I was here in the late 80's as part of ATC. Was an excellent facility. Fired my first SA80 there on the Range. And the gym area of the converted hangar was brilliant. Played tons of badminton there. Also got a ride in a SH-3.
Thing I remember it most for was that the first girl I fell in love with was there
as well... pity she didn't pay me much attention lol!
Excellent...except for one thing...the Royal Air Force doesn't have ANY camps or bases...it has STATIONS. They're not called anything else, other than STATION. First thing I learned in "history" classes at Swinderby back in 1988. Used to crack me up hearing "Yeah, but I call it 'camp'" Call it whatever the hell you want, but it's correctly called a Station. Here endeth the lesson. Carry on...
This was my last posting back in 1998 ( Raf Cranwell Detatchment Newton). even then half the base was derelict and had been left to rot.
No wonder this fucking Labour Government have no money leaving property like this to decay and fall apart, and the fucking MOD are every bit as bad. Britain is fucked!!!
Thanks for posting this video. As a CCF Cadet from Nottingham I used to fly from Newton with 7 AEF most Wednesdays and then much later with JEFTS when in the Army Air Corps. It saddens me beyond words to see Newton in such a state, I so wish it was still operational, I have so many fond memories of the place. Tell me, is there any security in place there now and if so, how would I go about getting clearance to wander around, for old times sake?
i lived here . my dad was dog section manager along with other dog /police jobs over 3 tours from early 80's to early 90's my mother cleaned and polished most of the camp , and my now wife worked in the officers mess, i served in the a.t.c here this place holds most of the memories of my childhood. lots of friends made and lost
Did n my RAFP training and further training here back in the 80's and 90's. Excellent place and it really is sad to see it like this. Happy days!
