To answer the gravel/asphalt question. I live 20 miles away and I am familiar with the issue. I can assure you that all of the competitors (90% of whom are locals who race every year) wish the track is 100% gravel. Unfortunately, the other 99.5% of the year the road is used to transport tourists to the top of Pikes Peak. The erosion from these vehicles causes destruction of the surrounding environment and water supplies. Therefore portions of the road are being paved to prevent this.
