Elvin had this thing with Japan... His wife... and piano players... No one else would play brushes like him - such an amazing power! And such a kind soul...
I got to reorganize richard's cabinets of sheet music for him 2 summers back. We would sit in his basement and watch westerns on amc while I was working. What a great man
Richard kicked me out of his class for talking. And don't ever put your feet on the chair in front of you; he'll kick you out for that too. Scarred me for life. He had brunch with my girlfriend. He didn't hit on her, so I guess he's okay.
@horrorjock6 really/...i had a lesson book of his back in about 1980 Steve Davis (coltrane my fav things) lived in rochester. I saw Son House in rochester (someone's livingroom!) about 1972 it was awesome, My blues teacher found him living here retired from the railroad, he taught Muddy Waters, I had Jerry Niewood as a sax teacher in 73 or so, tragically killed in an over iced plane incident, other band members not Chuck though also perished w/ pilot and the rest sad. Jerry was so fn cool!
Richard Davis is a living legend and an incredible human being!
tmgray: how long have you studied with him and what year are you at UW? also Do you go to the Bass conference in the Pyle center? I'm from Mad-city and I was fortunate enough to study with him one summer.
Wow. Richard Davis used to be a friend of mine. In 1971 he took me along to different nightclubs in NY where he performed and later on, I accompanied him to the Newport Jazz Festival where he played with six other bass players. This video brings back memories for me. Thanks.

I wonder what year this was. Looks like sometime in the 70's.

Not the tv's fault...early pickup technology, through a crappy old Fender bass amp...miked cabs, just what the bass player's putting out...

The electronic bass pick-up would account for the 'electric bass' sound.

Elvin could work the triplet in so many ways, using different limbs and different parts of the kit. Truly a school unto himself!
