Sandra has a lovely voice, showing depth and a very good dynamic push, which is necessary for fado if it is to be sung meaningfully, not as a technical exercise. She has a great future in fado, and should give Mariza a run for her money...
totally agree with this comment. Sandra's voice and presence are very special. I am not an expert on Fado and I have never been to Portugal. But if someone asked me to describe what I think Lisbon might feel like, I would say it feels like Sandra Correia's fados.
I am not a "expert" either, but I have sung in various venues in the past (choral, rock), so I know a little about voice. I was thrilled to hear Sandra, since many of the older videos on YouTube do not give the qualities of voice that you would get from live performance, and I'd like to think that Amalia, Dulce, Mariza, and other leading fado artists would sound like her if I could hear them live.
There are clips of Mariza live from a concert in Lisbon, and of Adelia Pedrosa live in Sao Paulo, and the sound quality on those are all good. Also, Cristina Branco, Margarida Guerreiro, Rui Pedro Oliveira who does some really interesting things with music, also live. I like them all very much, and I love the Portuguese language. It's very rich and poetic. I read some of Camões's sonnets after Sandra recommended them, and they're beautiful. Adelia and Sandra are the fadistas I like best.
I agree with you - the newer videos have much better quality, and I have listened/watched many. I'm speaking of the rather "aged" ones from the 60's or earlier. There, not only is the video poorer, but vocal strength does not come through. I have recordings of Amalia, for instance, that sound much better, but I'd give anything to have heard her live!
It would have been nice, but it would also mean going back to the 40sor 50s for that when her voice was its sweetest. I guess we can hope to hear some of the new singers live. I would love to see Sandra perform live, for example. I think she's great. I never get tired of her voice.
Muito Bonito...
