Old Japanese say to children, that the god(Spirit might be a better translation) of toilet is the most noble, responsible and modest one around.Since among all gods he/she was the only one who volunteered to be in charge of its maintenance even though it's an important symbol of household health. Also, one's hospitality can be measured by how clean and comfortable it, where you expose your privacy, is kept. The girl had to be taught if she had a dream to be a good housewife so her grandma did it.
Very touching + true lyrics on how the advice by our (grand)parents that we followed during childhood, then we tell them to stop their nagging during our rebellious phase, but how when one matured into a fine adult, we found ourselves without even realizing it doing those advices by our parents that nagged us so much, and how we are grateful for such a good upbringing they've given us~ Thank you mom & dad!!
i don't really get it when first time i read the translation but after i read your description...i think this song is really meaningful, haha. Good song plus beautiful voice of Kana Uemura, rabu rabu this song <3
My Obahchan was the same as this woman, although I didn't have to clean the bathroom, she encouraged me. I left Japan when I was 7 years old and never saw her again. I cried and sent the link to my okasan who is also an Obahchan now. She wrote back to say that I kept a clean bathroom.lol.
This is one of the saddest song I have ever heard. Your message comes through, do not allow others to tell you anything different. I was raised by a foreign mother and feelings and thoughts do come through if one is attempting to convey the truth of an experience. This is a universal story of family, tradition, pain and allowances. That the myth is one of a toilet goddess is extremely interesting. Keeping clean the place where the waste of our bodies is put. Your honesty and candor refreshing.
Very interesting video. I like the "folk" nature of the music and the voice is very pleasing to the ear. The music seems very well produced and recorded. The message is what struck me. I work in a factory and a service cleans the restrooms, and not very well. One day a lady of Korean descent began and literally attacked it. Within days it was fantastic and almost a pleasure to use. I complimented her to her supervisors and she was moved to a different location. We are back to substandard.
The vvoice is beautiful and so is the music. The story is also beautiful. The toilet is just a representation of an idea. I would like to hear more of this singer. I spent some time in
Japan while I was in the Navy and came to the conclusion that the Japanese are very sentimental when it comes to family; we could learn from them in this respect.
I think this is a rather nice and poignant piece of music. I don't find it funny at all. What I think is lost in translation (to some extent) is how the word toilet is viewed. I think (if I understand correctly - since this is how we speak in my native language) the word toilet is used to describe the entire room and not just the device itself. In any event, what her grandmother said is quite true, leave your bathroom untended and you will contract all kinds of diseases etc.
@Glasrane Thank you for your comment. I do agree that a lot is lost in translation. In Japan, cleaning the bathroom is a method of discipline, to learn humbleness. Apparently not till long ago, parents made their children clean the bathrooms, just like this video, and obviously it was one chore most kids hated. In some schools, students are still required to clean the bathrooms. The song is about what any child and parent go through. I'm glad you appreciate the song.

XD LOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL OMFG Srry I can't help laughing at the lyrics......Not that its wrong or anything its just weird lyrics for a song......like isn't the lyrics to the song something that should be personal to the lady singing this song?
@ScarletWingz I'm sorry your comprehension is not capable to get past the word toilet, and the lyrics. I would like to help you by explaining what she actually is saying, one by one, but on second thought I don't have confidence in making already very simple lyrics any simpler, so please ask one of your older relatives to explain the meaning on the song to you.
@ScarletWingz You are a dumbass!! Lyrics to songs are for the most part persomal to the person singing it or they written to so that they may have a personal connection to the audience. It is sad that you do not understand that connection. I hope you never loose anyone close too you and God forbid if you do I hope that you do not have any regrets and that you learned all you could from them. This is what this song is about.
@ScarletWingz Isn't the lyrics personal to the lady singing the song? She's reminiscing about the past when she lived with her grandmother. About how she grew up as she gradually grew father away from her grandmother. When her grandmother grew ill and passes away, she regrets it. And she remembers her grandmother sayings about a goddess in the bathroom. Even though her grandmother has passed away, she still continues to clean the bathroom in honor of her grandmother. It's like an old tradition.
Now we know just how different the Japanese are from us.... The song sounds lovely if you don't know what most of the words mean - actually, it was more like a novella - I thought it would never end!!
westernized cultures are the reason why we eastern people start to be impolite, rude and also start to forget our parents, grandparents, family & relatives, and even our religious behavior. The older we'll be, the more we'll forget our big family and the warmth of being with our big family. That's why parents forbid me to study abroad especially western countries..
I'm 19 and my grandmother was the one who raised me cause my parents were poor and had to work all day. She stays with my family now and sometimes she get one my nerves and make me so angry that i feel like asking her to leave the house. This song made me grateful that grandma is still alive and well.i really love my grandma and i'll cherish every moment i have left with her.

Very nice song w/ touching lyrics and melody.
It's also a metaphor of what we see in real life too, great depiction and moral behind this :)

I'd also add "and depressing" but most country music is depressing so I suppose it fits in perfectly there.
