There is no edge to his act apparent here in this video. It seems he had not yet evolved into the obnoxious in your face diceman we all know, but rather quite tame and sounds more nervous than in his later acts.

Kaufman used to do things to push the audience and see what he could get away with...like reading poetry on stage for an entire show.

It took balls and was about more than jokesor humour...it was comedy, there is a difference as Dice said in more than one of his shows.
