I have read The Fog, The Ghosts of Sleath and I am reading the Secret of Crickley Hall. Can anyone recommend another of his books for me to start when I have finished this one...?
Was this ever on tv? Anyway regardless of that I do love his writing, I'm reading Once for the first time (despite having owned it for about 8 years, I've read a good few of his others but this one got put on the backburner for some reason) and really enjoying it, it's obviously a little different to the 'horror' novels but still truly excellent, still so graphic and evocative.
Yep, I got through it really quickly, really absorbing book, as I say different from normal but still great characters, I loved it! Let me know how you get on.
yup, i finished it, i gotta say, i really found it hard work, overally discriptive, slow and explicit for the sake of it, i liked the little elf guy, he was cool, but it just got tiering with the hole "is it real, is it not" thing and then jennet keept on talking to him like he was an idiot and he kept acting like one! agghhhh! and i really really wanted to like it, maybe too much? the pace of the book i found was like the magic cottage, never mind, next stop colour of magic, terry pratchett!
Ah that's a shame, though to be honest, I appreciate the descriptiveness as I like to write myself and always find that's pretty tough and it is something James does well. As for whether it was real or not, I think the aim was to show how any normal person would be thinking if they were in the same situation - it'd take a long time for it to sink in! The only bit that disappointed me a little as the end but the rest was good for my reading requirements! Enjoy Mr Pratchett!
i think maybe this book might have been one for the ladys, it was good to see the return of Rumbo though! have you read Fluke? thats one of my fav' herbert novels, i do agree with you though, if i started seeing fearys i would probably wonder about the mushrooms i'd brought at tescos!
I am a huge fan.the rats was only one of a trilogy.LAIR and DOMAIN (which in my opinion is his best)make up the rest.i have yet to read a book by him that i dont like.try MOON or THE MAGIC COTTAGE.pure genius
I prefer 'The Fog' for its sheer weirdness. But I do rate 'Rats' as an important work of Horror. It definately set the template for Shaun Hutsons early work (particularly 'Slugs').
yeah it's ok but have you read crickley hall "shudders" sweet jesus i can't switch my light off at night it's that scary!! and his voice is scary! lol

Has anyone read "Others"? I think that's probably my favourite book of Herberts so far, but It's a really close one, I love most of them a lot ^^

Others is brilliant, probably my second favourite after Once.

Was his 'Others' novel made into a film with Nicole Kidman?

I'm getting my Herbert novels mixed up.
When I said Crickley Hall I meant Haunted.
Just ignore my other comment. xD

That's not how I imagined how his voice would sound. It's cool if it is actually him though.
