  • My grand father taught my sister and I this song in 1943. Just him myself and my sister on the front porch swing while grandma was cooking dinner. Also standing on the seat beside him in his 1941 Ford as he toured his Oklahoma farms. He looked a lot like you.

  • @osbornisland thank you very much - all the best :o) Alan

  • @osbornisland The first time I heard this song (or at least the begining) was Porky Pig singing it in "Robin Hood Daffy". And to my surprise, they didn't go witht he stuttering parody Porky usually speaks but did a beautiful haunting rendition of it...until Daffy interrupts.

  • if you could tab this song for me...that would be amazing.....fantastic job, i love this song....they don't write songs like this anymore

  • @blueprospect thanks for listening - sorry for late reply, but I've just returned from Greece! As for tabs - I can't follow them and so couldn't write them either! I played this in open G tuning - basically just picking out the melody, and putting in a D7 shape for the chord changes - hope this is some help to you - all the best :o) Alan

  • @nllleonard Thank you, Nancy - hope you had a nice weekend - all the best :o) Alan

  • I heard it was a Borders song. Up from round Carlisle. England/Scotland didn't mean to much to those for whom the border was the middle of their world.

  • well done. very authentic

  • Thank you for posting this; terrific guitar accompaniment, and soulful singing. Great rendition (of a song I was researching to learn).

  • it,s scottish

  • Loved the trad. way of playing this...the bit of harmonics were fantastic ! Will practice this now and hopefully you will give me marks out of ten P.S is It Scottish or English ?

  • Look forward to hearing your version. The Scots and the English both claim this song - I knew it from my father, and he was from Salford ! I'm pretty sure it isn't Welsh anyway. All the best :o) Alan

  • Thank you for sharing this. When I was a teen I had the priviledge of meeting John Jacob Niles' widow. She was very kind to me. This was a song John made popular in Kentucky.

  • This is my preferred tune for this song, and you sing and play it very well. Nice job!

  • This i remember we use to sing this at

school. Very nice going Alan 5***** mate

  • Thank you Colin - I think Raymondcrooke does the definitive version. All the best :-) Alan

  • simply outstanding!

  • An excellent version of this timeless classic - the first Child ballad I learnt when I was very young - from the singing of Burl Ives. I never tire of hearing it, especially when sung so well.

  • Never heard this before Alan. I used to think i had a pretty eclectic taste in music mate, that is until i stumbled across you lol. Another class tune and magic delivery, the best.

  • Thanks Jamie - all the best :-)Alan
