the comments below show why it is recommended these days to steer clear of particular names
it's important to be careful of using the name "gypsy" and others like "bedouin" because people expecting real gypsy dancing or real bedouin dancing may be confused or outright annoyed, ESPECIALLY when a name from their culture is used, but their culture is not being represented.
these people aren't "out of touch" with the real world, they have a legitimate concern
Up yours, Puppy! You don't know ANYTHING AT ALL about Jill Parker or Ultra Gypsy! Have you even BEEN to the SF Bay Area and seen its varitey of belly dancing? No? There, now zip it!
i was allmost born on stages like thise but old style like, and apreciated that someone is doing such a thing ...
tribal dance?-yes we got egiptian and jewish roots,in india we v been some time but oryginaly come from israel, siberya and mars. - im joking or not - thak you
they are called "gypsy" because ATS (american tribal style) came from antique groups of gypsies...and it combines different kinds of tribal dances....including gypsy ones...
otherways, this costumes are more from TFB (TRIBAL FUSION BELLYDANCE) , the ATS costumes are more folkloric and more gypsy...thats why maybe some poeple here its confused...
Don't give me that rubbish. I am what people would call "Gypsy" and my family have been before me. We do not dress or dance like this and never have. In our culture traditionally it is very offensive if one of our women danced in this fashion or dress sense. dress and dancing goes back to India. If it is only a name to them then why don't they be respectful and change it as it is a horrific misrepresentation of our culture to us.
but always respecting the other people way of thinking. you ask people to respect your culture, and for that you must respect that maybe we got wrong information :)

I understand your point of view. sometimes people misundesrtood things. i understand that like gypsy (if you say that tribal style dont have ANY influence of it) you must feel mad or angry if somebody uses that name in a wrong way. but welcome to the real world. people "misunderstand" things all the time if it is good for them. the only thing you can do is just like what you are doing: tell your truth. it is supposed that like gypsy you should know it better.
Actually the term Gypsy camed from the mistaken belief that a group of people that were driven from India 1000 years ago were EGYPTIAN. Gypsies preferred to be called Romani for that reason and. GYPSY denotes a worldwide ethnic group NOT a way of life. I don't believe they are trying to pass as Romani (romani do not expose their bellies and legs) but it would be nice if groups like these who use the term would define it properly on their site out of respect at least.
Well said. Roms find this sort of thing very crude and offensive when used in connection with themselves. Roms do not and obviously have never belly danced - their customs and true dancing have descend all the way to India and if they did belly dance it would make sense they still do. Why do gaje try re-create and corrupt our proud identity??!! What right have they?

agreed. and I don't like when bellydancers dress up a certain way and call it "gypsy"...that's like a cat dressing up as a dog and calling itself a dog.
i love the conversation that has been recorded into this video... does she say that it looks like something she would do or not? i can't quite pick it out... hmm, another sleepless night ;)
(ran out of room) The whole art scene is crap. Maybe I should say non-existant, especially not in any other arena than music- and that's pretty much nothing either! Pardon my stupidity but it looks SO Fun!! If I ever do get to S.F. I definately want to go there! I am impossibly jealous. You guys are awesome, by the way of course!
Where was this taken, some sort of festival? Never been to San Fran (yet) so I've no idea about the streets with the graphics on the walls- is it a certain place where you guys meet (from a tiny crappy town in ohio; we have nothing even remotely interesting or different here.....
These pales have horrible skin.

Why are the people too much worried for a name? "gypsy or not gypsy" whatever, they're great dancers, so just enjoy!
AngelaPlant666 3 years ago 5
If this is the case they won't mind changing it then.
This is on par with someone painting their face black like a golly wog and acting as a shoeshine boy. Then calling it black lifestyle.

agree with you

Respect and kindness to you.
I'm sure you can understand my offense. people get enough mis-represntation of us as it is already without more lies. Thank you .

by syaing they are gypsy, i do beieve they are trying to embody a certain idea, not trying to pass for the "real deal" romani.
medicatedpunkfairy 3 years ago 3
Gypsy??!!! OMG what ever next, lol
Gypsy as in short for Egyptian but definetely not as in Romani. How insultive and disrespectful.
