I think it won't give you absolutely nothing in total warmth inside the room since you just block off the direct sunlight that is entering the room anyways. Without your contraption the sun would heat up directly the floor, windowsil, plant, desk or whatever. Your solar "heater" just blocks off a part of the window. The heater would be much more effective when places on the outside in front of a well insulated wall where it could heat up and blow the warm air inside. Nevertheless, love our vids
I would love to recreate this myself. I get it for the most part. So, you took downspouts, and placed cans inside of them? and you cut both top and bottoms of them off? how much space is between the ends of spouts and the box? is the one solar panel powering both fans? thanks!
@h2obizza Yes, I took aluminun cans and cut off the top with a can opener and used a step drill bit and made holes in the bottom. I placed as many cans as I could in the downspout without the cans sticking out of either end. I am using 1 small solar panel for each motor that I have. I used a high heat spray paint made for grills and bbqs. Thank you for the questions, Lonny
great concept for areas with strict bylaws, that is if you dont want light coming into a window, Putting a well designed box on the south facing part of your house that is sided acts in effect as another window in your house. Even better at night , with airflow shut off to the box, no lost heat unlike a window in your house. Also the faster you run air through a box, the less time it has to heat up, the faster the flow the cooler the air that comes out , dwell time in the box is a factor
This is a great idea and I want to use it in my workshop - I have double doors which have glass top and bottom and do not need the light, so these would work perfect. I take it one fan draws the air from the room and the other outputs the heat from the panel? do you think computer fans would work? and one last thing how is it on cloudy days.
@FCBHC You are correct that 1 fan draws air in from the room and the other fan puts it into the room, I have been using 1 old computer fan and it works great so far. It does not much of anything on real cloudy days. Thanks for the question, Lonny
I am actually building one of these's for my Green house project and i was wondering. Would it help if you use like insilation on the sides to make more heat?
@goloet The only time I have used insulation is for the solar heaters that sit outside. Because I do not want any of the heat to get out. I do think that it might help you get a slight increase in temperature in your indoor solar heater. Thanks for the question, Lonny
love your window heater am making one myself. where did you get your solar panels from? do you find they put out alot of power?
i bought two little fans and will take them apart and try to figure out how to wire everything. for me that's the hardest part since i'm a novice at it.
@msguit I was able to win one of my solar panels from a contest that robertsmith3 holds every month for a free solar panel. The other one I had left over from a old solar powered water pump. I had some old small blades that I just attached to that solar powered water pump motor to make a fan. They both really seem to have a nice output of power . Thanks for the question, Lonny
I think your channel is great and I really enjoy your videos...very informative. I would really appreciate you showing how you built this solar window heater in more detail. Thanks! };-)
This is a good approach if the window would otherwise be covered, but letting all of the direct sunlight into the room is actually more efficient. I was thinking a set of metal vertical blinds painted black on the outside facing surface might be smartest as it allows a covered window to use the solar energy but still allow all or none of the window to be let natural light through as desired. The black metal blinds would use free convection to transfer the heat energy to the air. Nice video.
@Fearlessthinker In our case this window has to be completely covered because it is our bathroom window. But I really like your metal blind painted black idea. I will have to look into that. Thanks, Lonny
@Fearlessthinker Do you think spray painting aluminum vertical blinds black would work? I would like to augment my home heating by doing something simple like that instead of a huge unit hanging outside.
@Fearlessthinker funny you say that about solar window blinds... someone is already making them. They look like vertical blinds but are sort of elliptical tubes.
