The report cited the Shonan Maru's failure to yield to the Ady Gil who had the right of way, failure to maintain a safe speed and separation distance while in close proximity to another vessel, failure to signal impending collision, & crippling the AG crew with water cannons and the LRAD. I hope the jap's vessel insurance is paid up!!!

The video is very clear - the japanese ship was full speed ahead and in the last second made a hard right towards the Ady Gil. Watch the bow of the japanese ship dipping down so hard as it hits the waves causing giant splash of water which indicated that the ship was at full speed. Then the ship was listing or leaning hard on the left or port side as it made a hard turn towards Ady Gil....

Imagine an African country called Buwanda. They actively hunt elephant for their ivory. Then the world gets together to ban ivory sales because of dwindling elephant populations. A few months later, the Buwandan govt consolidates all the assets of their former ivory hunting businesses into a new "Center for Ivory Research ," and they continue to kill 1,000+ elephants a year for "research" and then sell the ivory to pay for the "research." Would not the world see through this and condemn it??

I also believe the 1986 moratorium against commercial whaling limit for whaling for research is way to high. It's like 50 some whales of certain species.

The courage it takes for these volunteers to put their lives at risk for something they believe in is remarkable. They know what's at stake and continue to challenge the Japanese ships because they know in their hearts they're doing the right thing. Amazing people doing amazing things!

From 1:27 it appears the whaling boat did swing to starboard and into the Ady Gil... a deliberate ramming... and the Ady Gil does appear stopped so would not have been able to manoeuver to take evasive action. Also the camera does not have been "under way" so any change in the camera angle appears unlikely.

I'll tell you why the Japanese public seem to have no problem with this. Whaling was an integral part of the country's history; that explains why there's no outrage, it's ingrained into their culture (although it's nearly obsolete now). Another reason is that the radical actions of Sea Shepherd (lying about getting shot at, throwing bombs into ships) have essentially alienated the japanese public, killing hopes of any attempt to sit down and reason with them.

The video is very clear - the japanese ship was full speed ahead and in the last second made a hard right towards the Ady Gil. Watch the bow of the japanese ship dipping down so hard as it hits the waves causing giant splash of water which indicated that the ship was at full speed. Then the ship was listing or leaning hard on the left or port side as it made a hard turn towards Ady Gil....

If you watch the begin of the TV show of this season the same ship was trying to attack the Sea Shepherds helicopter while it was in the air. The thing that doesn't make sense at all to me is why the japanese claim they need hundreds of whales to research one species. You'd think a couple would do the trick. I also believe the 1986 moratorium against commercial whaling limit for whaling for research is way to high. It's like 50 some whales of certain species.

@aacdo They don't need any whales, actually. A recent scientific study was conducted in which scientists shot a dart that is not felt by whales, and harms them in now way, to collect tissue samples. The Japanese lie about scientific research. More whale meat goes to sushi markets in Japan than to labratories.

To start with im completely against whaling, but if you look at the stern of the ADY GIL it is clearly under propulsion and had a legal responsibility even if it has right of way (which it does) to avoid a collision.
Also many of you are stipulating that the Japanese vessel turned to starboard to deliberately ram the Ady Gil- the Japanese vessel turned to starboard as this is the marine navigation standard to avoid a collision when giving right to astarboard crossing vessel

From 1:27 it appears the whaling boat did swing to starboard and into the Ady Gil... a deliberate ramming... and the Ady Gil does appear stopped so would not have been able to manoeuver to take evasive action. Also the camera does not have been "under way" so any change in the camera angle appears unlikely.

Don't they know it's illegal and they continue to hunt. They hunt sharks illegally as well and they continue to do so with no disregard at all to what potentially could happen. Don't the japenese know what they are doing?

dam its Australian Waters as far as im concerned any boat fishing in our waters should be escorted out of Australian waters or sunk by the navy , Australian navy sinks about 10 fishing boats a year why should this be any different

Why do they choose to hunt even though they know they are in the wrong. They know whales are close to extinction but thy continue to hunt.
Same thing goes with they shark and the finning idustry. If both spiecrs go extinct it could unbalance the whole water ecosystem which could kill off everything.

I'll tell you why the Japanese public seem to have no problem with this. Whaling was an integral part of the country's history; that explains why there's no outrage, it's ingrained into their culture (although it's nearly obsolete now). Another reason is that the radical actions of Sea Shepherd (lying about getting shot at, throwing bombs into ships) have essentially alienated the japanese public, killing hopes of any attempt to sit down and reason with them.

Sure a lot of them do not even know about what is going on, but some do. These people can help out and educate others in their country about what is really going on with the whale & dolphin hunting.
