He would not perform unless the audience was quiet.. We waited for hours to hear him, always late, tthus the hush finger... and when he played, he broke away from the melody and improvised... you could hear a pin drop... all eyes on me.

Great music! RIP Miles. You music sure does provoke thought and feeling! I wish I knew of you when you were alive! But at-least your breath and soul lives on through your Smokey dimly lit music of a timeless era of no expiration.
This is a piece that must be *savored*! Just close your eyes and let your mind drift back to the Twenties, late at night in a smoke-filled club, just before lights out.
This is so cool, used to play this import from the KUSP 88.9 Santa Cruz library during my midnight to 5 show; imagined the random driver down I-5 hearing something like this through the fog. Miles blows.

1957 ! cette musique a plus d'un demi siècle ! et pour ceux qui comme moi était enfant ou adolescent et qui écoutèrent cette musique .. quelle révélation !
The photo of James Dean walking in the rain with his collar of his trench coat pulled up, hands in his pockets, while smoking a square on the streets of New York.

The solo gentleman on the balcony of his flat over looking the city he has taken over with his wit and charm. He has everything he wants, but nothing he needs. Thoughts of the one that got away flood his iron clad mind. The finest cigar money could by in his left hand, a gentleman's portions of bourbon in his right.
Takes me to a calm December night. Snowing hard outside, but still cozy inside. Sitting by the window gazing out at the moonlit falling snow. Seriously beautiful music.
songs like this make me wish I lived a few decades ago when the world hadn't been stripped of all its mystery yet. Times when music hadn't been raped by talentless golddiggers searching for fame and richess. When I listen to this song my soul fills up with gentle sadness, my mind goes blank, my eyes drift away, and I am completely at peace with myself.
You can't play that reading chords off a chart ... you got to be immersed and in the music to render that kind of lyrical line you've got to hear where it's going
Wow maaaan!!!! I get them goose bumps whenever hear a Mlile tune...especially this song here!! Its kinda bitter sweet, makes me sad one sec. then pleasantly happy...its comforting for the soul..Miles rocks or blows, no pun intended! lmao
Wow! What an incredible song this is! So hauntingly beautiful! Here's what I just had in mind! Imagine with me for a moment Miles Davis...the man and his music! Now, imagine for a moment that you can see either Laurence Fishburne or Samuel L. Jackson playing the role of this musical genious! Think for a moment how awesome that would be! :)
@justhots , right! Best mood song ever! "Jazz Tracks" is the ultimate in in beautiful moody jazz like only miles could do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
@Sorenconrad As far as the studio work that Miles did, it's so hard to decide what his best was. You're talking all modal era, but he had so much out there. I consider him the most influential jazz musician ever. INCREDIBLE trumpeter.
Oh,and one should keep in mind that Miles recorded this in one night, in Paris,...with Juliette Greco in the studio, and probably a bag of the best damn skag on the face of the earth
Jazz is considered by many to be America's only true original art form. That said, it is clear Jazz is a melding of everything American which is black, white, Indian. If you listen to Jazz you can hear heavy influences from ALL. You hear rhythm from African heritage which you don't hear in classical. You also hear Classical from European to name two. It all came together in America and melded into Jazz. Jazz is AMERICAN high culture and we all..black, white, indian contributed heavily.
melrose men........hahaa jazz music itself is african american created............ ... jazz was the hip hop music of its time !!.. i think you should listen to some of miles davis interviews and you will understand where im coming from.
Hey, I understand man. But you saying that it's black high culture, that's the part I disagree with. It's like saying the Milk made for cows is lemonade. Or that italian food is mexican food. I don't doubt that it's good, but it was made for a movie.
thumbs up if you're in a down blue situation.

@dstudentsuccess7 cool jazz or modal jazz
cool because of the time period it's from and the slow tempo (particularly in terms of the tempos of the bebop movement just prior)
modal because Miles and other jazz musicians of the time were using church modes, especially the mixolydian, dorian, and lydian, in their music.
If you know music, listen to the scale Miles uses to start off the piece. It's a concert Ab dorian b2
If you're looking for similar stuff, try Brubeck or Mingus for a start

I could be mistaken, but I think he plays
A Bb C D Eb F G A Bb A ....
(for trumpet , that is. trumpet is a transposing instrument)
isn't that the A locrian mode?
please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm still learning all this
