there are plenty of people like that here too, but i think more people here will appreciate the hydro nematic suspension. out in the southwestern united states, the roads are straight as a ruler with a lot of potholes in them, so this car would be very successful there especially.
It's interesting that it shares engines with Ford, peugeot and Jaguar.Ford recently sold Jaguar to the Indian Tata company. Cars are actually surprisingly international nowadays. The main designer is Croatian with years of experience at Audi.
The Mercedes E Class and 5 series BMW are both fabulous cars if you want to pay for them. I personally think certain rivals of the Citroen C5 are far over hyped. The Citroen c5 is under hyped in the British and Irish press.A taxi driver told me yesterday they had reliability troubles with several new Ford Mondeos. He thought the C5 a nice car.
A friend of my father-in-law in the UK has had one of these new C5s for about a year.He often pulls caravans in France,Spain and of course UK. He loves the car and has never had a day's trouble with it. Total reliability.
The problem is that to reach american certification requirement, an european car as a lot of changes to do. To make the changes and get the certification it cost a lot of money, don't know how much but without being certain to sell it or without having enough money to assure eventual loss it's not very intelligent to sell a car in the US. The day US and European Standard will reach each other (or the day european will not have to degrade their car to sell it on the US) it will be possible.
What I've heard is the suspenion is not allowed by US standards. Mercedes bought the Citroen suspension for their high class cars, but then they couldn't sell them in the US. With the US concrete highways (i had a Toyota Camry in Texas) Citroen would be perfect. For comfort, I have no doubts that the Americans would love it!
Please let me know if I am wrong. I used to hear that Mercedes Benz used "air" suspension in their E Class and S Class. I think the C5 has three different suspensions on offer.
The C5 has two settings of it's special soft suspension (a button which switches it to "sport" for bends) and there is a more simple steel spring one on cheaper versions.
mhm, i hear that renault might come back. they're gonna buy saturn from gm solely for the dealer network, scrap the brand, but use the dealers for renaults.
sucks because from what i hear renault is very poor quality, citroen is the only good french brand.
nope :D renault mesed up in 2000 cause they tryed to save some money and loosen up qualiti :D but nowdays laguna is awesome :)) really watch some laguna videos and u will se :)
i still wouldn't buy the laguna. idt renault has any good cars that makes me interested anyway. citroen on the other hand has the c5, berlingo multispace, c-crosser (even though it's just a mitsubishi, it still looks cool lol) and the c4. they all look great, and they're very much tuned for comfort, something americans (especially people in the southwest and midwest, where the roads are perfectly straight) will love.
yea i know all that :P but 1 thing, C4 is rubish,i personly love Citroens i had Bx Gti then XM and they were way better than mercs and bmw :P i loved them :D but all Citroens with out hyrdaulics are stupid :) to me xD
i stay with Laguna..umm 407 isnt bad too,but Laguna Sport charmed me :) it is so sexy xD watch some vide u will see,and it has really good build qualiti :D
lol sorry but i disagree, i'm a big fan of mazdas and bmws. i own a mazda 6 now, and hope to get a 335i as my next car, unless alfa romeo ever brings over the 159 XD
eheh but i really like French cars cause they are cheaper and sometimes give even more then german cars xD i like alfa,it has nice shape xD but evry1 drives bmw,and mercs :P and my dream car is Peugeot 405 T16 xD that is hell machine :) maybe u heard about it
Citroens are built together with Peugeots now. I heard an interview with a top Peugeot man. They really mean business with taking on the well known German makes. I am certainly impressed with what I have heard.
nope, i live in america, they are not for sale here. but from reviews i've heard/read/watched, peugeots are like kias, for people who just want a car, in the same way that i'll go to costco when i just want a microwave.
citroens are good, however, for people who put comfort over performance.
coolerdude44. I have had experience with certain Citroens and Peugeots. My brother owned a very fast small Peugeot for years and drove it very hard for work. It was an incredibly good car.
No, thats not the case, Peugeot & Citroen are of the same motor company. They share the like wise engines/platforms with each other. Its like Ford/Lincoln/Mercury. Only that Its known as the Peugeot/Citroen/Renault group. In my case as I hate French cars anyway its Poo-geot/Shitroen/Ren-errrrghh to me, Peugeot isn't a "costco" car like Kia/Hyundai/Daewoo, they aren't on the same level at all, Peugeot is right on par with Citroen & Renault.
Take it from me, Peugeots & Citroens both feel awkward. Peugeots feel too far apart in gear selection & the clutch biting point always feels too sudden on them. Citroens feel much smoother on the clutch bite & the gear change is closer together & its easier to change but then the foot pedal size on Citroens are far too small & too far apart. you have to drive them on tip-toes. Renault, are best, they do have rather short foot pedal levers like a van but they have the best turn circle of the lot!
The Ride of the Valkeries from the group of Operas called the Ring by Wagner. Wagner was such a genius composer. An impossible person, but incredibly gifted. I played in an opera orchestra for years. I love Wagner's operas.
I very much apologise rmatveev. I quickly though when you said "that video" you meant the main Citroen C5 advert. I didn't realise you meant this video. I must read more carefully.I really am sorry.
this car is so beautiful & so well equipped for such a low price.I know cars in UK r abit expensive but the top of the range is only 24000 pounds thats alike $34000 in the US, this would be the best affordable luxury salon in the US if they bring it here, but when they bring it here they charge 55-$60000 for some reason then they dont sell many cars n close up, i dont know why citreon get greedy in the american market. If they were reasonable they'd sell so many more cars here.

Mine is coming close to 3 years old now, bought one of these C5s on release date in Ireland, and nothing has broken, come loose, looks worn in any way, it still looks feels and drives exactly as it did the day I drove it out of the showroom. Reliability? Flawless. What a machine.
CitroenC407 1 year ago
@CitroenC407 Thoroughly agree. What's more, I'm in Ireland too and I've had 3 Xantias, all beauties reliability-wise. Way ahead of Nissans, mercs etc whose reliability has slid while Citroens has improved massively. I'm on 190k on a Hdi 90 with original clutch. Rural roads, including mountains paths when I feel like it. Tough as nuts. Before that, I had a 2.0 16v petrol and before that, a 1.9td with 180k when sold. Citroens are real cars, not just the usual matrix homogenous mind-control.
Anrirua 1 year ago

I think french cars can be an enigma well built in some areas very cheap in others like trim.......nasty plastics poor electronics and quirky mechanics
RogueBrit 1 year ago
@RogueBrit Did you sit in the C5? Nasty plastics? Man, this cars interior can put Bmw 3 to shame. The only car that feels better built in the class is Audi A4, and thats only because it costs twice as much.

This is a great car ! I love the design , shape , look and overall feel . My dad was looking at one as the new everyday car , we all loved it , but decided to get a c6 . I still love this , and highly recomend it , i prefer the dash in the c5 for quality feel . Im so glad this car has become a hit in ireland ! I see quite a few!

Me, too.

Citroen have reason to be proud.

just got back from citroen's showroom.i've jizzed just by test driving this one.honestly im trying my best not to overstate this car but he's right, citroen managed to do a quantum leap for this ride.the handling are nearly as good as a bmw,the comfort and smoothness..well it's purely magnificent.drank a can of juice without spilling it while manuevering sharp turning.if you're a fan of stability then this is the car for you.if you're a fan of speed and fast pick up then it's not.one wrd.awesome.
scottbluth 2 years ago 7

Viva la Citroën!

Good one Babadonka. Do you know at least that Nissan is partly owned by Renault ?
50% around. And the 2 world leader in Diesel engines are Germans and French. The french invented the PArticle filter. Not a detail at all.

This car is extremely strong and well built.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
so strong & well built that the underneath of them rusts away like a 14 yearold car only after 4 years like all the other Citroens do & the dials & switches always feel like they are gonna drop off any second! Just like my dads Xsara Picasso & my aunties C3! The foot pedals are so friggin awkward on them anyway, too small in size & too far apart from eachother so you drive on tip-toes & play guess the pedals with your feet while you are driving!
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
I know people who have done a big mileage in this car and absolutely love it and have had no trouble at all. It is actually very heavily built with good materials. It is not a Citroen of old. I know there was trouble with the old Picassos.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
Its probably much better than the new 2008 Mondeo anyway. Ive heard some real goosebumps & horror stories about that car already. interior build falling apart... commonrail problems... Undiagosable ECU faults... well it is a Ford so what can someone expect?
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
Yes it was a Taxi driver who told me about the new mondeo problems. They have a number of them in their fleet.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
Before I was made redundant RAC Autowindscreens bought a whole new fleet of 08 plates from Chesterfield for the line managers. They had 2.2TDCi Titanium X Mondeos as an alternative to the Toyota Avensis D-4D & they are that crap beleive me! They are YM-YT registrations like the Ford Vans I used to drive. And My manager often sent me out to get faulty ones driven back to Ford to be fixed as I was the company driver! They didn't half make some weird noises.
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
1ns4ne1d10t. I am genuinely extremely sorry about what happened to you. These are terrible time to put it mildly.
I actually drive an amazing Seat Toledo TdiSE. I bought it new at the end of 1999. Best car i ever had. It has now done almost 172,000 miles and goes incredibly. So reliable and comfortable.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
thats ok man, thanks though, Ive got an interview for a similar job to my last job coming up at salon supplies as a van driver so there is a small thumbs up! I myself have got the Seat Leon FR TDi 150 at the moment & Im curious about your Toledo is it a 110 or 130SE?
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
Yes it is a 1.9 110 bhp. I drove it this summer with five adults and incredibly heavy full boot from Holyhead (I came on the large Stena Ferry) up to Northumberland, then down to Harwich and again back via Holyhead. Car went so smoothly and economically. Plenty of pulling power when full.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
My sister also has a Seat, the 1.9 Ibiza TDi with 157,000 miles on her clock & it pulls very strongly with 4 in it. Ive driven it a few times myself & apart from sounding a bit more like a loud van & being more diesel smokey compared to my Leon which is the later Pumpe Duse injection version, It still amazingly takes your face off with plenty of pull! it satisfies me, but I wouldn't step back down to multipoint though
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
I considered a Toledo SE TDi but as I was 23 I opted for the slightly quicker, sportier hatch-back version of it, hence why I got the Leon FR instead. But as Im getting older I fancy something more saloon looking with a smoother ride but still goes very well, my Leon is feeling too harsh for my liking now.
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
The main gasget went in 2007; probably as a result of the local NCT tests they do in Dublin (harder than the MOT). They rev diesels at the maximum. It is painful to hear!!!!!
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
Move to England, if you want your Toledo to live a longer, happier life. NCT is a pile of crap, if they knew anything about cars, They would know better than to mindlessly abuse an engine like that. Cars have governed revs & a red-line for a reason, Red always means Don't do or Danger & they should know this, its not rocket science! No Personal offence to you & I hope you aren't offended by this but, I despise Ireland sometimes for its Numpty-ish & down-right idiotic rules & regulations.
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
Luckily the test is only every two years unlike your MOTs. I get absolutely fed up with these stupid rules and regulations.
I also lived for 10 years in Sidmouth.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
If you had a Rover K-series in Dublin it wouldn't last an NCT test! That would definately blow its head gasket during the test. Sounds awful.
1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
When I lived and worked in England I heard they were forced to stop over reving diesels in the MOT. They said it shortened engine life. Over in Dublin they don't kill the petrol engines in the same way.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
they are revving it because of "smoke emission testing" but its only ever been linked to slight over-fuelling in the air/fuel mixture & its not actually Toxic emissions.

1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
I have driven many of the newer Megane Scenics and Grand Scenics. They are very comfortable but of course not the best on corners. The Opel Zaffira I hired had amazing cornering and excellent performance; but the suspension was hellishly hard.

This really is one of the nicest cars on the road. As well as looking so beautiful, it is very well and solidly made. It shares engines with the Ford Mondeo and Peugeot. Someone I know has had this for well over a year and done a lot of travelling towing a caravan. He has had 100% reliability and loves the comfort etc.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago 4

Always interesting to talk with Taxi drivers.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
I know some of the older Citroen models were known for some reliability problems and build quality problems...
But what so many people don't seem to get these days is that Citroen have really upped their game in recent years. There isn't one bad Citroen in the range nowadays, either in terms of looks or build quality. If people would get their brand-snobbery out of their systems and give them a chance, they would all be very surprised at how good the cars really are these days.

coolerdude44 2 years ago 5
It won the irish semprit Car of the Year 2009 against big opposition. Citroen also won some other top prizes with other models in the same competition. This C5 shares engines with Ford, Peugeot and Jaguar.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
yeah but from what i hear it's not much of a seller in the uk. lol from what i hear, all you want is a german badge you don't care what car it is as long as it has a bmw or merc badge!
there are plenty of people like that here too, but i think more people here will appreciate the hydro nematic suspension. out in the southwestern united states, the roads are straight as a ruler with a lot of potholes in them, so this car would be very successful there especially.
coolerdude44 2 years ago
It's interesting that it shares engines with Ford, peugeot and Jaguar.Ford recently sold Jaguar to the Indian Tata company. Cars are actually surprisingly international nowadays. The main designer is Croatian with years of experience at Audi.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
The Mercedes E Class and 5 series BMW are both fabulous cars if you want to pay for them. I personally think certain rivals of the Citroen C5 are far over hyped. The Citroen c5 is under hyped in the British and Irish press.A taxi driver told me yesterday they had reliability troubles with several new Ford Mondeos. He thought the C5 a nice car.

cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
The problem is that to reach american certification requirement, an european car as a lot of changes to do. To make the changes and get the certification it cost a lot of money, don't know how much but without being certain to sell it or without having enough money to assure eventual loss it's not very intelligent to sell a car in the US. The day US and European Standard will reach each other (or the day european will not have to degrade their car to sell it on the US) it will be possible.
chenoir 2 years ago
What I've heard is the suspenion is not allowed by US standards. Mercedes bought the Citroen suspension for their high class cars, but then they couldn't sell them in the US. With the US concrete highways (i had a Toyota Camry in Texas) Citroen would be perfect. For comfort, I have no doubts that the Americans would love it!
Kulumuli 2 years ago
Please let me know if I am wrong. I used to hear that Mercedes Benz used "air" suspension in their E Class and S Class. I think the C5 has three different suspensions on offer.
cattleman6420012000 2 years ago
The C5 has two settings of it's special soft suspension (a button which switches it to "sport" for bends) and there is a more simple steel spring one on cheaper versions.

1ns4ne1d10t 2 years ago
Take it from me, Peugeots & Citroens both feel awkward. Peugeots feel too far apart in gear selection & the clutch biting point always feels too sudden on them. Citroens feel much smoother on the clutch bite & the gear change is closer together & its easier to change but then the foot pedal size on Citroens are far too small & too far apart. you have to drive them on tip-toes. Renault, are best, they do have rather short foot pedal levers like a van but they have the best turn circle of the lot!
