  • very nice

  • he's an inspiration and a true artist. i could listen to him talk all day

  • love doyle sobber :)

  • The way in which he approaches the relationship between cinematographer and actress strongly influences the way in which I, as a photographer, approach my subjects. Truly an inspiring figure.

  • you have to work very hard to find the film. How true!!

  • "I guess I am very lonely..."

Yes indeed, but Chris must have the richest experience in the world !!

  • He has such a weird accent. He sounds French but he's Australian.

  • @extrekkie13

He sounds weird accent and French because years of making art films he've converted to speaking French as his primary language (over English), also years of staying in Asia he speaks fluent Mandarin. The two intervenes into his native tongue. He's a true universal artist.

  • @bigfatdick5000 He speaks Cantonese Chinese - because he lives in Hong Kong. But this doesn't mean he speaks Mandarin Chinese also...

  • @Bouncybon No, Chris speaks better Mandarin than cantonese.

  • @Bouncybon he lived in taiwan too so he must have at least a grasp of mandarin and taiwanese as well :)))

  • @cantfindwords Oh. OK.

  • The most enlightening and inspiring talk about film making ever.

  • I wanna be like him

    But my common sense says...no

    fuck my common sense!!!!!!!

  • I met him at BAFF (Barcelona Asian Film Festival) in 2006, where he gave a Masterclass. He is a great person, very warm, smart, and truly one of today's top cinematographers. And he never attended film school!!

  • amazing, the girl in the red dress in the background steps right into the frame at the same time that Diyle says COLOR

  • @Lucilup

    COLOUR

  • "i grew up with white people!"

    lol wise words!

more white people should be like him, then there might be less racism/cultural ignorance!

  • @Mach88888 im asian, born in sydney, now living in hong kong

azns are some of the most racist people you will find

  • @lagook so are white people

i'm chinese american born and raised in America

i experienced racism and discrimination all my childhood here and im only 27yrs

  • @theyellowfist which part of America you from? i heard parts of it are super racist

azns general dont think that saying that they dont like black people isnt a racist comment

  • @lagook

I am asian american currently living in sydney.

asians in asia are racist because the system's homogenous and they've not had the chance to interact with/exposed to the more heterogenous western society like we do, but if asians in australia are racist it's a reactionary response to the mainstream *white* society, they have the right to be racist. and I am speaking from my observation.

  • @bigfatdick5000 no one had the 'right' to be racist.

  • Chris is my favorite cinematographer. He is brilliant. Hopefully one day my cinematographey will be as good.

  • thanks for posting this, he really inspires people. Especially for people raised in different places, he symbolizes that sense of self assigned identity, crossing between countries and borders.

  • I agree entirely with this. Doyle is someone who everyone should look up to, even if you aren't an aspiring cinematographer or anyone involved within film.

  • Thanks very much for posting. :D

What he says is very inspiring to me as an artist who has won so many awards.

  • Any aspiring filmmaker should watch this, as this is arguably the best cinematographer on earth... and Last Life in the Universe is among the most beautiful films in recent times.

  • He's an absolute genius, and one of the best cinematographers on earth. A fusion of east and west, brilliant at capturing emotion, life, people, culture, life, energy, and the meaning of art. A master.

  • I think he's beyond east or west or any sort of restrictive frames of cultural reference. Where he was born and where he works now do not define him, he's a human being truly living beyond cultural and national bounds, being able to see and appreciate many different parts of the world (fishing in Norway for three years, growing up in Taiwan, etc.) and using that to fuel his art. Which is great to say the least.

  • I agree completely. I think that he's absorbed so much from his varied cultural backgrounds that he's lived in, and from that he's learned about life and the human condition and what all of these people share. He sees the world as artists do, and he manages to express that through his work in some of the most beautiful and truly unique terms I've ever seen. A master.

  • Very interesting -- thanks for posting.
