It's just part of the paint tool. One of the selections paints over it's back, and any objects on it's back. So, the grass on its back turned black :P
I dont have a copy of it on my computer anymore so it'd be hard for me to tell you. It's uploaded on the sporepedia though, you can download that and take a look at how it's made I guess. :O

Well, I think he means texturewise. Spore has normalmapping. WoW doesn't.
