Slipknot wear mask for several reasons.

1st. When the group was formed they didn't want their identity to be known.

2nd. Each mask is unique and expressing parts of the characters of the members.

3rd. The masks are part of their style and scene act.. Take KISS for instance,they are the same.

4th. It's to show that it doesn't matter how you look or what person you are,as long as you do something unique and you have the gift to do something unique,you're good.

The reason Slipknot wear masks isn't because they're ugly (They don't give a fuck how they look) or because they are trying to hide their identity (They have done numerous interviews unmasked). They wear the masks because the masks represent who they are as people and projects the meanings of their songs. They are used to draw the attention away from them and towards the music. The masks are a visual representation of how the music makes the members feel. Hope that helped understand =]

It's a way to express how they feel and it's a way to wear the music. They made a 180 on that whole hot boy band crap that was going on. The masks are so hideous so people don't care about their faces and only pay attention to the music. They didn't want to be seen as individuals, so all you saw was a group of men in ugly masks, and all you were left with is the music to enjoy. They wanted to show that no matter how you look or who you were, you are welcome. It's what's inside that counts

I've herd it's suposed to act as a mirror, all the things that Slipknot hates about society is incorperated in everyone's mask. Clowns, for exemple, lol. Another theory is that they built a bomb i the garage while they were still a "garage Band" and it exploded and their faces got all messed up. i'd say there are a couple of reasons but the most obvious, i guess, would be for show. it's the same as with horror movies. a lot of people like to see the murderer in a mask. just adds more mystery. and also, with a mask, i think, you can be more like yourself. not being bothered what expression's on your face all the time. and seeing slipknot perform live, i'd say that expression would be total fucking exhaustion
