Do you raise Gulf Fritillary? I recently found a frozen caterpillar outside, resuscitated it, but it's not doing too well.... I would like to raise Gulf Fritillary, but it's almost winter. I planned on growing some Passion Vine in a small indoor greenhouse/ vivarium, and then I wanted to order Fritillary eggs.
I was wondering- do they readily mate? Eggs are very expensive, and I would like to be assured that I wont have to buy them twice, three times, four times, etc.
I have raised them a few times, having collected the eggs/caterpillars on Passionvine.
If you have Gulf Frits in your area, just put your Passionvine plants outside in the summer when they are flying, and let the females bring the eggs to you!
Captive breeding is tricky. They may be able to mate and complete their life cycle in a large, open-air aviary, but you will need to introduce new genes periodically to prevent inbreeding, or your population will eventually get weak and die-off.
Thanks for the quick reply. It turns out that only Monarchs, Painted Ladys, American Ladys, and Red Admirals are allowed to be shipped into my state. I'm very disappointed. On the flip side I wouldn't mind getting a good crop of healthy milkweed going in the backyard to start bringing in Monarchs. I have a packet of frost-hardy milkweed seeds on the way. Hoping to get an indoor deal going in a bit, and then move it all outside when it heats up.
I wondered that, myself. Seems like a pretty serious physical event, but I don't know if they can feel pain or not. Hard to tell with bugs One thing for sure - if they DON'T do it, they'll die. =)
this is beautiful and absoluetly amazing! thanks for sharing! i actually witnessed a gulf fritillary butterfly lay her eggs, the caterpillars grow (and devour my passion vine, lol) and am currently watching a pupa hanging above for about 5 days now. i'd like to be able to photograph the butterfly as it emerges. do you know typically what time of day this happens?
Sounds like you have a good project going there! Most butterflies emerge in the morning, usually between 2 and 5 hours after it gets light. Temperature also plays a role - warmer temps encourge emerging. After about 10-14 days in the chrysalis, the butterfly will be VERY visible inside the pupal case, and you can expect it to emerge not long after. If you keep the pupa right in front of you all morning, with your camera ready, you'll stand a good chance of filming it :-)
More like a serious amateur... been at it for many years, but only recently have I been seriously doing the documentary thing. Thanks for checking it out! :-)
It sure looks like it but actually it just shed its skin. Each stage of a butterfly's life starts with a molting of it's previous covering (either a skin or shell of some sort). Thanks for watching :-)
man thats amazing... makes you wonder if its even really the same organism or if the previous organism was literally a bio-factory for creating the second.
One of those amazing life cycles like how mayflies emerge without a mouth or stomach and have literally hours to live to mate and die.
I found that amazing too - they basically liquify in the pupa and then reform into a new creature - it really is like a totally different organism. There are a few moth families that don't eat as adults (Saturniidae, Giant Silk Moths are one of them) - they survive for a few days on stored body fat - just long enough to mate and lay eggs. Thanks for watching/commenting! =D
I have some excellent news to report: ALL FIVE OF OUR CHRYSALIDS BECAME BUTTERFLIES !!! Even the one that fell on the floor of the habitat !!! OH ! I am SOO HAPPY ! I was not sure if all of them would emerge, but sure enough - this morning, the kids and I caught the last two clinging to the wall, just emerged, and their little wings just starting to unfurl ! OH MY GOODNESSSSS ! This is just fantastic ! I am a Mommy to 5 new Painted Lady Butterflies ! :D YAYYYY !
~~ on a side note, I have them hanging up on the ceiling because I have two kitties... When I take them down, the boy cat just LOVES watching them ! I snapped some photos of him rolling on his back to catch a better view ! LOL He has been a very good boy about leaving them alone... but he sure makes some CUTE faces as he watches ! LOL... (don't worry, they are never left unatended !) ;)
Thanks again JC ! Your video and info is awesome... Thank you thank you ! :) XOXO
I'd like to know how long it takes for them to emerge from their chrysalid... I had one hatch while we were out, and one looks ready, but am wondering how long it actually takes to burst out so the kids can see !!! HOW COOL IS THIS ?!?!?! I love your vid btw ! :D Thanks !
It should take 10-14 days to develop from pupation, depending on temperature. About 1-2 days before emerging, the butterfly can be seen, crystal clear through the pupal case. It only takes about 30 seconds to emerge, and perhaps 10 minutes for wing expansion. They like to emerge 1-4 hours after first light, but that varies a bit. Warmer temps speed them up, and darkness may prevent a "ripe" pupa from emerging until you're ready and take it out into the light. Good luck! :D
You are totally cool ! Thank you for the kynd response... I didn't know they come out so fast ! :D One fell on the ground of the habitat, so I really hope it is okay. :( The open one is just clinging to the side, it's wings are pretty big but I have not seen them open up yet... this is so exciting ! :)I hope the other 3 that are still hanging emerge. Perhaps we will have to wait till morning. :D
THANKS SO MUCH for the excellent info ! :) I will PM you so check your messages ! *PEACE*
If it was the adult butterfly that fell, it should be OK, but it will need to climb up and hang from something immediately during wing expansion or its wings will be deformed.
If a pupa fell it should also be ok so long as it didn't break open. Pupae need to hang during the hardening process also, or the pupal case (and developing adult) will be deformed as well. Picky litte bugs, eh? :D
I have some of the caterpillars in my back yard. I am a teacher and would love to put them in a habitat for my classroom so my students can see the amazing changes. Are the caterpillars hard to take care of?
Make sure you let them harden (dry) for at least a couple of days before you try to handle them. Use a sharp knife to scrape loose the silken pad from the surface they are attached to. Then, suspend the chrysalis by that silk pad (use glue or tape) in the same rientation in which you found it. Have you got any pics or videos of them?
No, unfortunatley i dont have a video cam or camera. i have to pick them off the ground because my dog likes to play with them, and then kills them on accident. So i started to notice their cacoons on the walls of my house, and patio chairs and i dont want them to die. Its funny how they cacoon wherever they want instead of the passion flower vine. Your video is awesome, i cant wait to see mine emerge as butterflies!
If they are for sure Gulf Frits, make sure that you hang them upside down (same way you found them) so that when they emerge they can hang just like mine did in the video. It only takes them 10-14 days to emerge (at least that's how long mine took). Have fun! :)
I have a bunch of cocoons that have formed on my passion flower, that have not emerged yet and it has been over a month. Do you think they didn't make it :( They are not even wiggling, and I have seen some, in the past that do.
The chrysalids may be still alive and not wiggle. The best way to tell is to see if the tail-end (abdomen) is still flexible. if the whole chrysalid is dry and hard, it's a gonner, but if the abdomen stil flexes then there's hope!
I like this. I always liked nature. one time i messed with a butterfly when it was coming out of its cacoon and it fell to the ground and later on that afternoon I went into the back yard and saw it crawling around in the grass with crippled wings never able to fly in its short life. I have never forgivin myself for that and would never mess with another one ever.
Butterflies frequently fall (all by themselves) while expanding their wings. If they can't climb back into a hanging position to finish, then they will end up like you described. Others fail to expand their wings anyway, for no apparent reason - so don't be too hard on yourself! :) They are frequently eaten by predators and are totally vulnerable until they can fly. It's amazing that enough of them survive to keep the species going!
Yes - I collected the caterpillars, eggs, or got the butterflies/moths to lay the eggs, and then raised them myself. It's very interesting if you like biology-type stuff. :)
Some are released back into nature, and others are placed into a large screened cage with other to mate and start a new brood, especially if I missed filming a part of the life cycle and need to try again!

I just caught one from my garden, they seem to like my zinnia flowers, my zinnias are about four feet high. I love the silver it has

They're pretty cool bugs. If you have some Passionvine around, you can easily find the caterpillars of this species, too, and rear some. :-)
