I dont mind getting myself an North American F-86 Sabre. As long as i can fly over Kwigillingok, Alaska during 4th of July or any other event that involves in summer time
A jet that flies like a plane not a missile! Oh they just don't make 'em good&clean burning like that anymore!!!! Check out the cheese-tastic Howard Hughes produced movie "Jet Fighter" starring John Wayne for some great F-86 action!
Most of the Allied jets at the time, like Shooting Star and Meteor were outclassed by the MIG-15. F-86 was intended to be a straight wing design, but the appearance of the MIGs over Korea changet hat quickly.
@panzerrat I love the F-86 and it's probably the better of the two, but for looks I'll go with the F-84 Thunderstreak. I love how the fuselage curves from it's barrel-chested midsection to the tail. Would love to see one of those get flying!
Pakistan Air Force had 150 of these in the fleet. F86 Sabres along with F104 Starfighters ensured that we maintained air superiority over the indians in 1965 and 1971 ---
read Chuck Yeagers (man who broke sound barrier in SR71) account of Pakistan's performance against the numerically larger indian air force

wonderful aircraft.....we have many on display throughout the cities -- and also at Pakistan Air Force Museum in Karachi
My Old CAP Group Cdr. obtains an F-86 to put up in front of the group's quanset hut HQ just to help with recruitment. He wasn't looking for anything but an old hangar-queen for display only. Well. Someone got their wires crossed somewhere and it was delivered to Andrews AFB completely refurbished; with AF Personnel waiting for one of our polits to fly it out of Andrews! LOL
My local zoo has one of these. It's balanced on a concrete pillar and it has recently been fixed up by the RCAF so it doesn't fall apart (it was looking a tad shabby for a while there. lol)
No Western fighter shot down more communist fighters during the entire cold war then the F-86. Beautiful and deadly, it left a trail of smoldering Migs in it's wake. I miss the old Air Force..."find the enemy and shoot him down, anything else is nonsense!"
@bowlingwithzombies its like a decoy, preventing more experienced fighter pilots from being shot down under enemy lines. It is also used for recon missions, live video is fed to air force bases here in the US and takes less or more than 5 minutes to inform troopers in any war zone if there are pugilists, tanks, fighters, etc. The UAV Predator and any other military type is crucial for any army regiment in the Middle East.
The Sabres at 3.00mins are from the 4th Fighter wing out of Kimpo AFB Korea. They produced the most F-86 aces during the war. The F-86 at 3.47secs was flown by WW2 ace Lt Col Glenn Eagleston. Shot up by a Mig 15 he nursed it back to Johnson AFB in Japan where it was declared only fit for spare parts.
The Nazis were attempting to develop nukes but would not have succeeded before being defeated.Plus you have the range issue. even if they had a plane with the range to strike America, you have an issue of crew stress. A strike mission would entail 30 hours roundtrip in a prop plane
Conquering the USSR was his objective from the beginning.Attempting it was not a "bad choice' it was the goal.Yes he failed but it was always the objective he was always going to make the attempt,no matter what. The 1939 pact was merely to forestall Soviet assistance to the British and French. He never intended to be allied with the USSR.
Yet again it all boils down to the fact that having a front in Russia, Africa, and western Europe was a big mistake. If he had focused on only Russia he probably would have succeded.
It was his intention to only conquer the USSR.He had to invade Poland in order to get to the soviet border.Invading Poland caused France and Britain to intervene, forcing Hitler to fight on two fronts. His preference was for France and Britain to remain on the sidelines
Don't forget that goofing around for 1.5hrs or flying its max. range of ~1100NM costs you between ~$4000 and ~$6000 bucks (depending on your local taxes) just for the fuel. So no wonder these birds are so cheap.
From a simplicity issue; which is what he is speaking about, I think ; he IS RIGHT. Jet engines are much easier to manage, both pilot wise and maintenance wise. The tricycle gear is far easier to fly than the tail-dragger type (spit, P-51, P-47, Hurricane, etc.). But the Spit and others DID I agree keep England in the war , considering you guys were holding the Germans off by yourselves for almost 3 years before us Yanks even showed up...
OLD SPITFIRE?!. The Supermarine Spitfire saved Europoe and the yanks ass in World War Two. If England have fallen the Nazis would have controled the world. So,please show more respect to the Spit. Cheers!
Ummm...actually it *saved* Europe...mostly by destroying other planes that tried to destroy Europe. Without Spitfires, you would be watching military parades on MarschmusikTube now.
Not so much. If Hitler had mass produced the Me-262(instead of making it a fighter bomber) more than likely we would have lost control of the sky which could've changed the course of the war.
But in the long run if hitler hadn't so many bad choices(like breaking his alliance with russia) then we would all be speaking german. A lot of people dont realize how close germany came to winning WWII.
You are missing my point. The Atlantic and Pacific oceans make America practically impossible to conquer.Hitler might have controlled Europe but never America
The flying tail was developed for the Bell X-1, and was directly appliled to the F-86 design. NOBODY understood why a swept wing was needed for supersonic flight, until Yeager and Hoover did the compressability tests on 51's and 38's. Yeah boy, those Brits had that supersonic flight down. . . to the art of slamming into the ground.
Surely, you're thinking of the F-104 AKA "The Widowmaker"?
The all moving tailplane WAS devised in Britain, by Fairey. The U.S. aircraft industry has always pointedly ignored this but it's true. I think that you'll also find that the Fairey Delta 2 rather slaughtered the world air speed record by a percentage that's never been bettered. Just remind me again who operated the only supersonic aircraft that could cross the Atlantic without refuelling?
Actually the B-1 might need it to go supersonic for any distance, I'll look it up if I get bored.
The SR-71 - No way. It's WAY too fast to need a refueling over that distance. "From the record books: The SR 71 Blackbird has captured several world speed records. In September 1974, crews of the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing (SRW) broke the existing record of four hours, 46 minutes for a trans-Atlantic crossing between New York and London. Their time was an amazing one hour, 55 minutes."
Hah, actually I'm WRONG. With further investigation, I found the following about the SR-71's Atlantic Crossing: "slowing to refuel one time from a specially modified KC-135 refueling tanker..."
So although I have always been a Concorde fan, now I'm even more impressed. Thanks for making me do a little research - I enjoy learning new aviation tidbits.
Ok. The U.S. needs to thank Fairey for the the moving tailplane. As for the supersonic speed record, it will be slaughtered by another country in the future. Who will it be?
The Me262 had the flying tail and swept wings in 1943 set a speed record of 649.3 MPH. also most of the Dada for the F-86 and Mig-15 were from the German's, some German pilot's said they went super sonic in the ME262 in dives. But all documentation were destroyed after the war.
Also, the swept wings on the ME-262 were simply for center of gravity purposes, not speed - though other experimental aircraft did have sweeps for drag reduction and other reasons.
Basically, the entire aircraft industry is VERY tangled as to the origins and outcomes of technology. It will be impossible in the future to know exactly where a lot of ideas started. Just enjoy the results.
The whole discussion of who invented concepts or technologies is pointless anyway. History demonstrates that in a majority of cases, advancements are ultimately achieved by those with influence, salesmanship, monetary/government support, and overall drive to build and lead teams to implement the idea. It is RARELY the actual persons who invented an item who bring it to fruition. It's the motivators who get things done, not the boffins.
