I agree with everything on this video, especially the Johnsons Clear... sometimes named "Future" tile polish being used. My only change from the video techique... is that after painting the frames.. I dip the entire canopy into a small bath of Future polish, then allow the excess to drain off.. that way, both sides of the canopy are coated.
Awesome! great job bro thanks for this video, it helped me a lot, I'm a beginner at this just started this year and I really needed a lot of tips just working on my first Airfix right now! haha thanks!
fore the canopy's to paint it works realy good i'm 15 year's old and i do modelbuilding fore 1 year now and this is the first airplane where i paint the canopy .But in belguim we don't have KLEAR and my english is not so good so i don't know what it is .But i here that if you use "farblose"paint on the inside of the canopy it don't mist to . can you check that ? ore tell of it works ?
@neukertjeful I suppose that by 'farblose' you mean colourless paint.. or possibly varnish?? I have never heard of anyone over here using that on a canopy, so don't know itf it works well or not.. You may be able to find 'Klear' under the new name 'Pledge Floor Polish with Future Shine', if you look in the shops.. As for the music, I can't remember the name of the last song, but you can find it on the Incompetec website.. :)
@neukertjeful Do you know that Christianity is correct? The world around us reveals that G-d DOES exist, and the historical evidence reveals that Jesus Christ really did come to this earth and there is overwhelming evidence that Jesus Christ really did physically rise from the dead. Jesus is coming again and the signs of the end times that were foretold in the Bible are coming to pass.
@Jaaaaaaake96 I don't sell any of my models.. but I have given a couple of them away.. :) I have most of my stuff packed away at the moment, it's not all that easy to access them all..
@Frserthegreenengine I'm not sure.. but from what I have just read up online it probably will work! I recommend strongly you try it on something else first though, before applying it on a model.. :)
@jakem1900 A friend of mine got it for me at a model show a few years ago.. :) But I found (and bought) another Airfix Bulldog kit at the RAF Museum (Hendon) Model Show in May this year, so they are still available from model traders.. It's not that uncommon a kit, at model shows.. :)
You know on a sheet of postage stamps, the bigger part that is the label? I just paint that, then cut into strips and put it on the canopy, and you can move it around till it's exact. It is a crisp line, though one strip has to go over the other where they intersect, which is bad. To fix the canopy to the plane, Humbrol Clearcote seems to be less bad than anything else I've tried.
@mookins45 That sounds like a good method, I must try it at some point... ;) :) Humbrol clearcote is good, but personally I would use Humbrol ClearFix for the canopies.. :)
Is there a collection of videos that I can use to learn basics about everything. I mean I have no clue on how to begin what tools to use but I am very interested and have already bought a couple of kits.
If someone can point me to videos that start from the very beginning and cover everything till the finished kit, I'll be very thankful.
@Chanderjeet I have a few how to' videos, you uust have to browse my channel.. :) Other than that, just keep searching on YouTube, there are lots of different videos out there.. :)

@madarsrider25 The Airfix kit?? It's from 1960, but for many years it was all you could get.. and to me it's still a good kit, as long as you don't expect 100% accuracy.. :) :)
@BasicModelling yeah im building it now and it dosnt have very good detail and would be one of the easiest kits iv built but anyway i still enjoy it :) are you going to make more videos??
@madarsrider25 Yes, I will.. I have one morevideo to post from my last build of LAST year, but my current project, which is a B-24 Liberator has just reached the decalling stage and will take another few days to complete, so that video won't get posted for some time yet.. I also have a video to make of my sons latest model, the Eurofighter.. :) There won't be any more tutorials for a while though.. :)
@BasicModelling Sounds good mate, i was wondering do you know or have a list of all the spitfire models, for example mk.1a or mkvb, prxix etc.. thanks
@madarsrider25 Do you mean a video play list?? If so I haven't but maybe I should create one each for my Spits, my Hurricanes and P-47 Thunderbolts?? :)
@BasicModelling Yeah that would be good, but i was wondering do you know all the types of spits that were made because i want to try and build every single model? :)
@madarsrider25 I don't know them by heart, but I have a couple of books.. but your best source would be to look them up online, if you can't find a book yourself for reference.. .. but as for EVERY version of the Spitfire, you won't achieve that in one lifetime.. officially there's 24 Marks, plus 9 marks of Seafire, plus the prototypes, and the Speedfire.. and then you have the Spitefuls and Seafangs.. and all the subvariants.. you are looking at 100's of different versions...:) :)
@madarsrider25 Well, last month I did a lot of Spitfires, as my club will have Spitfires as an exhibition theme for a model show in May.. Normally I just build whatever I fancy at the time, but this year I try to set a theme for each month, to give me some extra motivation.. This month I'm building US Heavy Bombers, and next month it will be a mix of Dive Bombers, like the Stuka, Helldiver and Saab B17.. I'm not buying any new kits at the moment, but pick from my stash.. :)
@BasicModelling Ok, i look forward to seeing more videos if you put any up! i still havn't been able to finish watching all your vids because there is so many of them hahaha. I've made a video of my messerschmitt bf109f and my avia b.534, so they should be up on youtube soon and of course ill be putting up a video of my Boulton Paul Defiant :)
@madarsrider25 I'm posting a video a week, roughly.. today it was an Inbox review of the Revell Helldiver, that somebody asked me to do.. :) Please let me know when you post the videos as I don't want to mis them.. :)
Nice little guide here, it appears we use similar methods for our canopys (i put them on last) however i use a knife to scratch off the paint - gently as not to harm the plastic! i'm building revells flying fortress, so i'll have ALOT of canopys to paint!!
@SloppybobStudios I prefer the wooden toothpicks or cocktail sticks as they don't scratch the plastic either way.. :) Is it the new 1/72 Revell Fortress you're building?? I'd love to see it.. Tried to get the kit but none was available at the time, so I had to settle for the Academy B-17 G kit instead.. :)
@SloppybobStudios I haven't built it yet, it's on the list after the Liberator.. :) I think the Revell kit probably is the better one of the two, and you get more options as well.. The Academy kit only gives you the one.. :P
Brilliant tutorial once again! :) I will check under the sink and see if we have any Klear next time I need it, which will be quite soon. I am near the end of the FA2 build. I will fit the canopy last, as I usually do ;)
@everythingman987 You can sand it down and repolish the canopy, using toothpaste.. but it's not an easy process.. and I have never tried it, so I can't say how well it works, or not..
does humbrol enamels come off with a cocktail-stick? it comes off with the normal paints you get with the airfix kits. it doesnt even come off with revell paints!
What is Klear, future and pledge!? Floor polish perhaps? im australian and dont know these brands. Btw im building my first model in 20 years and decided to try masking tape to do the canopy. turned out crap and now theres tape gum on the clear plastic, so dont do that! :))
@00sven00sven00 Klear et.c are brands of floor polish, yes.. but I don't think they are sold in Australia, unfortunately.. I guess you should be able to order some online, though.. :) I try to avoid masking canopies, for the same reason.. :P
you can paint the canopy frame lines black first, then go over them in the true paint colour, or natural aluminium. That way you don't get the translucent backlighting effect. Caused by light coming through the canopy framing. It does however mean you have to paint them twice. But as you have just seen in the video, a sharp toothpick will remove unwanted paint. Also, white glue can be used to stick on vac formed canopies, just make sure you file them to a perfect fit
I live in Europe (Norway), and i am sour because we don`t have Future/Johnson Klear. I have heard so much positive about this product, but i must do without it.
When i was younger i used to brush off "leftovers" with a thin pencil with a small amount of white spirit on, and gently lead it along the edge of the painted edges. This works great, but on the downside you may have to coat the canopy due to fogging. It depends on your skill.
@mybluebelly True.. I find that using a wooden toothpick without any spirits works quite well too, as long as the paint is well and truly dry and doesn't smear.. :)
what i did to attach my canopy to my new P-51D was took a nice old brush, and took some of that testers glue you get in a tube, and took just enogh glue to apply it good, and basically painted the glue on the spots where i wanted the canopy to go. it gave it a nice clean look, and allowed for a nice fit, and its durable too.
@Mobius1188 However, dipping them in Johnsons Klear / Future / Pledge floor polish / wax BEFORE gluing the canopies in place can, and normally do, prevent misting.. Just make sure the Klear / Future / Pledge is perfectly dry and set first, before gluing.. You can also use the Klear (et.c) as a canopy glue on it's own accord, it is very effective and does not mist the canopies or other clear parts..
@Mobius1188 I'm afraid there's very little that can be done once a canopy is all misted up with glue.. There is a technique involving fine wet'n'dry sandpaper and then polish it up with toothpaste, but it is nothing I have ever tried.. some minor cases can be repaired to a degree, if dipped in Johnsons Klear / Future / Pledge floor polish / wax.. but it is not a method with great results either..
Johnsons Klear , how i fix my canopies to ,it also great for painting a matt surface before applying the decals and as a sealant coat before weathering and also as a final varnish. The more coats you put on the glossier the result is , also you can matt acryillic over it to dont think it reacts with anything once dried......!!!!!!
Johnson's Klear floor polish? Who'd have thought it?!! I must admit, I use the PVA method myself, I've never had any problems with it, and if it's a bit thick, just dilute it with a drop of water!
@bruce3371 I use PVA if there's a slight gap between the canopy and the model, as it helps filling the gap beautifully.. I also use it to med slightly cracked canopies! If you pour a small amount of KLEAR into a bottle top, and leave it to go a little bit thick, it does the same job.. and you can also use ut to make glazing for small windows or camera ports.. but for good fitting canopies I use KLEAR straight out the bottle, as it works really well.. :)
@257411 I really like Hasegawa kits, especially their 1/72 Saab J35 Draken.. :) But I think overall all the Japanese kit makes, like Tamiya and Fujimi are all good.. :)
Being an amateur who only does 1:72 scale planes, I've never had the stones to try and paint the lines on cockpits due to the fear of ruining it, but your method looks really good, I'll definately try it on some of my models ^^
@BerndenLivien I know the feeling... It can probably be repaired, using toothpatse and a soft polishing cloth, but it's not a technique I have used, so I can't tell you how.. :P
@Zuchrizal Johnsons KLEAR is a floor polish, but it's not manufactured anymore. You can still find it if you're lucky, in some countries.. It's now called PLEDGE floor polish or something like that, but it is slightly different from the original KLEAR..
I've bought a bottle of something called PLEDGE extra protection wax which doesn't give come anywhere near the original KLEAR. It is good for fixing the canopy to the model though. I'm masking my canopies using Swanny's method.
@AltCtrlFreak I have read mixed reviews about Pledge, some say it works as good as Klear, and some (like you) says it doesn't.. I'm sticking to Klear (literally) for as long as my stock will last.. and after that I will just PANIC!!!! :)
I'm rapidly approaching the canopy fixing on the Spit and have managed to obtain a bottle of this magical liquid, so will be giving it a go! I'll also employ it on that Revell Alouette helicopter too!
Just go careful, as you would with anything else.. can't see it causing any problems though, with any of those canopies! You can airbrush the stufff as well, for decalling and varnishing purposes, but I recommend the use of a small pointed brush along the edges between the canopy and the fuselage, the capillary movement (or whatever its called) will ensure enough of the stuff gets where it has to go.. (normally) :) Then leave well alone over night, if possible.. :)
I haven't got round to weathering my planes as much yet, but I do weather my tanks when I build any.. My personal taste is that 'less is more'.. sometimes it is easy to overdo the weathering and you end up with a model that looks not quite right! I haven't got anything to weather at the moment, so can't make a video of it for a while but I suggest you check out the channel 'svinehunden', as he is very good at weathering.. Just tell him I sent you.. :) :) Thanks.. :) :)
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.. it depends.. but if I do I generally then also do a coat of matt varnish, as the Klear can make it quite glossy.. :)
I have a Heller Hurricane Mk.IIc in 1/72 which is all over black.. and I will try to use thin decal strips on that canopy, just to see if that looks any better! Some people claim it to be the very best way to do it.. which is fine if you have the patience to cut them all out.. :)
They're old toolings, a bit like Airfix.. some can be quite basic.. but that's why I like them! And just like Airfix they have issued some kits that no other manufacturer has bothered with! Also, they have, or used to have a very good selection of Swedish aircraft.. Just beware that like all other model makes, some models are absolutely brilliant.. and some are best forgotten about.. :) I guess I should get some Heller stuff out and build it.. :)
Liquid Frisket is another name used. Water color artists use it to mask the areas on the paper they don't want paint. Makes a good making material. Just use a pencil eraser to remove.
Humbrol makes a similar product, which I have, but not yet used.. Right now I can't think of the name though, and I'm too lazy to go down and look.. Oh yes, I think it's called 'Maskol' or something like that.. :0)
The best stuff to use for masking is gum arabic. Paint on a couple of layers and let it dry. When you want to remove it just use a pencil eraser. This is great for areas you do not want paint to get on.
Damn! I've just finished a Revell 1/72 Stuka, & if I would have watched this, I could have saved myself some scratches on the canopy. I didn't do bad this time though, Clearfix does the job for me.
I either use a cocktail stick (just keep dipping it in, & spreading it on the surface), maybe a cotton bud, or maybe just a naffed up paintbrush. Anything to spread it with really :)
I tried brushing it on, Very enjoyble & easy. Ive given 2 coats on a model but im struggling to get an even gloss finish. Its getting all patchy for me.
I clean it in plenty of water.. then some soapy water.. and then clean water again, that seems to do the trick.. :) If not you can always try some ammonia based window cleaner.. I have heard that it works well, but haven't tried it yet, so can't guarantee the brush softness after.. :)
Yepp thats what i do. Soapy water & under the sink tap at high pressure. But its not enough. I am looking for a cleaner with ammonia because ammonia alone is tough to find and very dangerous..
Amazon sells it, but NOT cheap, almost double the price to normal.. e.bay has some as well.. and there's a few websites, like one called 'choicefulDOTcom'.. Do a search for Johnsons Klear.. :)
Can I take it then that the Klear acts as adhesive too and holds the canopy in place?

wammyburger 1 year ago
@wammyburger As long as the paint is properly dry it can be removed with a stick, in most cases.. yes..:)

What is Klear, future and pledge!? Floor polish perhaps? im australian and dont know these brands. Btw im building my first model in 20 years and decided to try masking tape to do the canopy. turned out crap and now theres tape gum on the clear plastic, so dont do that! :))
00sven00sven00 1 year ago
@00sven00sven00 Klear et.c are brands of floor polish, yes.. but I don't think they are sold in Australia, unfortunately.. I guess you should be able to order some online, though.. :) I try to avoid masking canopies, for the same reason.. :P
BasicModelling 1 year ago
you can paint the canopy frame lines black first, then go over them in the true paint colour, or natural aluminium.

It depends on your skill.
mybluebelly 1 year ago
@mybluebelly True.. I find that using a wooden toothpick without any spirits works quite well too, as long as the paint is well and truly dry and doesn't smear.. :)
BasicModelling 1 year ago
what i did to attach my canopy to my new P-51D was took a nice old brush, and took some of that testers glue you get in a tube, and took just enogh glue to apply it good, and basically painted the glue on the spots where i wanted the canopy to go. it gave it a nice clean look, and allowed for a nice fit, and its durable too.
angryace13 1 year ago
@Mobius1188 However, dipping them in Johnsons Klear / Future / Pledge floor polish / wax BEFORE gluing the canopies in place can, and normally do, prevent misting.. Just make sure the Klear / Future / Pledge is perfectly dry and set first, before gluing.. You can also use the Klear (et.c) as a canopy glue on it's own accord, it is very effective and does not mist the canopies or other clear parts..
BasicModelling 1 year ago

I must admit, I use the PVA method myself, I've never had any problems with it, and if it's a bit thick, just dilute it with a drop of water!
bruce3371 1 year ago
@bruce3371 I use PVA if there's a slight gap between the canopy and the model, as it helps filling the gap beautifully.. I also use it to med slightly cracked canopies! If you pour a small amount of KLEAR into a bottle top, and leave it to go a little bit thick, it does the same job.. and you can also use ut to make glazing for small windows or camera ports.. but for good fitting canopies I use KLEAR straight out the bottle, as it works really well.. :)

Hello. I know this is a stupid question, but what is KLEAR?
This thing is nowhere can be found in my country, so I'm going to buy something that is similar to KLEAR...
Zuchrizal 1 year ago
@Zuchrizal Johnsons KLEAR is a floor polish, but it's not manufactured anymore. You can still find it if you're lucky, in some countries.. It's now called PLEDGE floor polish or something like that, but it is slightly different from the original KLEAR..
BasicModelling 1 year ago
@BasicModelling
I've bought a bottle of something called PLEDGE extra protection wax which doesn't give come anywhere near the original KLEAR. It is good for fixing the canopy to the model though. I'm masking my canopies using Swanny's method.
AltCtrlFreak 6 months ago
@AltCtrlFreak I have read mixed reviews about Pledge, some say it works as good as Klear, and some (like you) says it doesn't.. I'm sticking to Klear (literally) for as long as my stock will last.. and after that I will just PANIC!!!! :)
BasicModelling 6 months ago
I'm rapidly approaching the canopy fixing on the Spit and have managed to obtain a bottle of this magical liquid, so will be giving it a go! I'll also employ it on that Revell Alouette helicopter too!
BradThunder 2 years ago
Just go careful, as you would with anything else.. can't see it causing any problems though, with any of those canopies! You can airbrush the stufff as well, for decalling and varnishing purposes, but I recommend the use of a small pointed brush along the edges between the canopy and the fuselage, the capillary movement (or whatever its called) will ensure enough of the stuff gets where it has to go.. (normally) :) Then leave well alone over night, if possible.. :)

great video thank v. much!
im trying to take my modelling to the next level by weathering my models.
(if u weather your models) could you please make a video.
caould you please tell me now though if oyu know how to paint paint chips???
how??
thankyou
pierrespringuel 2 years ago
I haven't got round to weathering my planes as much yet, but I do weather my tanks when I build any.. My personal taste is that 'less is more'.. sometimes it is easy to overdo the weathering and you end up with a model that looks not quite right! I haven't got anything to weather at the moment, so can't make a video of it for a while but I suggest you check out the channel 'svinehunden', as he is very good at weathering.. Just tell him I sent you.. :) :) Thanks.. :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
awsome thankyou very much.
by the way, how long have u been in the hobby ?
pierrespringuel 2 years ago
A couple of years... I should really be airbrushing by now, but I have nowhere to do it, so I'm still doing it by hand.. :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Thanks. Do you paint KLEAR over the rest of the model (on top of the paint)?.
nouterbr 2 years ago
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.. it depends.. but if I do I generally then also do a coat of matt varnish, as the Klear can make it quite glossy.. :)

I have a Heller Hurricane Mk.IIc in 1/72 which is all over black.. and I will try to use thin decal strips on that canopy, just to see if that looks any better! Some people claim it to be the very best way to do it.. which is fine if you have the patience to cut them all out.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
the f-117 canopy fits poorly lol i had to hold it down while the glue dried
jordyboy321 2 years ago
Oh, the times I've had to do that... :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
@BasicModelling it wasnt even airfix it was heller have u heard of them
jordyboy321 2 years ago
Heller is one of my favourite kit makes to build.. :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
@BasicModelling really? i thought they were some cheap make or summat ill go buy more lol
jordyboy321 2 years ago
They're old toolings, a bit like Airfix.. some can be quite basic.. but that's why I like them! And just like Airfix they have issued some kits that no other manufacturer has bothered with! Also, they have, or used to have a very good selection of Swedish aircraft.. Just beware that like all other model makes, some models are absolutely brilliant.. and some are best forgotten about.. :) I guess I should get some Heller stuff out and build it.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
well thanks for the info ill go and get sum heller and airfix stuff from a shop lol i find it quite relaxing until it goes wrong lol
jordyboy321 2 years ago
I wish I could go there too.. shops stocking Heller is a rare find these days.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
@BasicModelling well if they do sell heller ill let u no :D
jordyboy321 2 years ago
Liquid Frisket is another name used. Water color artists use it to mask the areas on the paper they don't want paint. Makes a good making material. Just use a pencil eraser to remove.
VisionQuest2012 2 years ago
Humbrol makes a similar product, which I have, but not yet used.. Right now I can't think of the name though, and I'm too lazy to go down and look.. Oh yes, I think it's called 'Maskol' or something like that.. :0)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
The best stuff to use for masking is gum arabic. Paint on a couple of layers and let it dry. When you want to remove it just use a pencil eraser. This is great for areas you do not want paint to get on.
VisionQuest2012 2 years ago
Damn! I've just finished a Revell 1/72 Stuka, & if I would have watched this, I could have saved myself some scratches on the canopy. I didn't do bad this time though, Clearfix does the job for me.
Konstanz2233 2 years ago
I can't get bon with clearfix, but maybe I should try it again! How do you apply it?? :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I either use a cocktail stick (just keep dipping it in, & spreading it on the surface), maybe a cotton bud, or maybe just a naffed up paintbrush. Anything to spread it with really :)
Konstanz2233 2 years ago
I'll give it another go, when I next apply a canopy.. :0)

Dont you love the smell Klear has! But its a beast to airbrush :(
AdrianNtart 2 years ago
I don't sit and sniff it on a daily basis.. but yes, it's not a bad smell! I brush mine on.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I sniff it when ever i use it!
I tried brushing it on, Very enjoyble & easy. Ive given 2 coats on a model but im struggling to get an even gloss finish. Its getting all patchy for me.
AdrianNtart 2 years ago
I have the same problem.. but after a coat of your desired varnish, i.e matt, silk or gloss, the patches goes away... :) :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
How do you clean your brush after using Klear? i clean with water but when it dries my brush will feel a bit abit stiff :/
AdrianNtart 2 years ago
I clean it in plenty of water.. then some soapy water.. and then clean water again, that seems to do the trick.. :) If not you can always try some ammonia based window cleaner.. I have heard that it works well, but haven't tried it yet, so can't guarantee the brush softness after.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
Yepp thats what i do. Soapy water & under the sink tap at high pressure. But its not enough. I am looking for a cleaner with ammonia because ammonia alone is tough to find and very dangerous..
AdrianNtart 2 years ago
Yes, neat ammonia is too strong... it'll kill the brush, (as well as yourself)!! Which is why the window cleaner is a good alternative.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
KLEAR acts as a glue, also? The stuff or miracles for a model maker!
PenRua 2 years ago
Glue, varnish, decal solution.. it is very versatile.. I even use it as a wash, mixed with some Xtrarylics paint.. :)
BasicModelling 2 years ago
I'm scouring Google looking for some where to buy this stuff, but to no use. I have to try find it. Any online retailers you know of?
PenRua 2 years ago
Amazon sells it, but NOT cheap, almost double the price to normal.. e.bay has some as well.. and there's a few websites, like one called 'choicefulDOTcom'.. Do a search for Johnsons Klear.. :)
