  • can i know how much for this op please. i am from thailand, but thinking to have this op in the uk. thanks peoples and wish you a good luck.

  • I had this surgery on August 9, 2011 and by now, I have only 2 days post-op. !

  • thanks alot

  • very nice clear video, well done

  • surgeons are quite amazing. i have high amounts of respect for these men and women who devote their lives to these practices.

  • I had this operation done twice. I have a conductive hearing loss in my right ear. The first one failed after a while, and the second one didn't work...until one day recently, when the hearing in my right ear came back! Hmmm. I wonder what happened?

  • wooh! now i know how they do the surgical procedure its my report actually...wew!thanks!

  • CONGRATS!!! GREAT SURGICAL SKILLS and INGENIOUS METHOD! Never imagined of replacing such small bones with a protetical one and ever hear again

  • I had my right ear stapedectomy back in December 2009. It was the best decision that i ever made. Before the surgery, my hearing range in my right ear was a 65 db, which is moderately severe hearing. Two months after the surgery, they ran another test, and it went from a 65 to a 24 db, which is in the normal hearing range!! I recently had my left ear done last Thursday.

  • Im getting this surgery in feb and em really scared. my mom had it dont when she was my age and she was sick for two weeks and couldnt walk for about a week. did any of you have problems walking?

  • @1992leclerc

I had this surgery in march 2008, it did not work. When i am walking and a try to see aroud me while walking i lose control and tend to move to left.

  • @1992leclerc They put a pain patch behind my ear after the surgery. After I took it off, every once in a while I would get dizzy, but not that bad. It's nothing to be scared of, and the side effects are normal. I try not to move around too much; which is why I took two weeks off of leave from my job just to be sure. I'm so glad that i had it done. Everything's loud and clear.

  • fantastic surgeon and fantastic surgery. Hope the result is favourable with this total stapedectomy

  • THAAT FOOT PLATE CAME OUT IN TOTO !!!

  • Well a surgeon did two of those in my ears , and that didn't seam to me barbaric. As a matter of fact I was sleeping like a baby. And now I hear perfectly :)

  • @nuno2maz

I'm getting this procedure done tomorrow, how did the post op go?

  • dont matter to be worried about that. the post op. was a little annoying 'cos the tympan had to heal, and i had itch. The only problem is that you cannot fly for a little while and you have avoid crowded places. You loss the capability of flavour things for a while also. It's worthwhile though...

  • Thanks for the info. I also have to work the next day (nothing strenuous), do you think it would be a problem?

  • no, you can handle it fine. just try not to move too much and be in quiet environments

  • good luck anyway and be positive because it works really fine :)

  • I had that surgery in march. It did not work due a deformation. but it' still operable. i will do it here in the US this time.

  • This procedure seems rather barbaric, especially seeing as the middle/inner ear is very sensitive.

  • Im not a doctor, i dont know nothing about medicine. I come here just traveling for youtube videos.

But, all i can do is say GOOD LUCK!!

Good luck! to all people, also patients and doctors. I hope all your become fine ^- ^

  • Excuse my ignorance but why do a stapedotomy and then remove the entire footplate with downfracture? Also, why not drill the stapedotomy?

  • oh my god! im getting that operation done this year. The biggest worry I have is that god damn nerve there. If thats zapped in half, half my face will be paralysed. I've been reading everyones comments and im not looking forward to the vertigo part or the nausea :/ but hopefully it will be worth it. Im also kinda of worried that noises will be overwhelming when I can hear again. Do ppl adjust well?

  • no, the nerve you see there is the flavour nerve. It only paralizes the capability of flavouring for 2 weeks. Then, all becomes ok. Don't be afraid

  • I've been watching this video for such a long time, i've been always expecting the fact that, someday i was gonna have it! and it's become true, tomorrow WEDNESDAY 4TH MARCH 2009, i'm gonna have it. however, im not nervous but enthusiastic, im looking forward to having success, it will be!! i have no doubt of it !!!

  • hope it all went well!

  • it's done now, bad news, the doctor found a mass of bones, not well defined bones, so he was unable to take it off and put the protesis in, ill talk to him next week !

  • oh no :( so he didnt do anything?

  • no, He didn't, as i said before, he found a mass of bones, nothing separated, so he was not able to take the piece off. Thus, it was not posible to do something that will improve my earing ability, i'll talk to my Dr. next week( a week after the surgery), i dont know, im confused, im concerned about my right ear(good one) , if it gets the same deformation, i will be deaf of both ears. i dont want it obviouly!!

  • sorry to hear about that :( hope a solution is found for you and if not, hope your right ear holds out :) looks like a scary operation. May i ask what exactly needs to happen for this operation to be needed? and what happened to your ear?

  • im about to get this surgery done on both of my ears and its caused by Otosclerosis pray for me every one.

  • Dont worry i will pray for you, im gona have this surgery in may 2010 both ears God is the greatest healer and He has plans for you.

  • Very good video. How to get such clarity in you tube videos?

    Narayana

  • Thanks a lot for you good words.

  • que pasa

  • I had a stapedectomy done about 10 years ago. It worked very well, restoring my ability to hear with my right ear. However, my hearing in that ear recently returned to pre-surgery levels. My ENT doctor says that it's likely that the prosthesis has fallen off and I'll need to have it replaced. Just something to keep in mind for those of you who are looking into having this surgery for the first time.

  • did you have side effects from the procedure?

  • i did two of those, both ears. 7 years ago. it never happened to me anything like that. I'm really sorry that happened to you :(

  • Eww.

  • I had this surgery in my left ear in 2005 but unfortunately it didn't work.. it just improved hearing by less than 10% so I am going for another one in same ear next week... I am really scared !!! For second time there will more risk as I was told by my doctor.. anyone has an advice for me ?

  • good luck. have faith. i wish for the best.

  • I was going to have a stapedectomy on my left ear. The doctor thought by doing so, my hearing would be improved. He DID warn me, that worst-case-scenario, I would lose ALL of my hearing in that ear. I wanted to take the risk, to chance it being better. When the doctor went in, however, he found the stapes wasn't "frozen" enough to take the risk, so he left it. He DID strengthen the eardrum; which didn't help much for ME to notice, but at LEAST I still have hearing in that ear.

  • its depend from the doctor the decision. i think that the surgeon must be prepare for every scenario...

  • Oh, YES! I agree with this. If the surgeon didn't think it was frozen enough to risk my hearing, I'mGLAD he decided not to do it!

  • did the surgons put u to sleep? or something? did it hurt after? tell me everything PLEASE!

  • Hi 123, I had this done 4 weeks ago. Yes you get put to sleep & when I woke up the sorest part of me was my hand where they removed veins for grafting inside my ear. I was however full of drugs for the pain & nausea. The vertigo that I had was very alarming when it first occurred so be aware it will come. Feels like your bed drops from under you etc. Still healing & will keep you up to date on my progress. Best of luck, Liz x

  • that most have hurt, but i'm not getting the surgery, just that my right ear it feel like there is somthing pushed up there, and whenever i used to yawn it would pop and hurt A LOT, but it doesn't pop any more when i yawn so thats good... but it still feels like somthing is pushed up m right ear. but it also because i have a cold, and i even asked a lot of people if there ears pop when they have a cold and they were like yeah they always do that, i hope u feel better :)

  • Liz-

How are you feeling now? Was the procedure worth having? How bad was your hearing prior to the procedure?

  • Vertigo is one of the worst experiences I've ever had! Total loss of control of your body and your surrondings, there is no up or down, absolutely no sense of direction. Horrible. But, it is worth it and in my experience it passes after a couple of days.

  • Yes sure... he asked me wether to use local or general anasthesia (Maybe i spelled it wrong).. I chose general one to avoid any diziness or movement during the surgery as I was really scared this time. Anyway... there is no pain at all after the surgery (I had the surgery twice and believe me no pain). Just much diziness that has gone after 4 or 5 days. I still believe that pressure or something heavy behind my eardrup but this feeling also takes few weeks then it goes

  • It is amazing what medical science can do!!! I had a left stapedectomy last year and just a week ago had it for the right ear. I was very scared but it has been worth it. My hearing on the left ear has reestablished almost to normal levels and I hope I will have similar results for the right one. Vertigo, nausea, vomiting and pain have been worth it. It is a delicate procedure and there are risks... but it is better than being deaf.

  • how bad was your hearing when you did it? How long did the Vertigo and nausea last?

  • you can do this operation without vertigo and nausea. it is not necessary the have this defects. its up to surgical method and the capability of surgeon.

  • is this the surgery to take away otoesclerosis?

  • it does not take the otoesclerosis away, i just replaces the damage bones because of the esclerosis.

i;ll get one, i am half deaf ( and learning english, what a mess..... )

  • what is this piston

  • nice video, thnx.

this type of classic stapedectomy is not done any longer. its very risky, as many patients got permanent hearing loss.

  • you cannot every time remove a small piece of the footplate. so you must know haw to deel with this situation. as you can notice the piston is not alone. this is a strong secure not to have side effects.

  • i feel nervous of this vedio thank you for sharing ive done ear oparation 3 months ago here in denmark thanks you for uploading its very strange

  • nice video tnx for sharing is it under general or local anesthesia, what do u use for general anesthesia

  • the surgery take place under local anesthesia

  • where are you from?

i'm going to be operated soon, it scares me but if i dont take any risk, ill be deah all my life. so i think its worth it.

  • very nice its robinson piston

  • This is a Shea piston

  • The video shows a nice example of stapedectomy a surgical intervention to treat Otosclerosis. Unfortunately this surgery is out of date an today myself an the vast majority of ENT surgeons prefers a less invasive type of surgery that is called Stapedotomy in wich the footplat of stapes is not removed but a small hole is made on it and the prosthesis inserted in the hole. In this surgery the patients does not experience postoperative vertigo as is the rule in the old surgery shown in this video.

  • Im also confused, what approach is he taking? Is he going in through the ear canal? and what does he start tugging on at around 1:40? looks like the facial nerve but surely not.

  • the operation is made through an Hermann incision (through the ear canal). The neural structure at at 1:40 is the Chorda tympani.

  • i'm confused. what is he/she doing? it looks like the tympanic membrain was already torn and then he/she tore it more and whats all that white stuff behind it, and why is he/she digging around at that fasai. or how ever you spell it. i'm confused. is there any chance that you would repost with comentary?

  • This is a classical stapedectomy where the stapes is replaced by the piston. The piston is dressed with fascia for securing the labyrinth.

  • surgeon Dr. Bliouras Konstantin
