The way this particular experiment works is by turning off and on, an electromagnet with strong enough force to pick up the ball bearings and then releasing the bearings before they move up towards the electromagnet, with a fast enough frequency it will seamlessly keep the ball bearings in a steady position somewhere between the electromagnet and the table, making it look like its just floating in mid air. If the frequency was modulated it would make the ball bearings move up and down slightly
