Tom Petty's version gives the impression of a "bad boy" trying to cover his feelings while explaining what happened, trying to be tough and to cope with himself. John Mayer's version, on the other hand, is basically an all out emotional outpour. Both give the feeling of devastation, but they're simply presented with two different point of views.

McIntosh used to play with Paul McCartney on his solo tours. Any time that you hear slide guitar on a John Mayer live track...it's McIntosh.
