I was thinking, can you do a review of "The Big Goodbye" from Season 1 of TNG? I know you say that TNG is season 1 is really bad, and I wanted to see what you thought about, whether you actually like it and is one of the exceptions to the bad episodes of Season 1, or if you don't like it despite all the awards it's gotten.
Oh wow, how weird. I stumbled upon "The Man from Earth" Just least night (thanks netflix instant!) and found it quite enjoyable. Looking forward to what you thought of it!
Your statement "technically you shouldn't end a sentence with a preposition" is actually incorrect. Contrary to what a lot of people think, that's not a rule of English grammar. The Chicago Manual of Style, if I remember correctly, goes so far as to call it a superstition.
@lseths Well from what I was taught, there are essentially two schools of thought on grammar, one being that grammar is as people use it, while the other is that there should be rules for how grammar should be. For instance, whether or not you can split an infinitive legitimately is largely based on the fact that you can't split one in Latin, ergo you shouldn't do so in English. So it's possible that what I was taught in college is no longer applicable today (because I am so fucking old)
I can normally take or leave Barclay, but I really like this one and it's for a reason you ripped on: the first scene with Troi, after he runs out of the transporter room. She was actually doing her job quite well there. A good therapist will say "You have good reasons for feeling the way you do, but that doesn't meant you can't overcome them." By contrast, someone who says their patients' feelings are invalid and should just be ignored would never make it through the certification process.
@aperson22222 But I'm sure it's more like, "Yes, something can happen, but..." rather than, "Of course you're afraid of flying: suspended miles above the Earth in a metal box maintained by corrupt unions and funded by corner-cutting business fatcats flown by guys who drink like it's spring break in Key West... My point is, these things go down! THESE THINGS GO DOWN!!!!!"
@sfdebris In my experiencethey wait for you to admit that your feelings need to be changed/overcome--which Reg has done--and then try to smooth the way before you. They don't push you to changing your behavior more quickly than you're comfortable, though maybe since Reg and Troi are both Starfleet and Reg's phobia is interfering with his duty the rules would be different. But to me she really didn't seem too alarming. She was just letting him know she understood where he was coming from.
And it was nice to see that people with psychological issues were being given the opportunity to participate fully in Federation society.
Of course, when she later chased him through the halls saying "Hey! Why aren't you coming to therapy?" and mentioning details of what they'd discussed, then publicly humuliating him by relieving him of duty in front of everyone and explaining why, the professionalism took a bit of a nosedive. For a civilian, even mentioning that he was under her care where
people could overhear her would be a serious breach of confidentiality, though again, the rules may be a little different since they're both Starfleet officers.
@sfdebris You're both right. It is a real thing, but she did it poorly. Of course, in TV they often summarize stuff like this; you wouldn't want to see a whole one-hour therapy session. Still, it did come across as silly when it wasn't meant to and I suppose that's the ultimate litmus test of the presentation.
@mitmfan Oh, that's right, they did. My mistake. I remembered reading that it was the only time in the Star Trek Encyclopedia, but that was an edition published before "Prototype" aired.
@therealGLAD If speaking the truth makes me a blasphemer, then it's a title I'm proud to wear. Voyager killed Star Trek, but it was Enterprise that sodomized its corpse.
@therealGLAD He didn't even mention it this week--and I would have liked to know what Archer does late at night.
He's gotten less critical of it lately. In the intro to the ST XI review, for instance, he said it was unfortunate that the show got cancelled right as it seemed to be hitting its stride. At other times he's said Seasons 3 and 4 were big improvements, but that it had already cemented a bad reputation and lost the fans.
I'd sure love to know how you can do a review of "Ship In A Bottle" without doing one on "Elementary Dear Data" first.

Man from Earth rocks! It's nice seeing what's his name as something other than "Dr. Neelix."

I wonder what would be Archer's response to being called in the middle of the night

@SebastianFNemo
Archer doesn't sleep. He's afraid the Vulcans will steal his memories in the night.

My opinion on this episode:
Good idea. Terrible execution.
