  • Beautifully played..:-) such a lovely song

  • great tone and phrasing ;) Were you soloing over chord tones or specific scales or modes?

  • Great tone, great solo. Nice work!

  • @MasonRazavi Thanks a lot. Yeah, tone is so important. I constantly work on it and there's a big difference when playing without headphones I noticed.

  • love the bird lick at 1:46 ish Im a bass player and think you have a fine sense of time.

  • you are great! Bravo!!

  • you are so brilliant jazz lines performer bu jus a couple of voicing make the perfection but you sounds great

  • Great playing! And very nice woody sound. Could you tell me what guitar and pickup you're using here? Cheers!

  • now i think that's an jazz improvisation, all the way up and down through the module sounds, i'm pleased to hear music like this, rate 10

  • Just Friends - y mo afyonoría o chanfies maomao. tse dong. hahaha

I really like it. Fantastic guitarist.

    gui chao min dough, wonk?

    wonk.

  • your tough man!bravo!

  • I assume you've probably already done all this though, since you posted the vid 2 years ago!

  • Yes and no. Thank you, it's all true. It's for me also a matter of practice, gig routine. I've noticed that my plaiying changes after about 2 hr's of live playing. That's when I start actually playing less, more laid back and with more melodic sense. I wished I was doing more live gigs. Playing with my Bassplayer is also more intense and gives me more routine. I'll check your vids. Cheers, Pat

  • @enzmusic

hi, what key are you playing, is it start from F7 chord on first note?

  • I googled Just Friends Standard. I suggest that you work on the fluidity of your eight note runs. Some of the guitar BS stuff needs to be dropped; the lingering blues guitar licks have their place, but not really here. You should definitely work on your rhythm too! The one problem i see with guitar players is because they dont have to breathe they keep playing. Musically the audience wants to have a break in there. Nobody listens to the person who yells all the time. Try to seperate your phrases

  • good advice, i second this comment

  • gorgeous tone first off

i've been working my ass off on this tune for an audition and one thing i might advise is phrasing, maybe try to give it some more breathing space, kinda sounds like u just keep running on and on and on without any breath

nonetheless, ideas, harmonies, technique are great, really enjoyed this

  • Thanks for your input. I always consider things said in comments and you are right. I noticed that, by playing with the thumb the music breathes much more and lines are more melodic. Cheers, Pat

  • I really enjoyed this all the way through.Nice sound. Good ideas.

  • Wow, thanks+! I always wonder if people watch the videos to the end.

  • cool stuff. one tip; when you are done playing a phrase keep your fretting hand where it is. at 1:54 you kind of shoot your hand off the neck and hit an open string in the process. it's very natural to do these type of things, but you save time if you keep your hand where it is. :)

  • Thanks, I alays take advise seriously:)

  • my guitarist in my band always does it and its fun to watch :)

  • I had a fellow student at GIT who did this very thing! I never thought it would happen to me, lol

  • good chops..i think you play ahead of the beat a lot..maybe its intentional..but sometimes it doesnt sound in 'the pocket'..i found it helps to practice at very slow tempos(mm=40) and try hit the beat dead centre..really makes you aware of where the beat is.

  • very good comment. i do that sometimes. it is also true that in the real world it takes a lot of effort to keep up your chops, unless you're one of those rare geniuses, for me at least it means always a lot of hard work. I promise, I'll do my best.

  • What's with all the hate on this guys vid? I think he does a fine job playing the tune. It's funny because the first time I heard Charlie Parker's rendition, I somehow knew Kessel had done it. Some songs just seem to beg to be played by Barney.

  • Comment removed

  • As much as one would want to disagree, you speak the truth man

  • The Real Book changes in F. cheers, pat

  • what chords are you using, or what progression in what key?

  • I'm SO jealous right now..........

  • It's on bars 7+8. For me there are already enough II-V's in standards;-) Cheers, Pat

  • "Where as many musicians prefor to substitute the diminished chord by a II-V, I stay with diminidhed also for rehearsing purposes"

I've looked at a few lead sheets for this tune and there's no diminished chord, where do you play it?

  • any chance to get any note charts of this solo?

  • In my opinion you play the theme without swing.

  • Very nice sound, what guitar and amp are you playing through, I have a Godin Flat 5 which I play through a Fender Bassman, it sounds a little hot sometimes though, I wonder if maybe new pickups, speakers in the amp or something along those lines would help, anyways I would love to have a sound like you one day.

  • thanks:) i use a 50ties L4 and play a polytone amp. perhaps you just need to turn down the volume. perhaps the the bassman is distorting. sometimes you need to check extreme positions, like turning the treble and bass to one, and the middle all the way up, ore something else. hope that helps;-)

  • Good chops man. It's too bad there were a few notes that didn't ring as much as they could've! Oh well, such is the art of the moment. Awesome though, I wish I had those skills. I'm still new to this thing.

I want to comment though, I'm pretty sure an easier definition of standard would be any song in the real books. :D But that might be simplifying it a little.

  • very swingin', don't stop playing

  • kul pretty solid

  • altered scale?

  • wholetone

  • Just when you think you've gotten pretty good a Jazz guitar, you watch something like this and you realise that you've so much more to learn!

Incredible playing. I especially liked the quick chord changes at the beginning and the end. Thank you for uploading this wonderful clip!

  • thanks a lot, you made my day:)

  • Playing a lot, but not saying much!

  • very very nice....keep on swingin'

  • Swinging and flowing lines Pat. I agree, the 'Standard' is difficult to pin down. Most of them have a first 8, a bridge and a last eight, but there are many exceptions as we know, E.g. 'Beautiful Love'. Always seems to me to need a bridge, but I've never heard it played with one! I am working on that.

    regards

    John

  • i wonder what's the tempo the composer played it in, perhaps we would hear the changes differently... depending on tempo...

  • Spot on Pat. We know substitutions have to be the right ones, unless we play 'outside'! Polytonal chords and quartals, give me ideas. Some that I can't follow through with now I've slowed down. Happy fretting!

    John

  • help!!!! theory doesn't rhyme with me:(((

  • Aw heck! Then you must be one of those amazing gifted naturals.. Lol! You sure go through some theory on this track! Great stuff Pat. Regards

    John

  • and/or list of changes/sheet music? Sorry for the double post but it just occurred to me that could create my own backing track if I had the changes. Thanks :]

  • you have to get the so called realbook.

  • Where do you retrieve your backing tracks?

  • most of the time band in a box 2007, i also did some myself.

  • Great job! Beautifully played! I especially appreciate the angle at which this was shot ... always appreciate being able to watch great guitarist's fingers.

Great, warm sounds ... saw the comments on your amp. What kind of guitar are you playing?

  • THNX for the explanation

    Greetings Jacob

  • Ok !! And whar kind of pattern is that??

Is it from the book Patterns for Jazz

  • exactly:)132435etc in wholenotes

  • OK I experiment with that.

Another question; what do you play on the G7 (in this case) that's the only chord i don't know

  • i play a whole-tone-scale pattern by jerry cocker:)

  • OK THNX PAT,

  • oh, and for this sound a had a mic to record the guitar's natural sound and then mixed the 2 together.

  • thats sick

  • how do you get that really warm sound?? Is that the amp or the strings. Can you telle me??

  • you can do a lot already with the way you attack the strings. i try to develop a soft touch while maintaining a firm grip to the strings. howard roberts has written a good book called superchops. cheers, pat

  • OK Pat, thnx,

Can you tell me about you're AMP I want to by a polytone, cause i have heard, that this AMP will give a good Jazz-sound. What Kindda amp do you use??

And can you tell me about you're strings???

  • i use a polytone for gigs and 13th d'addario flatwounds.

i usually put the amp on a chair or a table.

  • thats a great warm sound dude

  • good licks -thx 4 that-, great performance :]

  • killer

  • a am a little rusty on some theory. what is an "A1 A2 form?"

  • the 1st 16 bars is different from the 2nd 16 bars.

  • Oh man, great stuff! I'm now a fan and have subscribed to your videos. Keep up the great work.

  • thanks a lot:)

  • good pick and finger coordination!

  • Very good sound an nice phrases, sen us more :))

  • Enz, pardon me for being so elementary, but could also be somewhat specific. For instance, how would you approach Out of Nowhere, key of G, with diminished scales? Thanks.

  • this is a run. i worked it out using my ears and checked which fingering applies best for me.

  • Yo, enz. I hear the diminished scale throughout, but could you clarify playing diminshed over--did you say the II-V or did you mean the entire II-V-I phrase?

  • i play diminished a third up or a 1/2 step higher from the root of a do 7th chord.

  • Okay, so in a blues in F, the V7 is C, and you will play off of Db? But then also if you drop down three frets you will be playing off of the IV, the Bb? Do I have this right?

  • yes, you got the principle.

  • Great job, keep up the good work!

  • Great stuff, need to see more Wes Montgomery tunes.

  • yeah nice man some really nice music in there
