News Flash, My mother was also dropped by a member of staff in an American hospital. She has a big gush & blood pouring down her head... I'll never forget it ... Um ... no, I have been on Medicaid and it was very easy to get on it. Thankfully I make enough money to support myself. I am okay now, great job and benefits. Now I really wish the law didn't pass... cause if you had gotten HMO, we could have had the insurance companies decide if you are profitable or not (hint: if you're not profitable, the insurance company would let you die). Now law requires that the Insurance companies not do that, drats! We could have gotten rid of morons like yourself.

How common are stories like these in the UK? How common are they in the US under private insurance? What are the numbers?

try suing an insurance co for malpractice. You can't period end of story. All you can sue for is coverage and they bet on you dying before they have to provide it. The Insurance Industry runs on profit and that means they deny claims to insure that they continue making a profit. The way the laws are now all you can do is sue for the coverage they denied. In life and death situations you do not have the time to fight them in court and they know it.

You really don't know much about how Insurance Co work. How do you sue a doctor who hasn't given any care yet? Sorry to bust your bubble but I spent 15 years fighting my insurance company and met many,many families at Childrens Hospital in Los Angels who had the same problems. Most of them gave up and went bankrupt and had to go on medical to get care for their very ill children. You are confusing a doctors malpractice with an Insurance Co. refusal to provide coverage.

If they do approve a treatment, or a hospital stay, you still are not covered. They a have a little process they call "Reviewal of Claims" that;s where they get to take back monies previously paid leaving you in debt big time. Some bean counter decides that the treatment (that saved your kids life) wasn't really needed. You do know that Health Ins, was first set up as non-profit and was regulated. Then came NIxon & Kaiser who hatched a plan to make a profit.

I haven't met anyone in the predicament you mentioned and suffered a sever traumatic injury myself costing 1 mil and it was PAID by my health ins. co. Everyone else I know has had satisfactory treatment.
