I used drive my friends NUTS teaching them the many great Burl Ives songs, this among them. His album of "Burl Ives Sings for Kids" had a GREAT collection of songs!
My dad used to entertain us with this song when we were kids, back in the 60's. We'd sit through it any number of times, and still ask for more. Thanks for bringing back those fond memories.
Just reading a great book to the children called Miracles on Maple Hill...the father in the story sings this slow song...I've only heard it by nickel creek and didn't know it was a slower song...how fun.
Hmm, I think this must be where Odetta got her version, the first one I heard. It's word for word the same. Or else they both got it from the same source. I used to think this was a purely American song, but then I discovered an English original, "Old Daddy Fox." Thanks.
no offense but thats distorted.

Thanks for posting this. I loved it as a kid and love it still. Burl Ives was almost the only American folk singer in his day.

Our grandmother sang us this song more than 50 years ago -- and her mother most likely sang it to her!

The had the book, "The Fox Went Out On A Chilly Night" when I was a kid in the 70's. It was one of my favorite books back then.

Ahh! This was one of my favorite books that my mom used to sing/read to me. I didn't know anybody sang it, much less Burl Ives :)
