@garyc2 To each his own. I think they sound great, and as a matter of fact, I have other players talk about how good my '56 sounds when they hear it. Even Dan Erlwine says he thinks his original '56 is the best sounding guitar he owns.
I've never heard anyone refer to a Dano as "muddy," thin maybe but if you get a muddy sound out of one, it would be best to get your amp checked out.
@garyc2 It's such a different guitar from an SG400; night and day really. I have an original Les Paul SG which used to be my main guitar but now only play it every so often and never play it out. Of course the SG is a much better built guitar to say the least, but I still prefer playing a Dano. :-)
You can always find less expensive guitars, but they won't sound like a Danelectro. Seemed like $230 was a steal.
I dissagree. Prefer ma sg apart from the it being slightly unbalanced,
I prefer that kinna sound, Not keen on the dano sound. but I guess it's prefrence. Although I do think it suited the songs jimmy page used them for and I agree that the sound is unique.
@garyc2 Who would be stupid enough to use a metal-- or even aluminum-- nut? Um, I dunno--- how about a little company like Gretsch? Pretty reasonable guitars--- to say the least.
to each his own sure...but high end fenders have lsr roller nuts which are metal AND...metal FRETS and METAL nut! almost logical huh? sounds less stupid, huh? :P
Ok I take back what I said about the nut. I think they have there use but I think there over rated. They cost a couple of hundred pounds and I think u can get a better built guitar for the money.
@anotherheadlessdemo Are the guitars that Danelectro put out every year the same, other than each model's look? Because looks aren't really all that important to me, I've just kind of always had a soft spot for the 63's.
@deadredd10 I'm sure you could find a way to add 2 pots for extra tone and volume controls. I've never opened up the guitar to see how much room is underneath the pickguard. '63's always come with just two controls - kinda like a Tele.
You are a great guitarist. Excellent video! I love danelectros..I have never owned one, but whenever I see someone play one I always think about getting one.
Because this is a baritone. I was thinking of getting it for some deep sounding coz im in a few industrial bands. so im thinking now...is it for more bluesy stuff... Anyone wanna gimmie advice?
These were discontinued, but does anyone know where I could possibly get one? I may play punk music, but I've always had a soft spot for these Danelectro's, and I've always wanted one of these but I've just never gotten the guts up to buy one, so when I heard they had been discontinued, I was heartbroken.
my full equipment list a dc59 12 a dc2 2000 a 63, longhorn 3 , a dc56 an original dc59 and a silvertone that im yet to identify hodad amp, f &c pedal, pepperoni and cool cat, guess i just adore these guitars id just love a 67, that is a jizz inducer
@getupstairstobed ha! i have a dead on 67 (reissue of the hornet) and i love it with distortion almost as much as clean. ALMOST! haha depending on which song im playing, the dan does better with distortion than my Arbor Strat
I've never compared them to the originals. They are constructed with the same materials and in a similar fashion so I would guess they are close in some respects to the originals.
The originals were cheaply made (kind of the like the reissues).
Would you reccomend this for £150 new, im not sure how it will sound out of the box /: How does it cope with tube overdrive and does it go out of tune easily? thanks
With shipping, that's about what I paid for mine. It does overdrive really nicely although tuning can be tricky - the tuners are cheap and the nut is metal. I lubricate mine often which helps to keep it in tune.
I meant it was strange that it was a problem. I already have:
-Gibson Les Paul classic
-Fender strat USA
- Dano 59
-Schecter TSH-1
-...some weird acoustic baritone thing.
I think my next purchase has to be a proper acoustic, but I have no idea what to go for...maybe a Martin(of the not too expensive variety!) or a Taylor.
In many ways, it is great. The clean tone is absolutely beautiful, but I wish it could handle drive better. It is slightly worn though, I played some hard rockabilly on it and it's a bit scuffed, and the bridge pickup is faulty..the volume dips and rises. I bought the schecter because I thought it would solve my need for lipstick sounding pickups that can handle drive. But it's clean tones are underwhelming me now. I may ditch it for the dano 63...idol=Dex Romweber.
On this video they are a set of 10s . After I tune it and it "settles in" it does ok as far as staying in tune goes. If I wanted to do anything to it, I would replace the tuners though.
a few friends told me this wasn't good guitar, but the sound seems very clean, seems like a good guitar. not only would this work for blues, country, surf and even some rock, i also think if you slapped some distortion on this, it would work for punky sorta stuff. one question though, is it true this guitar has a body made out of plastic?
The body is made out of plywood and masonite - just like the originals were. I'm sure some would think this isn't a "good" guitar. It does have it's quirks and it is an inexpensive guitar but I really like it. It works well for blues, surf, country and yes, punk. Probably not a "good" guitar if you are a shredder or metal player.
To be honest, I'd like to have a couple more for different tunings. If something were to happen to this one, I'd buy another immediately!
I've used it for surf, blues and country. I think it's pretty versatile but if i was a shredder kind of player or into metal it wouldn't be appropriate.
i play with a 59 which has the exact same pick ups and when i looked up reviews before i got it everyone was like "you can only use it for one thing etc" but you can use this for anything that you would use a strat for which is about anything
its a shame you can only get these on ebay , why does danelectro do away with every good guitar when they bring a new onr out , good thing i got one for £129

Plus, I can`t be doing with something that weighs the same as a small steam engine (Les Paul..!! ) on my back at my age ! - this does it.
Rob - tuning has been a problem so I started lubricating the nut and it's been much better. I think the metal nut is problematic, but I also think they help give the guitar its tone.

@IamForeverChanging Yes, all Danelectros have truss rods, but, in order to adjust the truss rod, the neck needs to be unbolted from the body.

Listened to it again after a week or two.
And ur right muddy is the wrong word. There is somthin I don't like about the low end. Can't think of the word for it.
Still think they are over rated though. especially the price. My epiphone SG400 was a similar price.
Think u can get better guitars for the price, although if a song called for that sound I might use one, but would try n get it cheeper.

Dose he use a metal nut.
I might have to look into that.
I think he is a very tallented man but widdles too much. He ruined clasical tune such as adagio by Albinoni for me that way.
I think guitarist like Gary Moore could say more with one note than what he could say with 100.
garyc2 7 months ago
@garyc2 I can Only think he uses a brass nut for more sustain but I would have thought a metal nut would cause unwanted noise.
But it seem to be ok noise wise. Hmm interesting.
