  • Thanks for the lesson! I really dig your playing :D

  • 6 stroke roll is not the same?? but with a double on the right

  • great lesson!

  • r r l R L FOOT.......CAPITAL LETTERS ARE PLAYED HEAVIER OR ACCENTED.

  • Very good example! Wish other people on here would give easy step by step examples like this.

  • what kind of snare is that?

  • very cool ...greetings from melbourne .

  • SECRET??? Steve Gadd, "Up Close", page 7.

    More books, less internet.

  • That was awesome, more steve godd please!!!!

  • nice lesson

  • Not a Steve Gadd lick -- ripped off from Elvin Jones.

  • Great stuff, nice drums... I have the same set, but in green.. and gold plated lug nuts..

    Thanks !!

  • thanks !!!

  • I love your drumset!

  • Gadd doesn't play it straight like this, but more like a ratamacue, which is an alternating rudiment. That's why he ends it with a bass drum. That way he can start with the left hand again.

  • Nobody said Steve Gadd owned the lick or invented it was just used as a reference for it, like you say Bonham did use this lick quite a bit, But in my opinion Gadd is a better drummer. And when you say Bonham started playing drums before him thats not quite true, Bonham was tapping pots and pans in 1953 aged 5 , where as Steve Gadd was Sitting in for Dizzy Gillespie in 1956..just saying :)

  • i love the sound of the snare,nice..

  • I love it that there are still instructors using the term "voicings" when talking drumset!

  • Nice snare drum

  • Clear and concise. Just as an instructor should be. No need to ask any questions. There's lots of flakes on YT!

  • Awesome videos, Ive taken some myself with a nigh end digital camera, but the quality is horrible.. Anything you use or recomend for a good camera?

  • @chuckondrums Record the drums separately with appropiate mics!

  • its not a good drum solo if u dont add some of that in

  • He would be using steve gadd sticks

  • based on the comments most of these clowns wouldn't know drum sticks from chop sticks. Keep up the good work.

  • what hats are those?

  • I've always thought it was L L R R LRF

  • How do the wood hoops go with the accents? Do they dint at all or mark or anything?

  • another shit audio track

  • great video. very clear and concise. one question though, out of interest - are you bouncing the two consecutive lefts, or playing two independent strokes for each left?

  • Its a great lick played very well, but when this guy plays it sounds like a drum lick. When Gadd plays it, it oozes feel, groove and a certain finesse that no one else has. Its still a big secret I'm afraid, as no one can Play like God, sorry I meant Gadd. No, God was right the first time.

  • @DJBufster ther's a huge difference between this guy and gadd tho...and I'm pretty sure we both know who's been playing longer and with more people. so there really is no comparison, and it'd be very unfair to this great man who's taking time to help us all become better musicians to judge him. and besides...gadd's feel can never be covered in one lesson. even steve gadd himself can't explain it.

  • Beautiful drums man!

  • i had those same shoes~haaa

  • it looks like just a floating head

  • What Snare do you use?

    Great video, by the way!

  • @jonas12321 : No! This exercise is very difficult! If you want to play drum, begin to do just the tempo, and practice hard to do each notes perfectly on this tempo when you practice a groove. Sorry for my bad english...

  • ...and when I talk about dumbasses, I'll mention the guy behind the kit. JESUS H CHRIST he is retarded!!!

  • Respect dude !

  • WHERE DO ALL THESE GOOD DRUMMERS LEARN HOW TO PLAY I WANT TO KNOW!

  • i leave turkey and very good cymbal istanbul agop series , you understand cymbals : )

  • Why is the paradiddle necessary for this beat?

Couldn't it be played with straight RLR sticking?

    Foot, RLRL(high-tom)R(low-tom)

    Wouldn't that be easier?

Or would it slow you down and interfere when you tried to add to the beat?

  • @PickUpYourLighters I suppose you could play it that way, its really dependent on how you want to voice it. try moving the two lefts elsewhere, maybe the HH? Also, its Steve Gadd. =)

  • hi hat? zildjian? .... ???

  • what high hat cymbals r they?? =)

  • Muuy buena tecnica chabon!

  • Thank you! Great explaining !!

  • a bass hit with paradiddle?

  • Awesome wood hoops :) sounds great

  • Thats a kick ass lick!

  • is this for people who have never played drum set before....?

  • @jonah12321 Maybe not this one, but it's not that hard once you get comfortable with singles and doubles.

  • @schoolofmusiconline yea...took me like...5 mins to get it that fast lol, just reading the title of vid thought it was a more difficult lick but deff a good lick to use in most styles of music for a drummer

  • @schoolofmusiconline I found it very helpful

  • @jonah12321 hahaha

  • @jonah12321 if you mean play this at 40 Bpm...yes..

  • @jonah12321 fag

  • great vid...I'm not criticizing but how is playing kit with an akward traditional grip comfortable?

  • i love your bass what size is it and what heads do you have? :)

    -Alex

  • great vid.

  • dam get over the "secret" crap who cares watch the vid lol

  • what drum do you have?? =)

  • @secorta In the video you see a Maple Custom, but I use a Maple Custom Absolute these days.

  • @schoolofmusiconline is that the akira jimbo snare?

  • @schoolofmusiconline is that the Billy Cobham snare?

  • Great explanation, thanks.

What makes this lick great is to superimpose it (groups of 3) over a duple subdivision to create a polyrhythmic syncopation (e.g., as 16ths causing the placement of the bass drum note to change it's relation to the beat). This could also be played starting with the bass drum in different locations (e.g., with the BD note as the last note of the figure instead of the first. Lots of possibilities...

  • Great videos.. keep it up. THAT is one beautiful snare!! What is it?

  • where is the secret men ??

  • Phew , I'm really pleased you call left hand 'left hand' and right hand 'right hand' otherwise I have to kill myself.

  • I'm confused, when he says right, is it right or left? This is so hard man.

  • Is it me or is he doing two doubles when he gets faster...like we're supposed to be impressed or something.:|

  • its oosom.! easy and impressive.. addictive and blasting.!

  • A double stroke, followed by two singles.

    Clever.

  • all this guy does is drum and bbq

  • lol at the echo at 2:22

  • Thanks for being Kind by Sharing Knowledge... This is what we really need.. people that offer good things :D... Thank you... I'm Working on this actually... My Interested began watching this "tribute fill" on Todd Sucherman's DVD methods and mechanics... Now I'm More focus, thanks to your explanation. :)

  • You don't need Steve Gadd signature stick to play this lick

  • @jamesdancer73 Nope, you don't. What does that have to do with anything?

  • @XxStrongDrums1996xX just sayin' :)

  • Many many thanks. Now that is one more lick, i have learned from mr. Steve Gadd.

  • WAY FUCKING BETTER THAN EXPERT VILLAGE

  • @blizer22 one time i was at the zoo and watched an elephant take a huge dump. i thought that was the biggest pile of poop id ever seen til i went and saw expert villages instructional videos.

  • Yeah Aussie

  • Thank you, man!

  • Come on people. The video does not say secret... It says "Not so secret". You people are the reason drummers are considered dumb.

  • @RunJaneRunDick To be fair, it used to say secret.

  • @RunJaneRunDick where r drummers considered dumb? ~_^

  • Gadd himself simplifies it even more. Ratamacue, start on RH but replace it with RFOOT.

Keep up the great vids. You are an excellent drummer.

  • is that the akira jimbo signature snare drum? sounds great anyway.

  • Got to love all the experts. You are doing a good thing here

  • I hearby suggest all drum tuition should refer to leading hand as A and weaker hand as B.

No longer R L RR L R LL but A B AA B A BB, this makes it easier for all the left handed players.

please spread this idea if you agree.

  • @peanutpeanut123 you could just practise it both ways like a normal person and gradually become ambidexterous

  • Thank you. This may sound stupid but Gadd usually follows this lick with a similar "reverse " lick, Is there any way you could put the two together for us Gadd wanna bees? :)

  • Thanks for explaining such a cool lick. Now I'm off to practice it.

  • @JGBA45 cheers

  • @JGBA45 How was this trickery? It was a great tutorial, he just put secret so you would watch it.

  • @JGBA45

    Idiot.

  • @JGBA45 "NOT SO" Secret Steve Gadd Drum Lick Explained

  • You look like finch from american pie...

  • why does everyone get a hard-on over this particular gadd fill... i've heard kids in junior high invent similar sounding stuff... sheesh.

  • lol "secret" hahahaha. i could guess the lick even before i watched this.

  • @CheezeyWeezey Yeah it's a little ironic I guess. At least I didn't just show RLFRLFRLFRLFRLF...

  • @CheezeyWeezey "NOT SO" Secret Steve Gadd Drum Lick Explained

  • @CheezeyWeezey And you had to share your expertise with us? People asked Gadd a lot about the fills he did in Aja and he didn't laugh at them. it's a great video and you complain about the title...

  • colol

  • def using this.

  • why do you call them secret?

  • @semiLivedj So more people watch it.

  • @schoolofmusiconline

you should probly inculde ramatacues in your tags. great videos btw mate.

  • good stuff mate, thanks

  • OK I might regret this but this lick is NOT based on a ratamacue, it is based on rudiment #2 the SINGLE STROKE FOUR (or Ruff when played as grace notes). It is broken up between the hands and feet. Many variations on this have been used (Bonham) all essentially based on a sextuplet phrasing. By removing the grace notes the ratamacue is no longer there. Learn your rudiments backwards and forwards and know what the differences are.

  • here's also a similar variation that's really good too.

    watch?v=lbCRY7IGG_0

  • Are these sextuplets essentially?

  • @ZackPomerleau Yes they could be depending on the time signature.

  • @schoolofmusiconline Okay, thanks! I thought so!

  • What kinda hi hat is that?

  • @rastarigate Zildjian K Custom Special Dry 14"

  • no way! i found the lick that i was looking for! you're god!

  • Great vid - any chance of anyone uploading of how this fits in to a 4/4. I can play it at a pacey tempo, but can't fit it in! :)

  • @alenty It's not 4/4

  • Comment removed

  • @DTxOctavariumx Thanks, but what time sig is it meant for?

  • @alenty 6/8 I believe.

  • @DTxOctavariumx Lol, it goes perfectly into 4/4. Play it as triplets or sextuplets...

  • @drummerkingmike Well it goes perfectly into 6/8.

  • @drummerkingmike Or 16 note triplets, right? I suppose there would be no difference in playing 6 notes of sextuplets or 6 notes of triplets inside one quarter note in 4/4 measure.

  • @dejd Yeah totally (sextuplets = 16th triplets - different name for same thing) depends on the speed of the piece of course, but that would be the most obvious way to play it

  • great breakdown ^_^

  • what kind of snare is that? i like....

  • @donius22 That's a Yamaha Akira Jimbo Signature 13"x7"

  • perhaps a Bonham lick?

  • is that akira jimbo's snare?

  • Haha I like how he readjusts himself, does this swaying motion, but good video nonetheless!

  • Great little lick, I can't wait to work on it.

  • hahahah my teacher showed this to me this week and i thought it had been his creation...lol

  • Very very good teacher I must say.

  • wow its so funny when the teachers speed it up and just go crazy

  • @sushiquad I think I just got excited...

  • @sushiquad you should check out sacha's other videos, this ain't going crazy. theres a beast that lurks within this mortal man haha one of the purest talents mixed with unrelentingly accurate technique. a drum super hero

  • is it just me or this guy sounds just like CHUCK ?

  • excellent playing..

i started using gadd sticks about 5yrs ago... they bring out the best sound off the toms,etc...but how do you hold on to them when you get sweaty

  • @ammobile1 I honestly don't use painted sticks much on gigs because unless it's a cold venue, the sweat thing is really an issue. I do occasionally pull out the Gadd sticks if I'm playing a song that requires a lot of cross-stick playing because the sound and feel is just so good from them. I mainly use 5a Extreme or 2b. Thanks for watching.

  • @ammobile1if you sand down the bottom is works perfect

  • @pollymatication Have a listen to Dave Weckl on Chick Corea Elektric Band - 'Amnesia' (song), or Gary Novak on Chick Corea - 'Time Warp' (album). That's the sound I was aiming for here on what was, by the way, a loan kit. I don't mind that you don't dig it though - to each his own.

  • @schoolofmusiconline ooh, now you gone a made me feel bad for being mean. Thanks for this moment of self reflection.

  • @schoolofmusiconline dont mind that kind of people mate, they are haters, i got something out of video so thank you.

  • @pollymatication Every drummer has there own sound, but far to many drummers choke or muffle there heads too much, the drums should be open and resonent, i think this bass drum is spot on in this vid, its exactly the sound i have on my vintage Ludwig and when voiced with the other drums on the kit theres no better sound for Jazz or Funk!!! But i respect that you dont like the sound its youre choice thats the great thing about being a drummer were all a bit different..

  • @Joffy76 yeah, you're right. I meant to remove that comment after realising how childish I sound. I didn't realise that was the sound he's after. I don't know much about jazz or fusion, Im a rock drummer.

  • @gstek1 i hope you're being sarcastic

  • @gstek1 That's a 20" Maple Custom with Coated Ambassadors on both sides. Cheers.

  • Nice video, thanks. My favorite part is how it's not a ratamacue.

  • akira jimbos snare drum?

  • Great audio.

  • do you really need to explain if you say right youre talking bout youre right hand if you say left...? be brief but clear

  • Geez... This must be the most boring interpretation of ratamacue I've ever seen... "Midi file"... '' tom tom idea" ... WTF! How about Steve Gadd's "Up Close" with the "original" explanation, dumb-ass?

  • @willkanoff

    It's not a ratamacue.

  • Comment removed

  • @schoolofmusiconline That's right! You play it back to front and it becomes "not a ratamacue". You really convinced yourself that people are dumb, r u? Dude, get off the drum kit and go into marketing, you'll fit right in. Meanwhile, take a look at me, I am walking, left , right, left, right...

  • @willkanoff

Calling this lick a ratamacue would be incorrect. Gadd says he derived it from a ratamacue, but it has become something completely different in application. A ratamacue is a single stroke four preceded by a drag. This lick is a non-alternating ratamacue, with the drag interpreted as 2 even notes (aka paradiddle-diddle), then displaced by 3 notes, THEN partly voiced on the kick drum. To explain how it relates to a ratamacue would have been a waste of time. Just like posting this.

  • it´s not a ratamacue, mr trumpet player.

  • Comment removed

  • that was awesome man thanks!

  • Very very good teaching .. and excellently executed !

  • THANK YOU YOU ARE A REAL GOOD TEACHER
