I'm making a VERY similar cube. VERY, really: same color, same size, same purposes :-)
I'm using a PIC16F687 @ 8MHz for all the stuff; it will also support serial commands, such as MIDI, and internal patterns. It's a really good way to learn how to interface devices, even if it's a very simple project!
