There is xyb, left trigger(xyb), and you can assign a switch weapon set to any of those giving you a total of 10 talents macroed.

If you mean the rings around the portrait, it's the party HP and Mana/Stamina bars.

As of the rings around the actually characters, I haven't really noticed them before. My guess is that they are there to make it easy to distinguish friend from foe.

For optimal control of the combat, you will use a lot of pausing to issue different actions for your party. But it isnt turn based.
