  • On this issue, the book Sleep Thieves by Stanley Coren is excellent. Expands on & affirms this story told here.

  • this video is exactly 1 year old today :)

  • ... No winter in africa

  • @iamzheone No food either

  • Damn you Thomas Edison!!

  • Now don't get me wrong but I've been searching on Google for lots of healthy & effective diet routine plan plan and I identified this unknown unwanted weight reduction plan program referred to as DietOramy - I am sticking to the strategy layed out and I am getting a bunch of wonderful success, and I am nevertheless eating same as before, without hunger, just a bit varied meals...

  • Holla! Have you considered cleverous 402 diet (do a google search)? Ive heard some awesome things about it and my mate lost lots of weight with it.

  • I love the crayon.

  • keep watching it . awesome video

  • aaah until you underlined summer at 7:48, I did not understand what you were holding there :)

  • i'm watching this 11:30pm need to get up 6:00am - i really had no idea glad that i know about this now - i'm going to bed!

  • when he says 'craving carbohydrates', does he mean just being really hungry?? though i agree completely with this video, i can't comprehend how you can crave a particular macro-molecule....

    someone please gimme an answer!!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO!

  • Then, what happens to people who live in tropical islands?

It is summer year-long... The seasonal changes are hardly noticeable.

  • @507PR1434 I ask because I live in Puerto Rico where we tend to eat a dish of rice and beans every day! Carbohydrates galore!

  • lol dick chalk

  • We're doomed.

  • Makes sence

  • What happens if you live on the equator? You fool.

  • @MrAlofbag

a lot less black people have obesitas. there is an abundance of FRUIT on the equator. so even if these people eat alot, it is healthyer then mcdo's you fool.

  • God hadn't created man 10000 years ago.

  • @MrAlofbag Lol

  • @MrAlofbag pls stop bringing GOd into this video. Put it else where approriate.

  • Very interesting. I was very surprised to notice that when I sleep a lot I lose weight, which seems to go against all the diet & fitness advice that is out there.

Thank you very much. This video helps to explain why. So I am not just mad!!

Best regards & thanks for posting

  • As always I love listening to you speak about our health. Learned a lot from this much needed topic.

    Wishing you continued success.

  • If you'l admit to sleeping 8 to 10 hours daily, you'l get ridiculed for having no life and not contributing to society.

Modern society seems to be ashamed of admitting that they sleep at all.

You'l ask, ''How much hours a day do you get sleep?'' And you'l get, ''Ehm probably 4 to 6 hours.'' or I often get ''Meh, I don't sleep, I'm seriouz, look at me bro, I'm srs as hell.''

  • @PullTheTricker thats so true,but u can also get 8hrs and still have a life,all about organisation

  • @PullTheTricker

True. If you slow down a bit and sleep more people do think you are very lazy, despite whatever you might achieve.

Also one of the reasons why people are overweight, depressed, addictive, on medication drugs etc

  • being a college student (Business major btw)..... u cant afford 2 go 2 bed for 50% of the time.

u juz wudnt survive thru college =[

  • Love the video but hoping I could get answers to my questions:

I live in Canada and in the winter the sun sets before I am out of work (5-6pm).

Reasonably, should I continue to go to bed around 10pm or try for earlier?

Or is the problem with not getting enough sleep (7.5h-10h/ night)?

    Thanks as always. Video Rocked.

  • @redhotgenius

I read somewhere that it is good to try and get 10-11 hours sleep a night, especially if you have any sort of chronic medical condition as over time this exhausts the adrenal gland.

The recommendation was to sleep 10pm - 9am, if possible. I did do it for a while and felt great.

  • interesting

  • 1:34 anyone else think he says 'particular' like Dr.Evil from 'Austin Powers'?

  • yo enough with this evolution nonsense! Psalm 14:1

repent for the time is near, world war 3 can start anytime!

  • thanks for putting it simply for us. think i'm going to try to take sleeping pills to get right with the sun

  • @marpoq oh god don't do that, do it naturally

  • Great video.

  • great video man! I'm a big fan of all your blogs and youtube videos! keep em comin! staying healthy is all about eating every 3-4 hours, staying hydrated all day keeping your metabolism going...and exercising/training about 5 days a week!

    THANK YA SIR!

  • Awesome video

  • Humans went through ice ages??? 2:18

  • Sean, what you say makes sense. So the question is how do we put it to the test? No one is going to follow the natural cycle of the sun and not turn on the lights at night and go to sleep.

  • Comment removed

  • now something seems to be missing in this elaborate description... hmmmm

  • Love that huge peice of chalk!

  • Keep telling the sleep homie

  • What would you recommend as a sleeping pattern then Shaun?

I try to go from 11/12pm to 8/9am. 8 hours sleep. Should I try change this up to 9/10pm to 6/7am?

  • @Toxeh Asleep by 10pm is meant to be best. Between 10 and 2 is when your body regenerates best. Sleep in late if you can. Never a problem!

  • @Toxeh

The author (T.S Wiley) of the book Lights out! who he interviewed on his radio show suggested to go to sleep within 1-2 hours(maximum!) after sunset. That could be 530pm-630pm in winter or 9:30pm-11:30pm in summer. As for waking up...up with the sun! It is all about readjusting yourself to natures time. To everything there is a season.

  • Respond to this video... So in the winter you might be sleeping 12 or so hours but in the summer only 8

  • this 'theory' goes against the blue zone ppl that live in South America who eat fruits year round.

  • @ReneeArnold thank you. i'm glad someone said it.

  • I'm watching this at 03:30am

  • Ha, I was laughing at myself because I'm watching this really late in the middle of the night. (To be fair, I've been suffering from insomnia, although I don't think the computer screen is helping while it reduced the melatonin!)

    Thanks, great video!

  • Very interesting, although if you simply didn't eat as much and had the willpower to stop you wouldn't get fat in the first place.

  • Interesting... Makes sense. Just one question though. Say you're a night shift worker... Then what?? lol

  • but its funny because i bulk in the winter, and cut in the summer as a bodybuilder. so thus going against your teachings. i respect and agree this video but haven't we evolved? i mean look how tall everyone is getting. also doesn't the geographical factor come into this genetics?

  • does it matter what time you go to sleep or how much sleep your getting?

  • ummm.... did he just say the light bulb has been around only 70 years??? wow, more like 150 years

  • @brettonlee Right but when it was first introduced it was very expensive and hence not available to everyone. 70 Years is the number he used for widespread use of the light bulb. Not sure if that's right but it sounds close.

  • I'm just totally distracted by a light switch embedded in a chalkboard.

  • So how much weight should we gain during the summer?

  • wow that was the first time I didn't understand everything throught, can you do a prequil, or a sequil? Maybe jazz it up a little bit more please? :`)

  • Put the dildo chalk down man, ewwww!

  • Good Night!

  • dildo?

  • We get so focused on the details of health and/or weight loss that we seem to have forgotten to form the foundational behaviors of eating right, sleeping right, and just plain moving the body. If you're not sleeping enough or eating simple (re: whole), non-processed foods or getting off your butt then worrying about counting carbs or calories or portions and spending hours a week on the treadmill and crunching the abs then you're wasting your efforts. DON'T BUILD YOUR HOUSE WITHOUT A FOUNDATION!

  • Makes sense...need more sleep...thank you!

  • I play music for a living but you have inspired me to get as much rest as possible.can't find the words.you are one special person saving lives. Be well and thanks.love you man!

  • Great topic. Definitely one that is overlooked often. Thanks for sharing.

  • Sean you and Dr. Mercola are two great influences I've had in my weight loss journey. I finally feel I have the tools to KEEP IT OFF this time. I dont think I could read a tenth of the books and research you two have. Thank you! Viva la Youtube! lol

  • Great video ! Well said !

  • Do all carbs lead to insulin resistance? What is your take on Matt Stone's 180degreehealth? He says that not all carbs do that. Thanks for the awesome video by the way :)

  • Good Work! Do you think this applies to the ones of us who have ancestors who lived nearer to the equator? Do you think we should cut during the winter and bulk during the summer? Or at least would it be more sensible from a hormonal standing?

  • Does Sleeping Pills Make You Fat???

  • What about people living near the equator where sun is constant?

  • Fruit does not make you fat.

  • Why is he using a dildo to point to the blackboard with?

  • Comment removed

  • People up north can't use much energy outside but even if they are outside trying to keep warm, they body expands so much energy just trying to keep them warm at that constant temperature . This is why people in the north can eat the carbs and still be thin. The problem is if one eats carbs and spends all his time in a heated environment where their body has no need to adjust and spend energy .

  • Sean, big problem with this theory is that humans are warm blooded mammals and because we need to keep constant temperatures, we eat carbohydrates for quick energy and temperature boost. This is why human civilizations have always developed in warm climates of africa, mediteranean and south asia. Only when humans learned to ferment carbs did they move and establish up north in the last few thousands of years.

  • I think sleep is great, but what about evolution? why should we try and live like we lived years ago, shouldn't we adapt anyway?

  • @yommomalama Look around you, are we really evolving?

  • amazzzing!

  • What is the good time to go to bed? Summer and Winter...

  • so in other words.... the more you sleep the less likely you will crave carbs...

  • What about people that live in Africa and South America? The days are shorter, but it's not that cold. It's still possible to grow plants and find animals for food.

  • Some people live in parts of the world where its always hot and they can grow pretty much all year round..

  • He is so smart and informational but the big pink chalk is killing me lmao.

  • what time would you suggest going to bed?

  • can't watch that video! The chalk looks like a dildo!!

What you were saying again? :) love your videos anyway

  • @iziunek - lololololol...oh man....you totally ruined BIG chalk for me...lol

Ok, now that you mentioned this when I first started watching this video-and when Sean mentioned that when the sun went down people went to bed...I immediately thought "they might not all have slept", wink-wink. Exercise program after dark-and keeps you warm during the winter! ;D

On a more serious note, does this study take in account candles or campfires? Thus allowing people to stay up longer.

  • @iziunek IT DOES LOOK LIKE A DILDO! HHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH

  • @iziunek you want to fuck it haah

  • @iziunek

So I wasn't the only one who was wondering why he'd have something like that in his hand. Thank god, then I'm still normal!

  • @iziunek Wow That's chalk?

  • Great Info

  • does it work the other way round? If we stay in a state of 'winter' will we keep losing fat??

  • @ev06dre interesting!! i would like to know that too!

  • Not all ancient peoples went to bed at night. Some stayed up to guard/keep watch over the tribe.

  • great video.

  • i enjoy your videos...

  • I have heard for many years that sleep is an important factor in losing and maintaining weight, but I never understood the physiological mechanisms as to why this was the case. Thank you Sean for providing the information as to why sleep dictates so much of our metabolism. You did a superb job.

  • Sean, awesome explanation! Thank you, it make so much sense.

  • Very good

  • lol only weak minded persons with no discipline get fat. its all about discipline.

  • Just reading these few comments shows how little people actually understand what he says

  • "the higher your cholesterol, the lower your cells' freezing temperature, so you dont freeze in the winter."

I HAD NO IDEA~ How interesting!!

  • candles ..... , animalfat torches ... just for instance ...

  • I dont want to sleep 10 hours, its bad for you and makes you more tired.

  • @ArinOngunTV Olympic power lifters sleep 14 hours a day. Marathon runners sleep 24 hours before a competitive run. How is sleep bad for you?

  • Thank God I'm homeschooled and can sleep 10 hours a night at least, right? And take naps whenever I want.

  • @XxPnuemaxX how can home schooling be good? You miss out on so much social development.

  • @slash3rr i am home schooled too and you dont mis out on anything...

  • @Mattsam1000 what kind of homeschool? Whats the reason? Because theres a lot of bad (educational wise) home schooling. Ok it might be right you dont miss out on social life.

  • @slash3rr lol what do you mean "what kind of home school"? whats the reson you go to school? just so you know people that are homeschooled are more likely to end up in a well paid and meaningful jobs, more so then people that go to school. also my social life is great i can make good freinds and have great friends, you dont need to go to school to get a good education or a good social life

  • @slash3rr Although Although you do have a point but there is tons of social development options outside of public education. Don't believe me? children's sports clubs is a great way to help your child's social life. Aside from that there is working (for pay or volunteering). There are tons of organizations outside of school. You can have your home schooling and social development too.

  • @slash3rr Yeah, and indoctrination.

  • @slash3rr By social development do you mean the part where you hang out in a click of about 5 people or the part where you sit in a chair for 5 hours every day and have to Ask for Permission to speak or take a shit? I finished high school 4 years ago, and I certainly have been developing myself socially and personally much more lately when I'm not being Forced into a situation packed together with a bunch of people who are also Forced to be there against there will. Public School is Destructive

  • @ArgosSmith2009 Your profile says you're 25 but you say you finished high school 4 years ago? By "finished" do you mean graduated or kicked out? XD

  • @JetBlack7000 Haha, forgot about that, actually I'm 22 and going to college right now. When I started this account I didn't want to put my actual age so I added a few years. And yes I hate most aspects of our educational system, and yet I'm still in it XD, but we all have to make due the best we can.

  • @ArgosSmith2009 i hated public school. if only home schooling cud have been available to me. =[ I am sure I wud be a lot smarter, rather than having to learn on everyone's level.

  • @slash3rr just because someone is home schooled doesn't mean they don't speak to other kids

  • @slash3rr apparently home schooling parents arrange frequent get togethers to socialize their children. When I was growing up most of my friends were made in my neighborhood anyway, I would have been fine without the few I made at public school

  • @slash3rr that's a stereotype... hardly true by necessity. I was home schooled and have close friends and no social trouble that I can see. It CAN be done well, and it DOES have advantages... under certain circumstances.

  • @slash3rr what a load! i've known like 8 or 10 home schooled kids.there 5x more observant. there are lots of sports offered to home schooled kids and most kids, home schooled or not get there social time with there friends AFTER school. besides have to seen schools today? why would you want you kids to be like them???

  • @slash3rr That argument makes no sense. I have lots of friends that were home schooled and they are just fine. It cuts out all the crap you get in public schools.

  • 1 question i would have is how much sleep you should have during winter nd summer? and what times u should really be going to bed and getting up

  • So I need to go to bed at like 6 pm?:(

  • FURST BABY!
