nothing, it's just to make it more pleasing to the eye haha however I would like to have it where she'll react to certain situations like if you get an answer correct she may do a special animation or if the answers wrong she'll have flustered look. So far I just have a victory animation when a stage is cleared but in the future I'll like to have more.
This is awesome! I have been wanting to make a psp japanese learning game for a long time, but first I have to learn to program in Lua! and in more in general! could you give me some advice? =)
Hi pumpfever, my advice would be to find ways to stay motivated. Nobody likes to follow tutorials & make apps dat ppl feel are useless. What kept me motivated was the Learning Japanese aspect & on screen keyboard I developed. Besides dat, its really just a trivia game but it's useful so dat kept me interested. As for learning Lua, I started by doing a lot of reading & following tutorials, I always try to figure things out for myself 1st. Start out simple but try to make sumthin u can be proud of
There's a lot of helpful communities out there, I suggest Evilmana & Retroemu, psp-hacks & qj.net. But I only ask for help if I'm completely stuck. When writing code, don't worry so much about it being sloppy, the most important thing is understanding why it works. That takes time & experience, once you start making new releases u start to look back & discover ways to optimize & make things cleaner. Don't get discourage if u dont understand why a function works, just keep moving forward. がんばって!
Oh for characters such as が (ga) use the analog stick to shift the か (ka) to ga. Some Char such as は (ha) you can change it from either ば (ba) or ぱ (pa) by pressing the analog stick up or downwards. you can also downshift certain characters such as つ (tsu) or や (ya) to a small っ & ゃ, this serves various purposes like if you want to type ryu in Hiragana u'll need a combination of ri (り) & yu (ゅ) which makes りゅ (ryu). I also added a Comma Period & Question Mark you can access it by hittin R+Square
I'm sure it is possible to port it over to the PS1, but this brew was designed specifically for the PSP. why are you still on the PS1? it's so old lol but granted the PS1 is my favorite console of all time. Anyways, I'm starting to creep back into this project, sorry for the long wait you guys. slowly but surely it's going to be off the hook.
I feel like i should point out that i dont see how you are actually "Learning" japanese seeing as how you would need to know japanese already to put in the correct answer, instead of actually just learning what it means, like could not tell you what CAT= in korean because i dont know korean and if there is a made like that where it would tell you it like: Cat= Gato en espanol then that would be fine but i have not seen evidence that that is so. So if there is a video with it please let me know:)
Hi there, I stormed through the game because I memorized all the words but you can display the answers by pressing R+O and it'll show up permanently on screen. The idea is to memorize all of the words & once you build up an extensive vocabulary u should naturally start to be able to string sentences together. I'm also thinking about creating a story mode to simulate conversations.
In my next video I'll show how to display the answers so that will eliminate any confusion. Thanx for informing me
What's up Notorious, you might want to give version 0.6 a try, I hear that works very well with HBL, and it's pretty much the same except for not having Japanese font. I was unaware about HBL when developing this but I'll keep it in mind on my next release and make sure everything works. Thanks for checking it out.
Yea I got the .6 version and it works perfectly! Thank you very much! this is a nice thing to have at hand and its cool I understand that the hbl probably wasnt big when you were developing this. Anyhow, I look forward to your new releases! Thanks again! XD
Hey DemiGodx, I'm back and for a while I was using the 0.6 version. I have downloaded the 0.7 version and have had success with the new HEN for ofw 6.31! Thanks a lot for this homebrew!
Man there's some exciting news coming our way in the homebrew scene. I can't wait to see where the TN-B HEN and code signing stuff takes us. I've already begun work on v.08, so sorry for prolonging it. It's still something I'm very passionate about so rest assured I won't abandon the project.
hey i have a question. on normal mode, good night is oyasumi nasai. how do i space between the words? i can only type oyasuminasai and cant proceed to the next word.
Sup Danny, for a spacebar hold R then tap right. In all other modes it's the right analog stick. Sorry I didn't have instructions with the game, I plan to add an in-game help menu in my next release.
I would suggest using romaji (Normal Mode). To be able to read Japanese proficiently you would needa familiarize yourself with the words 1st and to get to the point where you can meerly galnce at a snteence & konw waht yuor raeidng takes years becuz the mind isn't accustomed to reading words at one character rate per second. Me personally, I'm capable of reading Japanese kana it's just that I prefer romaji becuz im much faster at readin it. I know a lot of people disagree so I included Hiragana
You can probably tell I'm a big puzzle fighter fan lol actually you know How to Play demonstration by Dan Hibiki in Puzzle Fighter? I'm thinking about making a in-game tutorial like that in my game. I also want to have a Gallery section where players can unlock items when they clear a stage such as New Characters, artwork, anime clips, new outfits, that way players will be rewarded when they complete a level. I want a story mode too!
@DemiGodX Yep. It is quite compatible with HBL. For PSP
3001 and r97 it's good. The program runs with the FAT version, however it shows an unexpected error once switched to Slim.. Just a concern about stage 11; an error shows up when I run it.. I have a hunch that it's the stage11slim.lua file, because it messes up when ran on slim(v0.6).. But don't worry because stg.2 is already tough for me. And it messes up on the 0.6 version. But overall thank you for the great version, good luck on new one.
Hey man, nice program.. I just have one concern.. I am running HBL and LJ 0.6 works and all but this new version doesn't really work for me.. It shows an error of an unknown symbol.. it is most likely the Japanese characters which you can select..(こんにちは). Can you make a modded version in which everything is the same except the Japanese characters aren't included. I really like your program and I would appreciate if you can message me back ASAP.
Wow hontou ni? it works with HBL? I didn't know that, I'll have to check it out. I suspect the problem is with the Japanese characters. Although that was the main inclusion with this release. Not much else is different besides an extra stage and faster controls.
Maybe over the weekend I'll get one working for ya. But I might be busy with ebay this weekend too so.... tabun raishuu no doyoubi. wakaranai
Hey looks cool I might check it out later for some tips.
One of the main aspects I tried to put special emphasis on my game is that the user must input the correct answer in.. I've never really been good with multiple choice or flash cards, to me those methods are like trying to memorize answers for a DMV test or something where you'll probably end up forgetting unless you see the pattern again. This way I wanted to make it so the user either know or they don't, no guessing.
Yeah learning a new language is never easy, that's why I'm trying my best to make it enjoyable. There's just something about a PSP where I love how it feels when I'm typing on those buttons & I can just whip it out wherever & start practicing which motivated me to develop this.
it took me a while to type that fast & without looking but after continuous use & a lot of playing time I end up mastering the controls like any other game. Plus I'm the 1 who build it so naturally I get a jumpstart lol
Hey thanks a lot, it's been real fun making these and i've learned so much, not just from Japanese but programming also. I got lots of ideas I want to try implementing such as having an adventure stage or dating sim where you control a gaijin in Japan and have simulated conversations with Japanese characters. that might be thinking too far ahead lol. ooki na yume yume suki deshou?
