I don't remember this series AT ALL. If I had known of it, I doubt I would have watched it, though, because let's face it, Ruby-Spears makes Filmation look good. Now, maybe THIS was their one really good show, but the general quality of their work in the 80s was poor to horrendous.
@Curttehmurt You were lucky for that. I was born in 65, and while I still have nostalgic feelings for the Filmation NEW ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN cartoons (6 minute shorts with nearly all the DC stable), they were very rudimentary and aimed strictly at very young kids. (Which I was at the time, at least.) But until the WB shows, there really were no DC superhero shows with REAL superheroic stories. The Spider-Man and Fantastic Four shows from the 60s actually adapted comic plots.
@GoblinXXX , I was born in 1967 and remember watching re-runs of The Filmation Superman and other DC heros... then Superfriends in the 70's/80's , re-runs of Fantastic Four from the 60's as well as Spider-man and the 80's Spider-man cartoons as well as the Incredible Hulk cartoon in the 80's which I concider the best one.
@Astraldragon1 I *hated* SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS more than Hitler back then. Spidey hanging out with ICEMAN? Since when? They make up "Firestar" when he actually IS established to be friends with the Human Torch? I just couldn't handle it. (Which reminds me of the FANTASTIC FOUR show from the 70s that replaced the Torch with "Herbie the Robot", almost as horrible as the THING show where some kid turns into the Thing... But then ACTED like the comics Thing! WTF?
@DreadDormmamu That was still the same odd teen version of the Thing, it was just shown along with their superfluous FLINTSTONES revival as an hour show, for some reason. (I think eventually HB finally got the bright idea to mix CAPTAIN CAVEMAN with the Flintstones, which at least makes a little bit of sense.) But I had forgotten that they showed them together, and the title sequence even implied that the Thing was in Bedrock in the show!
@Astraldragon1 I enjoyed the HULK series that gradually got taken over by the She-Hulk, but I didn't like the other one because his pants just TURNED purple when Banner hulked out... And then un-ripped, DIFFERENT COLOR pants would just GROW back on him when he turned back. That was just plain bizarre.
I remember finding this series completely by accident in 1988 flipping the channels and hearing the Superman movie opening combined with the classic George Reeves TV narration.
@videogamester07 Yeah. And this series got me into furries. There was an espiode with a sciencist whoo transfered the best parts of serveral animals into himself. That villian scared me but he also got me thinking about creating an animal-based superhero. I had the perfect for him: Feralman.
@Markel1970A That kinda reminds me of Bwana Beast. (Another hero from the DC pantheon who you may recognize from an ep of Batman: Brave and the Bold.) Except he had the power to fuse animals together to create.....unique creatures.
@GoblinXXX Yeah. I had read a fanfiction that had Tigra go to the DC universe and she ended up being attacked by the Justice League who thought she was Cheetera, and then they found out that she wasn't and then they talked to her and they all started to like her, and one of the DC Heroes siad that she was like Catwoman. LOL
@Markel1970A That teeny tiny little string bikini Tigra wears does it for me. She even beats out the Thundercat's Cheetara. Also known as "The Thundercat's HO" ;)
Is this the one had Lois getting turned into a cyborg and she discovered that Superman and Clark Kent were the same person..and when Superman defeated the cyborg virius she turned back into a normal human and she forgot Superman and Clark were the same guy?
@nobodysperfect06 I did not mean to say that for "Superman"- I meant to say it for "Alvin and the Chipmunks". That is the one I thought you were asking me about. Sorry about the misunderstanding.
lol it's okay, but since the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon from the 1980's, and this Superman cartoon right here were both produced by Ruby-Spears Productions, I assume that is why they have similiar animation
I sure wish this version had allowed us to see what Krypton actually looked like as a planet before it exploded as well as who his natural parents Jor-El and Lara-Van looked like before they were killed. I wonder if the producers had originally planned to do more episodes with an album story at the end showing how Superman and Lex Luthor actually became enemies with eachother. The animated series in the 1990's actually did everything perfectly starting off with an origin story for that Superman.
@nobodysperfect06 Yes it does- but it also only used three villains from the comic books. That would be Lex Luthor about five times as well as the Prankster and General Zod who neither one appeared in the 1990's cartoon. The later cartoon did have some disadvantages like making Superman somewhat vulnerable to really powerful weapons as well as able to get his ass kicked by Batman. But Lois Lane at least looked like a babe in that one as she looked like a middle-aged woman in the 1980's cartoon.
don't get me wrong, I love the 90's version as well, since it actually showed Superman's origin story, and it lasted longer and had more villains. I liked the way Lois Lane looked in the 80's version, I thought she was cute as well, and Clark Kent in the 80's version, looked more like the nerdy nice-guy type just as he did in the Christopher Reeve movies. Clark Kent in the 90's version looked too Macho and tough
@nobodysperfect06 I was going to say that the 1980's cartoon ended up getting cancelled after only 13 episodes whereas the 1990's cartoon lasted up to three seasons and even ended with a cliffhanger for a spin-off with the Justice League. I read that a fourth season had originally been planned for Superman to meet another superhero in the DC universe each episode and for the series to end with them all teaming up forming the Justice League. But that just did not happen for some unknown reason.
don't you agree? that the animation in the Superman Ruby Spears cartoon, looks a lot alike the animation from the Alvin and the Chipmunks cartoon from the 1980's
@nobodysperfect06 That apparently was the style of animation back in those days. I think back then they were still hand drawing everything whereas it was not until the next decade when everything started being done totally on computer.
The intro to this ultra rare Superman series by Ruby Spears sounds even better without the narration and the sound effects. I can't wait to get this 8 CD set of Superman music and it's too bad this series is neither being aired nor released on DVD.
I know I am late in posting this- but I have my own copy of the cartoon that aired on Saturday mornings in 1988. After being used to all the episodes of "Superman: The Animated Series" that was on from 1996 to 2000- this one did look a little crappy and outdated. I at first was not happy with the episodes- but they got better as it went on. I am such a big Superman fan- I am basically getting everything of him on film including the old black and white stories made before my dad was even alive.
