12yrs ago I was working as a building contractor out in Brazil. One day the site foreman offered us some triple-pay overtime on a “confidential govt project”.
To my horror, this turned out to be driving an excavator (UNANNOUNCED) through a fully-occupied slum to ‘clear the human filth’. I was told I’d never work in the country again if I refused! Men, women & kids scrambled their few possessions as I mowed down their homes- I kept my eyes CLOSED, knowing injury & death may have resulted.

@Thefight2012 you should read more notices about Brazil today. Our HDI is better, our economy is already the 8º-7º of the world, and it will the 4th in next years. Our education is better. We still have problems with slums but the UPPs ("Unidades de Policia Pacificadora") are pacifying them, the poverty is much lower . There is still a lot of work to do, but the things in 2011 are much much better than it was in 2003. I am really sure.The ex-president Lula made a great government.

This problem of the traffic and slums was a consequency of the bad brazilian urbanization in the begining of 20th century.the black people was poor and they dont have options where to live so they built this s slums guetto in the "foot of the mountains"so this grew without future consequencies ,and this s why we see this stuffs.
I have spent considerable time in Rio de Janeiro and I was able to walk the streets with little worry of violence and theft. I was very comfortable being there. Even in the favelas.

@Thefight2012 you should read more notices about Brazil today. Our HDI is better, our economy is already the 8º-7º of the world, and it will the 4th in next years. Our education is better. We still have problems with slums but the UPPs ("Unidades de Policia Pacificadora") are pacifying them, the poverty is much lower . There is still a lot of work to do, but the things in 2011 are much much better than it was in 2003. I am really sure.The ex-president Lula made a great government.

This problem of the traffic and slums was a consequency of the bad brazilian urbanization in the begining of 20th century.the black people was poor and they dont have options where to live so they built this s slums guetto in the "foot of the mountains"so this grew without future consequencies ,and this s why we see this stuffs.

I have spent considerable time in Rio de Janeiro and I was able to walk the streets with little worry of violence and theft. I was very comfortable being there. Even in the favelas.
