I never use the 3D metering modes for actual auto focus on my Nikon D90. As somebody else pointed out though it probably helps accurately expose? Not sure if an entirely different system in the Nikon cameras is used for that.
@HazyStudioVideos, @eggbertsmith This isn't showing anything that the camera shows you. It's simulating what the camera's computer is "looking" at to do exposure and focus in 3D matrix modes. The video and caption don't make that clear, unfortunately.
Nikon F5, D1, D1H, D1X, D2H, D2X and so on... although they use it for exposure metering. i don't know if the D300 really used that for AF as this video suggest, i don't have that particular model.
@Jonboy2312 I've read in the D90 brochure that the D90 uses the exposure sensor to (3D-)track subjects and I see no reason for it being different on the D300.
