This is mainly for clearing of o linemans hands for d.e.'s and dts not specifically for oline but will help with awkward to punch dline. ( example: "short") notice lower hand placement on the last punch drill
This is by far the BEST basic quickness drills on youtube.
I'm not sure about football, but for wrestling(freestyle and catch) this is what we do almost everyday, except we use imaginary lines and longer range.
A more advanced method would be to add footworks to these drills, it's a bitch for the first couple of days, but I promise you after 3 weeks it prepares you on a whole new level as far as mentality is concerned.
Thanks for postin this. I'm gonna start workin the single, icky and lateral punches to my daily ladder routines to get ready for football season. 42 days!
@BulldogTennis Catered to offensive linemen, yet only one of them could be an olinemen. These dont do anything to train olinemen. All this is a shoulder stabilizing exercise. Its not sport specific, hell, it isnt even positional specific. You want SSC for olinemen, get a sled, get a power ball, get cones, and use the agility ladder as it was ment to be used, for quick feet. This is a should stabilizing excerise that is all.
@elti54 and if anyone thinks it is SSC to football or PSC to O linemen, i pray to god you dont coach football, moreso i pray to god you dont coach O line.
Try working in some "hop scotch" patterns or maybe "in-in-out-out" work. I hope these players have some sort of shoulder dynamic/pre-had program because there is a lot of shoulder stress on untrained athletes when coaches put them into these things. Good luck!
What is your education level and experience as it regards training/rehabing athletes? One of the problems that we have here in cyber space is that any one can comment on any thing with out any fear of repercutions. I doubt that you would stand in front of the man that is trying to create drills for his athletes and tell him that to his face using those exact words. Constructive critisism is one thing, this is another.
Maybe this will help you: According to Hannaford in "Smart moves: why learning is not all in your head" (1995) "crawling, a cross - lateral movement, activates development of the copus callosum (the nerve pathways between the two hemispheres of the cerebrum). The development of theres pathways causes both sides of the body to work together to move the limbs, eyes, and ears......both sides of the body can move in a more inegrated way for more efficient action.
another way to make these effective is to coach your athletes to perform them with unlocked arms, meaning elbows at a noticeable angle. this will train the tricep for quickness in a more powerful position.
Excellent drills, coach. Thanks for sharing them. The moronic ingrates who don't think that this would be useful for football linemen have never PLAYED the position, nor have they COACHED the position. I've done both and I can tell you that this is very innovative, high yield movement.
I think this video is great. I'm an offensive line coach in Nebraska. We do a lot of work on all fours and it pays dividends. I think what many are failing to realize, is along with promoting quick hands and core strength, your forcing the players to have QUICK FEET/LEG DRIVE. For athletes, all their power is in their hips and legs. Great video and thank you for posting it. I will be using parts of it. Craig
Thanks! You're pretty much the expert. Your way is the only way. You know it all. You have a great resume and all the answers. I also love the evidence (videos) of your work on your youtube page that prove everything that i have just stated. I would love to have the research to prove what you're saying is true. In addition I have played and coached at a high level an I still do. I work with a number of pro athletes that I'm sure a spectator like you seeks autographs from. You're all talk buddy!
This is by far the stupidest drill I have ever seen...bar none. And judging by some of the responses posted as to why it is a good drill it further proves how persons uneducated in sports science have too much time on their hands. Hand speed? Shoulder stability? Core strength? This is a sure way for athletes who haven't already developed these areas properly to tear a rotator. The only unfortunate sign here is how kids pursuing their dreams will follow grown men who never realized their own.
hanks! You're pretty much the expert. Your way is the only way. You know it all. You have a great resume and all the answers. I also love the evidence (videos) of your work on your youtube page that prove everything that i have just stated. I would love to have the research to prove what you're saying is true. hahahahh....buddy if you know who I train and how much more schooling I have then you....wow...bold statements from idiots...this probably why your school sucks in any sport.
The only problem with this drill is the hand placment....i have drill similar to this. you cant push anyone with palms up. good drill but bad habits...change up hand position and you will see strength and hand power coach...good luck.
When are you ever in the position of having your head down and you're moving forward with your hands on the ground in a field or during a sport? So these should produce no carryover what so ever.
When are you ever on your back pressing a bar off your chest? Never..Right? The purpose of this drill is to develop shoulder stability and core strength. It also helps with hand speed and force production for athletes using their hands. Have you ever done bear crawls or wheel barrel walks? Probably not...but if your go to Odessa Permian High School (MOJO/ Friday Night Lights) they do a ton of exercise on all fours to train their athletes during the off-season.
You're right so bench press is another overrated exercise which you can do without. So what if a school does something, maybe they have the best football players. Should USC's strength coach be praised becuase of what they do in the off season. No he has the best football players to work with year in and year out. Those drills above are useless. You can develop core strength and hand speed much better than that. This country has the worst training systems ever.
Good football players and athletes don't just spring out of the ground. It takes years of training. Why do you think all teams spend so much money on training facilities?
Look at the Chelsea (I think it's Chelsea, i know it's a big time soccer team), they have a sports facility pin pointing everything and ahtlete needs to impove on to become complete, and they turn out huge guys now. Tell me then, how are you supposed to train? You cant just keep playing the actual game, i already know that doesnt work from experience, you ahve to break down things and drill them, and isolate mucles and build them up. This forces you hands to go faster, making them quicker.
b a good drill for general conditioning and motor unit development if you have totally run out of all basic drills and your team is about to die of bordem...but has little to no sport specificity. A good hip hop dance class would be better.
these are great drills... its not about hitting the ground... its about moving while lowering your center of gravity... its also about hand work... linemen in high school don't understand that your hands are your greatest weapon... fighting to get your hands inside of a defender is how its done... the faster you are, the better your chances are to win each down... great job coach!

looks like there plaing patty cake with the ground, tell me when does a football player high five the ground during the game? unless he just got pancaked by a lineman while trying to use this, if u want fast hand just jerk off, after all its probably more beneficial than this junk
it helps a ton and have you ever done bear crawls? they really give your shoulders and legs a workout they are doing this and making themselves quicker with their hands. Being a lineman has everything to do with your hands.
I love it when the guy in the red shorts does the drill he does it slowly so i can see what is happening (thank you)
