I can't ride anymore technical or downhill. :( Rear disc brake failed at 40+ MPH. Slammed a tree and shattered my right shoulder and collar bone. Almost lost the use of my right arm. :( Forgot to relock the brake cable to the lever after dirt removal. Remember, ride safe, ride smart. - Still keep the handle bars on my wall. Force of impact twisted the titanium joint.

Best mountain bike i have owned was a Gary Fisher. I've never bought a bike over $800 mind you, but for a stock frame, it looked awesome, held up (I was the heaviest I have ever been), and was lightweight.

However I once rode my buddies $1600 cannondale full suspension and was blown away.

I agree it's a great sport. But don't discount dirt completely though. Look at the athleticism involved in that and you'd be really surprised. It's actually widely considered one of the world's most physically demanding sports. I race both, and I've actually been more tired after a 30 minute outdoor mx race than at any time on a mountain bike, no matter how hard/long I've ridden.
