  • great tutorial......... i learned a lot, thank you

  • Maravilloso.gracias por compartir esta hermosa técnica de encuadernación....

  • Wow, I can't tell you how helpful your tutorial here is! I really want to try this but am so afraid of confusing the living heck out of myself. Can you tell me if it starts to make sense as you go along, or is it only a matter of memorization of the method? Thank you!

  • @ArchieLovesMe For me, in the beginning especially, I needed to watch my teacher and go step by step, which is why I thought making a video would be helpful. There's always rewind when someone can't be there with you! Eventually after doing a few sections it becomes automatic. But like anything new there's a learning curve, so be kind & use practice papers at the start, precious paper for when you get the hang of it! mostly have fun!!

  • Precious! Good Job

  • @theponyisdeadd and @analua thanks so much! glad you enjoyed :)

  • thks for you tutorial. Very interesting.

  • I could watch your hands work all day Lol.

  • Okay so, I am completely in love with your tutorial. I have a love for cute journals and always thought about making my own but thought it'd probably be a hard task. Thanks to your video, I am now excited to see what amazing journals I will make in the near future. This is so wonderful!

  • @alondrajuarez10 I'm so glad to hear you are inspired by my videos! thanks for taking the time to let me know and have fun creating!!

  • omg i've been looking all over for a tutorial like yours! yay! thank you so much!

  • @jessikur So glad you found my tutorial, too!! you're welcome - i hope you have fun creating :)

@sheeki1979 That's great - I'm glad you were able to make a book for yourself. congratulations!!

  • this is the easy was to make a book i got a certificate for this....i know ....but its a easy way to make your own durabel book......like the paper used

  • Thanks .

  • How did you finish off the edges of the cover before you stitched it. Meaning, are the edges just glued and cut? If so, Can the edges fray after a while, even with the stitching. Because the stitching is only 1/8" away from the edge.

    Thanks!

  • @ehalp the edges are unfinished - glued & cut. If gluing is done evenly & adheres well to the edges it holds up very well. My book is 2 years old & has just a couple of what I'd call chips missing, where the brown paper kind of flaked off. I can tell I missed a couple spots with my gluing. Also, this type of kraft paper is extremely thin, & where it has chipped is actually on unsewn edges. Since this video I've done others with slightly heavier paper which have no visible wear. Hope that helps!

  • What kind of paper do use for the white sheets?

  • @yesenia0123 In this book I used a 24 lb weight recycled copier/printer paper. You can use whatever you like, depending on how you'll be using the book, but the thicker or heavier weight you choose the fewer sheets you'll want to use in each signature (folded section) because they'll get too bulky.

  • @yesenia0123 This is exactly what I have been looking for to bind some individually created signatures into one finished book. Thank you for this tutorial.

  • What string do you use?

  • @MrTravisJoe It's waxed linen. Most art supply stores carry it - if they have book binding supplies you'll find it there, or you can find it in the beading supply area at places like Michael's. Hope that helps!

  • Oh my gosh how wonderful! I agree that the measuring and fussyness that must go into making certain styles of books can be daunting and teadious...sometime enough to stop creativity dead in its tracks. Your tutorial has been very freeing and just begs for your artistic muse to come out and play with you while you make loads of variations of this little pudgy book. Thank you so much for taking the time to make the videos and share them with us!

    Hugs,

    Beth P

  • @beadnaway7 Thanks so much for your feedback Beth! What I'd really like to be able to do is sit around making stuff with everyone here in person, so I try to make my video experiences as close to that as possible! I'm glad it feels doable and freeing, because it really is!! happy creating :)

    Karin

  • Wow, what a great tutorial! You made it look easy, although it never is for me. It's a fussy process. The book is really beautiful. Thanks very much!

  • Fantastic tutorials so much appreciated. Having participated in a book class recently I now have added reminders.

Can't wait to start creating. AM from Australia

  • Hello, I just wanted to let you know that your tutorial is super informative, while still remaining free and not "exact" to measurements. It's quite a comfort for a person like me, who flies by the seat of their pants, that precise measurements and exact cutting shouldn't inhibit your art. At the University it's taught that you have to have a "concept" (ugh), and precise this and that... it somewhat burnt me out, but your video has inspired me to create.

  • @ScarletFever84 Thank you for your response to my video - that's exactly what I hoped to have happen when it was watched, so your words inspire me to want to do more!! thanks for taking time to let me know, and I hope you will always follow your creative spirit and keep creating!

  • This was so informative. I've got an idea for a journal and I would love to hand make, so your videos are very very well put together for me. Easy to follow steps. I was wondering, does this binding method work with leather covers as well? Also, what kind of paper did you use for the pages?

  • @Yaya8nfinity Hi, I'm so glad you find the videos helpful! I am sure that leather, suede, or any medium weight fabric even, would work just fine! It's a very versatile binding. I used regular copy weight (20 lb) paper in the video book - like for your printer, but I have done it with heavier weight drawing paper as well. If you use a heavier weight cover, like leather, you'll probably want to use a little heavier weight paper (65-75 lb), to support the cover. Hope that helps! Karin

  • Hi Connor, i think I can help you! the synthetic paper was used for the entire cover, in between the 2 layers of brown paper. it could be used between 2 layers of fabric, or any other paper chosen for the cover. The brown paper I was using was very flimsy, so needed extra stability, thus the tyvek was added. if using a sturdier fabric cover, you probably wouldn't need it, if you have a good weight & can glue 2 layers back to back. Hope that answers that part of your question. part 2 is next...

  • hey karin, im just wondering about where you said to use synthetic paper ... is the cover itself just synthetic paper of do you have some kind of fabric? also how do you know how wide to make hte spine section? any help appreciated,

    connor

  • @webweaver101 ok, part 2 of your question, for thickness of the spine, it depends on how many signatures you choose to put into the body of your book. Once you've folded all your pages, stack them up & press down on them lightly, measure the thickness & add that to your cover lengths. I know, not very precise, but I leave flexibility allowance, to adapt depending on how many pages you want. I did a thick book, you might only want 30 pages. does that make sense? i hope it helps! let me know, Karin

  • Great job on the book and video. I like your approach. It makes the whole bookmaking thing less intimidating. I've made many smaller books but am inspired to try this now. Thanks.

  • @villagescribe Thank you - I'm so glad you found the video and my style helpful. It really is a user friendly binding! I hope you enjoy making one for yourself :)

  • Wow!! I love you Vids!! I made a book using your guides and it came out great..i made mine alittle bigger and I drew on my cover..But it came out great!! thanks for your Videos!!!! It was very helpful!!! =)

  • @raynehaven that's fantastic to hear!! i'm so glad the videos helped inspire you, and that you put your own twist to it :) thanks for letting me know, Karin

  • wonderful thank you x

  • I am so enjoying your book binding vids...you are knocking down my stumbling blocks of worrying if I can figure that out from a book of written instructions! I have you to wach explain it to me. Thanks so much!!!

  • Beautiful video thank you so much! So much easier to understand than a diagram. I'm a tactile learner so I need to combine many tutorials before I can wrap my head around it and videos help the most. Again, thank you. :) Know I have a technique to recycle my torn jeans!

  • Love this thankyou so much..I'm a visual learner and you helped me understand this way of binding...please make more Binding vids :). Pretty please?

  • Thank you for the feed back - I'm a visual learner too, so I can truly relate. I am actually in the process of slowly editing some recent taping and hope to get a new binding/ book making series up in the next week or so :) So glad you've found this one to be helpful!!

  • Thanks for this tutorial!

  • You are very welcome!

  • It's very cool. And beautiful. Thanks.

  • Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!

  • That's great! thanks for letting me know - I hope you have fun with the process!!

  • Great tutorial!

Where did you buy the tyvek?

Would cardstock work just as well?

  • Yes, yes, I did see that. I was referring to the embellishment on the top that's a light brown.

  • oops, Sorry - I misunderstood! That is an ink dyed piece of muslin with a stamped image of a lotus on it. The stamp was one I hand carved. You can see a close up of it on my blog, which is linked from the video description info, found on the video page in the upper right hand corner.

  • This is fantastic, I can't wait to try it. What did you use there on the front cover? It almost look like leather.

  • Thank you! You can see me prepare the paper for the cover in part 2 of the tutorial - I can't remember I may have started it in part one :) It's a light weight craft paper that is scrunched up and dry brush painted. I sandwich Tyvek paper in between 2 layers of it for stability and strength.
