  • oldest trick in the book - scare tactics

what would happen to the robber if he just ditched the laptop somewhere ....im guessing nothing

this lecturer should be fined for not being responsible with "precious data"

  • Awhile back I read that this professor did indeed get his computer stolen, but this whole speech was a fabricated story and he never got it back lol.

  • Haha his laptop contains weird porn, that's why he is so hostile..

  • this video captured using said laptop . . .

  • Dammit, Cam... You just cost us two more championships.

  • He's just trolling.

  • I bet it was Cam Newton.

  • Seriously? a transponder on your laptop? How the fuck did you get a job at Berkeley?

  • Is this guy seriously giving this BS lecture to students from Berkeley? One of the most prestigious technical school? What a dick. He's acting like he's telling his grandmother that the monitor is a TV.

  • what an idiot

  • Trade secrets and other important documents on ur laptop, and ur too cheap to buy a kensigton lock and/or lojack. I think u should also be held accountable for that data if it's stolen.

  • BS list:

stealing a computer wont break windows activation

    Microsoft wont call you

laptops dont have transponders, they are not airplanes

some wireless access points do have logging, but only for mac addresses

you CANNOT tell if someone copied a file or files off your pc

btw I aint talking out my ass, I am a laptop tech

  • @RattlerX5150 I agree. He had me raising my eyebrow as well at the some of the things he said, but I applaud him on doing it all with a straight face. I certainly couldn't keep one while I was watching this.

  • the only thing i herd was 1000000 dollar data......."SOLD FOR 200 BUCKS!!!"

  • THE PERSON NEVER TURNED THE LAPTOP IN AND WAS NEVER CAUGHT LOOK UP THE PROFESSORS WIKIPEDIA - JASPER RINE

  • Comment removed

  • VERY INTERESTING BUT DID YOU HAVE TO COMMENT WITH CAPS LOCK ON?

  • woah mama! 007 ain't got nothing on this gangsta professor! lol, seriously, I know he just broke down and cried for the laptop to be return after this pathetic speech

  • What is really concerning is how this man would be so reckless to leave such records unguarded. I would never trust somebody like that with shit and how are we to know he himself didnt sell the information for profit and that this is all a show? Again, if all of this was soooooo valuable and sooooo important what in the hell would compell a seemingly intelligent man to leave it unattended? Anyone? I would sue - he should have shut his mouth but now he stands to be sued for negligence.

  • BLUFF

  • Translation: "Oh no, my laptop has been stolen and my vast collection of child porn will be discovered."

  • if the government could track this computer as he says, they would've had both the computer and thief long before this moron of a professor could tell an entire class full of people about the extremely sensitive information he has on the computer. And with his computer containing such sensitve information, bet your ass, that the government insisted that all his weekend plans be canceled until the computer was recovered. As a student I would want a refund on my tuition for being taught be him

  • Yeah. This guy's completely blowing smoke. If this computer handled data that sensitive he would have had his ass fired for allowing it to be stolen.

  • Because I back traced it!

  • I bet the thief is recording this with the stolen PC's webcam.

  • Ha! My Dad's bigger than your Dad speech from the Prof! Ha, useless whiney nerd-talk from a frustrated victim. Wah, wah, wah, man up. Although the thief is a dick, this useless speech is worse. Wipe the laptop, sell online, zero risk.

I hate thieves, I hate whiny bitches who think they have a "scary solution" that will fool people "stupider than them" even more. Elitist prick.

  • @rockyPants4000 Or just remove and throw away the HD. Standard proceedure for anyone with brains.

  • Did anyone ever notice it says Viagra on the board?

  • @Pharoah6905

maybe he was teaching a hard lesson

  • Cool story bro, thanks for the laptop.

  • Since when does microsoft call you?

  • what a retard who keeps that kind of data on a laptop thats no tethered down or better yet encrypted.

  • @qwertythecomputer The British Government.. MI5.. They've lost laptops and thumb drives with sensitive data on them which wasn't encrypted.

  • Good job professor! leave all kinds of unencrypted sensitive data on an unattended laptop. I would have fired you for this.

  • PISSED OFF,,, FOR GOOD REASON!

  • I think this is awesome. Youtubers just don't appreciate a righteous smackdown.

  • My laptop got stolen 2 weeks ago and they forgot to steal the charger with it lol

they unpluged the charger and just ran off with the computer? lol dumbass theifs

  • @MarvelousHipHop Hahahahahahahaha, you're foolish. Chargers are a dime a dozen.

  • Transponder data???

What is he talking about, NO LAPTOP I ever worked on has a transponder.

  • @RattlerX5150 If it was a laptop he was using for work it could potentially have something like this in it. We don't really know what kind of laptop was stolen. But if any of this was true he wouldn't be announcing it to the class. He was just trying to scare the kid obviously.

  • He gave the same speech when his eraser went missing the week before

  • Stupid asses, most bulk computers shipped to corporations have embedded chips in them that are 'transponders'. What would have been smart for prof to do are the following: 1) lock you laptop with a laptop lock; 2) put a BIOS password; 3) put a hdd password 4) use encryption ESPECIALLY if you have data as such as you are boasting.

  • rhine suckkksss

  • This guy sounds like a bunch of BS. I guess there is a lesson to this....

    1. steal it while no one is looking and there are no cameras.

    2. immediately remove the battery or any back-up power supply to prevent tracking.

    3. Move to an obscure location before turning it back on, and then know how to immediately remove the tracking

device... or even better, make yourself a closet sized Faraday cage to start up the laptop in so it will be impossible to track while your in the cage.

  • @skyflyer900 Considering the time being 2006, unless he had some specific software on the thing, there's no real tracking he could do. The best he could have done was know when it was connected to the campus network. Not the location, though. Also, while he likely would place a transponder in such an important laptop, but rather than a means of locations, I think it's more identification. Due to range and junk.

  • I am Spartacus!

  • wtf man thief's don't know how to steel laptops

  • i cant believe this guy. he wanted to ask for his computer back without crying. yeah its on ebay right now. and what the fuk is a transponder? i thought that was only on star trek. i found a laptop once. i kept it. couldnt break it so i took it apart and kept the cpu, memory card, and hard drive. lol

  • That laptop is so on ebay haha. The guy who stole it was probably sitting in that class watching porn on it while the professor was giving his bs speil.

  • his diot actually teaches college? Has he even USED Windows? Where's my transponder??

  • this is an awesome video, im shitting a brick and i havent even been near that laptop, i actually feel a tiny bit guilty hahaha

  • THE prof was totally lying, The second hes like bring the laptop to me and that im the only one who can save you, ITS pretty ovious that he hasnt tracked him and just wants the laptop beack

secondly if the data was that important in which i mean the federal governemtn was involved they would have already been at his door the second they herd what happened.

  • lol, i'll tell you what. i'm no thief, but, if i didn't know a thing about computers, and i'd stolen that laptop, i'd be freaking out.

give that teacher some credit. it was a great performance. he should have won an ocar for that.

  • I just really have to interject something here and I agree with the former poster in a lot of ways:

    1. The transponder and wireless signal places the laptop at certain places on the campus, as long as the MAC-adress hasn't been changed you could prove where the LAPTOP was, but not neccessarily the person.

    2. Eye witnesses are only as good as their word, any defense attourney will tear that one apart.

    3. A security camera could have gotten him, but else: just jack the transponder+wifi and done.

  • You're right. I thought about the camera thing as well. But on the other hand, why would the guy tell that to everybody if he knows, what the thief looks like and that he is on the campus. He's talking about millions of dollars. Doesn't seem a very clever strategy to me. If it were my laptop and my millions of dollars involved I'd rather try to find him on my owm or have people do it instead of letting him know what I know and by that giving him the chance to get away (if he isn't already).

  • Probably scare tactics, it would probably work on someone who is paranoid or similar.

And why the hell wouldn't the professor encrypt the data that was so important? That's a big mistake on the professors part because yes, laptop thefts do happen very often.

  • Still sounds risky to me. The guy wasn't scared from stealing the laptop in the first place... and using it on the campus.

Agreed with the encryption thing. A professor should know better!

  • lot of things that arent true.

1, washington doesnt give a crap about a stolen laptop. 2 you cant track a laptop by it being turned on. only by the ip address that can be changed. and why the hell would you have bussness info on your personal data (since its a million dollar bullshit) this guy just wanted his laptop back.

to be real, you can take it down to mexico and get everything swapped and come back with a new laptop and 50 gigs of porn lol.

  • cool, i hope they find the lil punk, i had my ipod touch 16gb stolen and im soooooo pissed, god i hate thieves.

  • Isn't Berkeley supposed to have the best and brightest (students and professors)?

    Losers.

  • this fag was worried someone might see his kiddie porn ,thats all

  • naaah he just wanted his pacman back. maybe kid ttraded these data 4 100mln dollars ;]

  • let me add some facts about this, there was no tracking device in the laptop. microsoft was not intrested in why windows was being activated again (since the laptop had already been wiped and windows reinstalled) also the laptop was put up on ebay within a few hours of being stolen and did end up being found in possession of the new owner that bought it. ALSO there was no intresting data according to police records, this professor just wanted to scare the kid.

  • still one could track the laptop on the nternet ;ater even with new windows

  • LOL! The laptop was never even returned. So "ironically" this dickhead was screwed over.

  • realy ? did they catch him /?

  • uuuu he said what this computer worth. Now nobody will return this shit.

  • what a dumb poo hole of a teacher. I doubt this happened

  • damn i would just take the hard drive out and smash it and get another drive lol

  • MAC address on the computer would be the same. ;)

  • oh yea i forgot about that lol

  • u can spoof the mac address :P

  • What an asshole!

  • Did they ever find out what happened?

  • This guy's such a liar. If half what he's saying is true HE would be in trouble for letting the laptop get stolen. He would have been better off saying "i saw you but turn yourself in and i'll go easy on you. Such a dickhead.

  • yeah he would encrypt the data

  • that is not the way to get a stolen computer back! Simply look on craigslist!

  • Hey Jasper you laptop plays Crysis pretty good and with the data i sold to the chinese i bought a sweet 80" Plasma

ha ha ha aha aha ha ha ha

  • Whats the correct pronunciation of DATA?

    Date-a

    or

    Dat-a

  • Dat-a

  • Dat-a

  • Deataeaaaaa

  • For a laptop, all of these people are interested??? Fucking liar.

  • lexyota it had a bunch of data... hundreds of thousands of dollars of data...

  • My laptop was so very important Microsoft calls me everytime i turn it on. Jasper D. Rine "The D stands for Dickhead"

  • No it was never found. Jasper Rine. Just do a search on him Wikipedia, He is a fuckhead from what i read.

  • .

    Was it ever found?

    .

  • One word: BLUFFING

Five words: EVER HEARD OF A PASSWORD?

  • He's full of shit, if this was so important and they knew who did and could track the unit they would of nailed the thief without the theatrics

  • the laptop wasn't returned

  • He's got porn on there, gay porn.

  • @thefuzzyhulk i'm afraid it might be a little more serious than that... it's gotta be child porn.

  • I also love how he is such a funking sexist that he just assumes it was a "young man" who stole the damn thing.

He probably left it on the roof of his car and drove off!

  • If you remember, Rine was the man credited with denying Ignacio Chapela tenure two years ago. Rine, the sole biologist on the tenure committee, had a flagrant conflict of interest because he was at the same time both a servant of the university and the CEO of a private biotech firm who should have recused himself from the tenure case of a colleague who had become a public figure (not only by discovering the transgenic contamination of the landraces of Mexican maize but)...cont.

  • ...by contesting the propriety of the privatization of public research at UC - specifically the notorious contract between the College of Natural Resources and the Novartis Corporation, to which Jasper Rine was party.

(For those that don't know, this slimy unethical, lying, ridiculous fruitcake Professor's name is Jasper Rine and he gives Berkeley a bad name.

  • You can't give Berkeley a bad name...that's like saying you can make dirt dirty. Berkeley, both the city and the university, are as low as you can go. It is more accurate to say that this guy fits right in at Berkeley where he is among his peer group of "slimy, unethical, lying, ridiculous fruitcake" professors.

  • Actually, Berkeley has some of the most brilliant professors teaching today. For the most part they are ethical. That is why Rine doesn't fit in. He's a tool for corporate interests. Do some real research before relying on the information they tell you at your local Mega-Church.

  • Brilliant doesn't mean they aren't nutty. Rine fits in just fine like all the other tools in Berkeley. Never attended a mega-church in my life...nice stereotyping though. Pull your slip down, your hypocrisy is showing.

  • Ha ha, I pegged it!

  • still though, daz, your retarted haterplayerism shows that youre probably quite bitter at getting your ass chomped on a grade curve or something.

and comparing berkeley to dirt? i love that, because it's grimy, gritty, useful...beautiful, really. soft kids from butfuck-nowhere wont understand though

  • If the prof actually had info of who stole the laptop, they'd have already nabbed the kid, and he wouldn't be spouting about what could happen etc. If anything, the prof is only advertizing his incompetence at handling sensitive information and should have whatever security clearances he has removed.

  • None too smooth, prof. Next time leave your important IPO work at home, and don't lecture your students on your own complete idiocy. He talked a good schpiel though I wouldn't trust him to take care of a bar of old soap.

  • I cannot believe how corrupt the culture is getting, which only proves the prophecy about the coming apostasy to be true in Second Thessolonians (New Testament). This theft culture is simply taken for granted with little shock by the younger generations.... If they only knew what's coming.

  • right, some 2nd year punk steals a laptop and now Berkeley is condemned to hell.

don't drag in this culture war crap in here. Leave God out of this please.

  • What god?

  • @Acronym77 ONE series of events EQUALS the cause for ONE theoretical outcome, with no analysis or research?

Do you even understand what the concept of education is?

  • LOL...my friend stole a laptop in the school too...

  • He must thinks everyone is stupid!

    Real story here copy link-theinquirerDOTnetarticle=22762

  • yeah as is obvious from the video, this guy was trying to scare a student into coughing it up ... this happened in 2005, and according to this link: theinquirer-net(slash)?article=22762, he made almost all of this crap up ... as it turns out, they found the laptop, stolen by some woman and sold to an auctioneer in san fran ... nice try, though

  • even if the laptop had a password on it the data could still easily be retreived by just taking out the hdd and plugging it into an IDE to USB convertor.

funny thing is I bet the thief didn't even go to class that day. this professor makes Berkley look really bad....obviously he doesn't know shit about computers. "wireless transponder"...

    ROFLCOPTERZ

  • I mean encryption, not having a Windows password. There two different things. If I give you a file encrypted in AES with a 20 character password, it's gonna be hard as hell to get the data. You can also add a "key" file to make it harder - good as erased.

  • sounds like a pathetic threat from a desperate man trying to keep himself out of trouble for not securing his laptop

  • Any competent IT department would have had the entire Harddrive encrypted (or at least the important files) so they are as good as deleted. There would have also been a backup of the important files....if all was true, the prof. who owned the notebook would be liable for negligence - and his incompetence would also show.

  • I know that my university has something like a tracking system on their PC's and laptops for checkout in the library to prevent these things. However, keeping personal files with these other files that are supposedly worth $100 million is highly unlikely. Oh well, at least he got his machine back, right? lol

  • $100,000,000 file from one of the largest companys on the PLANET!! OOOOO...This guy must think everyone is stupid! If I was the guy who took the LT I'd LOL!

  • Transponder? parcial photo? 2 eyewitnesses? If so,why not just get the guy who took the lap top insted of a long winded speech? YEAH RIGHT!! Friggin Arrogant Ass!

  • That's the bad man that took pictures of my privates !

  • Stop calling me a thief !!

    I'm a porn fan....

  • If i was the theif i would mail that professor a vid of his laptop playing the noob song

  • Poor guy is seriously concerned about his pr0n collection

  • lol

  • Windows takes a lot longer than fifteen minutes to install!

  • The teach is the one in trouble. I'm wondering why this video was posted.

  • nice bluff, bullshit they can track a general wireless card so easily.. windows is too fucking retarded to do that

  • A partial image and 2 eye witnesses.. if you even had those.. you could point that person out easily.. now go shove those lies up your ass hahahaha

  • Transponder. Bullshit!!! Tracked by his nuts.

  • Guys, Shuki Alburati with the computer with over 100,000 students' information and this stolen laptop are 2 different things. The S.Alburati Laptop was recovered, but this one was not.

  • Erhmm

#1: Why the fuck would you install the same version of windows on the same computer ?? second, hes a professor at UCB, I doubt he had the time...

#2: Even if its true redmond virginia wouldnt cooperate with the prof..

#3 Young boy ? Statistically ...young boys commit more crimes.

#4 100$ million ? trade secrets? The prof is a dumbass to carry around that kind of data to being with.Transponder? My ass.

BLUFF. But gotta give it to him, hes a good bluff for a n00b th3if.

  • shubuki nuki? haha... The only Middle Easterners I know who steal are Communist... I guess he goes to the right college

  • that guy is a wanker. i hope he losses his job with all these huge company for putting their files and security at risk

  • kiddie porn

  • Jasper Rine is far from being an idiot. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. The video is funny, though.

  • Shuki Alburati was charged with buying a stolen computer, not stealing it. This prof was bluffing, he had no partial image and no witnesses. His professionalism was drawn into question and he laid down this stupid rant because of consequences coming his way... which actually was about possible identity theft of approx. 100,000 students on the computer. It was taken off and had the OS wiped clean without incident, much to this morons relief.

  • how he did put a pass word on the computer lmao

  • it was me

  • If i were the Prof, being a Prof of Genetics, Id say, whoever uses or touches this computer would experience shrinkage of its genitals and would simply fall off. Ironically I'm the only peron on the PLanet that can reverse the effect if you give me back the infected laptop.

  • Shuki Alburati, a San Francisco State student, has been arrested in connection with the laptop which was stolen from U.C. Berkeley earlier this spring. He in turn had purchased it from the person believed to be the original thief, and had attempted to fence it on eBay.

  • Just read updates on this story. apparently they apprehended this sf freshman for selling the computer on E-bay. The student's name is Shuki Alburati

  • and to think this GUY teaches at Berkeley. 1. Stupidity for leaving the laptop unsecured. 2. Stupidity for not putting a password on your laptop. 3. Stupidity for underestimating your students

  • Another OLD GEEZER trying to put fear into the students. SO friggin arrogant. He must have some kiddie porn in his hard drive.

  • hahahahaha...what a loser..."partial image of this person?" hahahah what a load of crap..

  • that man sounds like fuckin daffy duck

  • CHECK THIS OUT:

    http://www.techweight.com

  • it was me

  • loool! yea and aliens might eat his mom if he doesn't return the laptop? some bullsheet! This teacher just gave the thief another laugh! Well done!

  • i wish i had this guys laptop man!i will sell it to some hachers i know and they will sell the info too?

  • wat a load of bull crap... LMAO... if hes gonna lie he could of at least said something more realistic like, maybe that he had trakion on his computer, and that he would find the person... more realistically... not with "TOP SECRET GOVERNMENT SATELITE BS"... LOL

  • lol yup full of shit!

  • This was a good net fad for a while.

  • THAT GUYS WASTING BREATH ! FUKIN BULLSHIT...

  • I still would have been freaking scared.

  • Video appears to be a total crock to me, probably never found the guy or the laptop. Of course, they probably knew they would never find the person, and their only hope was to scare the person into confessing before they had a chance to sell the laptop.

  • Well of course it is a bluff :) Check wikipedia for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jasper_Rine
