I tried this when I was a couple of years ago while at college. We were asked to study soundtracks but could choose whatever genre we fancied. I chose horror. I experimented with the eeriness of the infinite downward tones and scales, and the unbearable suspense of an upward scale. You know something is about to happen... but when?
there's no fixed time when the tone "resets". the whole reason it's hard to detect that there's something fishy going on is because it's gradual. the drum marking when it resets is an illusion.
If you pay attention, you can hear that it's made of two octaves, one higher, one lower, both going up. I can explain it the most with numbers. Like 10 numbers separated in two groups. The first one from 1 to 5 the second on from 6 to 10. It begins with 1 and 6 and goes up. When the group from 1 to 5 reaches 6, the second group begins from 1. Creating what seems an endless ascending tone.
it doesn't sound like it's getting higher to me..

the only reason you can hear it change is because it's changing scales in fifths..

I can hear it when it "resets" but the drum beats are just distracting enough to throw me off. Still cool though.

yeah, one kinda feels the drum accentuate the music's repeat. Maybe it doesnt even beat on the time the tone resets, but thats what it feels.

lol its actually easier with the drums because they sound when the tone drops, or starts low... or wutever

Actually the drums only make it more noticable in my opinion, but offcourse I don't know how it would've sounded without it.
