@Dangay13 Well, if the Aaron Sorkin-penned film ever does get made, maybe she could. Even if Mirren can't sing well, she could probably do it. Alexis Smith wasn't a strong singer, but still pulled it off.
Also, if they keep taking their sweet time, perhaps by the time it gets made (if ever), Sorkin's Ex, Cheno, could be Sally...would be an interesting role for her.
@boynamedalexxx My vote would be for Glenn Close. She can sing and she has Phyllis' brittle sophisticaion. She also has the legs, I bet, for "Lucy and Jessie."
That's a great staging. I too prefer "Ah, But Underneath" to "The Story of Jessie and Lucy." That was one substitution Paper Mill made that I approve of.
Isn't there anyone with untold millions and taste who could make sure this Masterpiece is done justice as an intelligent movie? There surely is enough great talent out there !
So glad they used this alternate song...perfect for non-dancing Dee Hoty. She shines (not surprisingly), love her facial work. Very Gypsy Rose Lee. Thanks for sharing all these wonderful clips.
I actually love this performance!! WOW!!

It's called "Follies." It opened in 1971 on Broadway. This is from the 1998 Papermill Playhouse production.

Hoty's not my favorite Phyllis, not by a long shot. But this is very good.

I don't know if she can sing but I would loove to see Dame Helen Mirren tackle this on a movie version!!! Or maybe a London Revival...

Does anybody here have Vanessa (Ugly Betty) William's own version of this song, where she shows off her incredibly tanned body? Thanks.

Fabulous! I always wondered how this song was meant to be staged, and now I understand. Really enjoyed that, thanks for sharing.

This is wonderful. BUt did they also do Lucy and Jessie (which is what replaced it in the original production)?

According to Sondheim, a Movie-version is in development... Directed by Sam Mendes, I think...
But Sondheim said that like...two years ago, so I don't know if it still is in work
