@manrey12 I will and to be honest I'm learning a thing or 2 that keeps me out of situations like this. Thanks very much for your comment and for your kind words I appreciate them very much.
I hate it when a person complains about me behind my back about something that I fixed that actually worked when it left my shop. I think if your gonna complaint , at least have the gutts to go to the person directly.
Eric, keep up the great work! Bought your video about changing the timing belt on a 98 Honda Accord v6. The cost for the video was more than reasonable and being able to see the job done from start to finish makes it easier to venture forward into the unknown. Screw the negative haters!
@NETWizzJbirk This video is not about an auto repair but about getting paid by a 'company' for services rendered. I don't release vehicles till I get paid.
Money is being hoarded by the rich. Bottom line. They print more (causing inflation) and keep more. The price of fuel isn't helping any either. I dont have a family because i dont have enough. And i am 50 yrs old. But i keep pushing forward. What else can i do? That new Lambo V12 is awesome. Saw it on Top Gear show tonight.. Look for the vid.
@journeyquest1 Times are tough for sure but I think attitude is everything, you can't change what happens to you but you can change how you feel about it is probably the best way I can put it. Thank you for your comment.
I only been watching your show the last few day as my car had problem with brake pedal that goes all the way to the floor,by watching the video clip on you tube it help me a lot in some off the mechanic work even those I,am not a mechanic.by watching your video clip on "slow pay" it kind of like pull the tears out of my eyes,I can understand what you a going through, especially when you got a family, but hey keep smiling ! what you a doing it help million people around the world .thank you .
@mikelspage Helping people is the best part of what I do and it keeps me going on even the worst of days. Thanks very much for your comment I really appreciate it.

Pretty glad that you wound up, uploading this video Eric. I felt your pain, with every word. Everyone gets in a funk, even folks who drive Lambo's. Some are able to break free in a matter or hours or days - some live in that funk for much longer. Appreciate a nudge in the right direction.
You are the reason the internet should exist! Keep the videos coming. I wish your videos could be on tv....i would much rather watch one of your videos then the junk on tv these days. Knowledge is Power!
Hey don't get to down on yourself.. I don't know what got you so down but since i've started watching your videos you re-kindled my passion for automobiles. So thank you and keep em coming.
@gearheader420 Thanks very much for that. It did get better, much better actually. I'm happy to keep making the videos though. Thanks for the comment.
He you should me how to unclog my heater core and saved me tons of money. I can't thank you enough for your time and your videos. I owe you some beers my Eric the car guy!!!
Hi, well about getting paid for your labour is nothing to get emotional about. There is a strict rule which is to be very clear about it towards your customers. Bills are to be paid with a clear understanding of a deadline to it (should be paid in full if the car is returned - actually that is the deadline) - if not paid by than visit the customer and collect it! It works. You are not playing for bank and collect 10% interest or - do you? If you are to easy on that you will be broke soon....
people are like this all over the place, they take forever to pay....torment the life out of you while your working on their car rush rush... then take 6 months to to pay 500 $ Good vid Eric, Ray
Dude your are the coolest and got alot of heart man. You have helped me learn more than anyone. I owe you big man. How can I help you? Just let me know if there is anything. Oh on a Haha, my wife said if I stay dirty much longer, she's not going to get dirty with me. Haha
@1967800 Thank you very much for that offer and comment. I guess the best way is to keep watching and tell your friends about me, the bigger I get the more I'll be able to do with these videos, it's my hope to do this for the rest of my career. Thanks again for the comment.
3:55 "If I can help someone else, I'm helping myself" Truer words were never spoken. Four years ago I was at the lowest in my life. I got SO low that I didn't care about anything any more- I've always been helpful to people and caught on to this. I also read how to win friends and influence people. Since then I've gone k'nuts helping people and helping them to feel important. That's all any one wants and I've met very few who didn't deserve it. YOU my friend are AWESOME! I love what U do
@briansmobile1 Yea it is much better to live that way, since I started living by that my life has done nothing but get better (I used to be a real selfish ahole if I'm honest), sure I have my bad days like in this video but you move on because it's always changing. I really appreciate your comment and I LOVE your channel, keep up the good work.
I am disabled but have a lot of knowledge since I was in the NAVY for 7 years on submarines in the NUCK field plus I have worked in tv radio repair plus workede for NCR and learned a lot more electronics and computers . I have fixed a few computers and just last week I lady brought me her car with a new radio from best buy she said they wanted 50 bucks to look at it since they did not install it I looked at it found shipping screws still in it she has yet come back and payed me 20 bucks.
@ncrdisabled First thank you for your service. It is true that sometimes it's more about giving good service than it is about money, it's not a bad thing to just take care of people but some feel that they need to be compensated for everything they do and sometimes it's company policy, it's nice to know there are other people out there that also care about what they do and so what they can to take care of people, thank you for your comment.
eric, you are awesome, i;m a eric the car guy viewer, and recently found this site, and the fact that your doing these videos/actions just to help others, blows me away. you have a great heart and a sound mind. and alot of what ur saying applies to alot of us, i jus wanna say say thanks for u being u and paying it forward, it does more than u know.
Your the man Eric! found your channel when I searched for a newer Ram engine swap. Thankfully I dont need to do one but I was curious to see what all was involved, and watching those videos made me realize even the pro's run into the stupid little problems that we all face in fixing cars. Looking onto your other vids Ive learned alot more, and I thank ya! Greetings from Canada, Eh.
Eric, I know exactly how you feel. People think small business owners have it made, myself included, but once they go for it like myself. We find out it is a totally different ball game. I started about a year ago and it has been the hardest thing I ever did, but I wouldn't change anything. We will make it !!
@11ingenious It is tough but once things get off the ground it can be very rewarding. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors and hope you have continued success.
ive always thought it would be cool to be a mechanic, after watching your videos i realized i could do it, not saying im a mechanic but ive gone from being afraid to change spark plugs to doing engine swaps tranny swaps pretty much can take a honda apart and put it back together no school just etcg and other internet sources. Your the shit eric.
@cheeseslinger It is cool to be a mechanic but it's not for everyone, once you start doing it for a living it's a very different thing than working on your own or your friends cars, it becomes like any other job after a while I hate to say. I wish you luck with whatever you decide though.
I like your honesty. I started a business and it is very hard. I'm praying and working and sometimes wondering if I'm doing the right thing or not. I want to help my family (husband and kids) financially. I'll keep pushing forward for a while to see if it's going to bloom and if not I will try something else. Hang in there and I will be praying for you and your family.
@naomithecandlegirl It's not easy that's for sure but once you get over the 'hump' it's a very rewarding thing to have a successful business. I wish you the best of luck. Thanks for the comment.
please do not let the negative get to you, hold your head up high and keep up the excellant work, your doing a very helpfull thing and many people love it, Best Regards, Bob~
@robertfrate I'm not so worried about the negative people these days as I have a lot more positive support from great fans like you, thanks for your comment I really appreciate it.
@ETCG1 if i could i would give u a firm hand shake and a thank you.......ive got everyone down here at our shop watching your vids.......keep them coming!
@ Ericthecarguy: I have a 93 Corolla DX Auto. I start the car ignition with no problem. But when I depress the brake and press the shifter lock knob with my thumb, it (thumb-knob) will not move. Thus I cannot shift out of park. Do you know what i can do to fix it and do you have video on how to fix it? thank you
@DarkCasting Check to see if your brake lights are working, if they aren't check the brake light switch. For now you can use the interlock release and start the car in neutral but make sure you have brake lights as driving without them is very dangerous.
You have helped hundreds of people. I am really shocked that you do not have thriving business. If you were anywhere the driving distance from me, not only I would be bringing all my vehicles to you but making sure all my friends bring all their car maintanance to you. Is Cincinati area so different from Boston suburb? Around here, you would be so busy that you would have no time to do videos.
@vgs8606 Business is actually pretty good and to be honest I have no complaints really other than people taking a long time to pay sometimes but that's par for the course really. I don't take on too much mechanical work these days because doing ETCG work takes up a lot of time to tell the truth. Thanks for your comment I really appreciate it.
I think I know how you feel. I've been busting my butt for the last year on my channel, but it's just not building quickly enough. It's tough to stay motivated because it's not like we get paid tons of money as partners....at least not at first. The great thing about your channels is that you are definitely helping a lot of people. I have benefited greatly from watching your vids..I learn new things all the time. Do whatever you need to do to support your family, that's what's important.
@RamblinAround It's taken a LOT of time and effort to get ETCG where it is today, I've been working 7 days a week for more than 12 hours a day for some time to get where I am. It is starting to pay off but your right, it's easy to get discouraged when your not seeing a return for your time. My motivation was, 'at least it seems like I'm helping someone'.
Also I'm studying your videos everyday I'm here at work not doin anything so when i get back into school I'm not behind and when I finish school maybe u can have a show that u can invite some of the mechanics that u have motivated on that show i'm aslo sorry that I can't buy your other videos cause all my money is goin into the school. Just thanks for your help and your videos
@scar122000 I know what being a poor student is like so no worries. You might enter the contest as you could win not only the videos but also a t-shirt and hat. Good luck with school.
Most small business owners have constant cash flow headaches caused by customers that are slow to kak up the cash. It's not rooted in today's economy - it's a problem that has been around as long as there have been small businesses.
You're entitled to get paid for the effort of putting together full length how-to tutorials. Ignore the people who whine like little girls because they have to pay for a service. If I had a car issue you had a fee-based vid for I'd buy it without hesitation
i'm doing electronics repair (component level stuff.. not stupid boardswapping). LCD monitors and TVs, (computer-)powersupplies and mainboards... all that kinda stuff.
buy defective stuff cheap, fix it (properly), and sell it on another ebay account.
so far so good, but you seriously wouldn't believe all the strange excuses i get to hear from buyers why it takes them so long to pay... like 2 or sometimes 3 weeks. you're not alone with this =/
hey buddy. if i lived by you id be giving you my camaro to work on lol. yeah it may suck that your charging for certain videos.. but its understandable. you cant have everything for free ya know? who cares what people think as far as that goes. you have done more then enough to help us poor/inexperienced people out by showing us how to save some money.
@ChubbyLoveDumpster That is the core of ETCG, saving people money. Even if it's a pay video it's still much cheeper than taking it to someone. Thanks for the comment.
that really annoyed me that people would whinge about you charging for videos. the videos are practically full length DVDs. ericthecarguy also has a cost associated with it too. domain name, hosting, video software, editing pc, cameras, storage media and time. all videos cost money to make so people should be lucky that only a handful cost money to view
@Mccainscellmate I appreciate that very much but I have a hard time seeing what I do with ETCG as a TV show as the length varies so much. There might be a spin off of some sort though that could be worked out should the opportunity arise.
@chillincruisin I use Final Cut Pro but I would not say that's for the beginner though. If you have a PC you might try Movie Maker or if you have a Mac start with iMovie, those will get your feet wet to find out if you like doing it or not.
Your an art guy - make up some t-shirts cups whatever.
If'n folks like your stuff - it'll sell. The good news is no overhead for you.
BTW - just found your channel by complete accident - great stuff.
In the middle of a never ending project - will use some of your ideas for sure.
We all do something for a living - if you don't get paid for whatever it is - you are not living anymore. You spent the time money and effort to get trained etc. Don't apologize.
Hey Eric just watched your slow pay vid. Just thought I would give you a bit of an uplift. Me like 1000"s of others really enjoy what you are doing for us. Just can't thank you enough, keep up the great work and we all will be here behind you hopefuly helping to push you to all your dreams. Thanks again, jeff.
the actual scenario... the world economy is in the toilet, people HAVE TO UNDERSTAND that your job is being a master automotive technician, there are like 98% free videos of eric the car guy and 2% full lenght awesome and cheap videos for sale, come on, for 10 bucks? he is working people and THAT is his job i think is just A LOT just by making those, where do you find videos like thise? not outdated? well.. guess what.. just eric the car guy have those :D
@FITVANITY11 I think we are on the same page because part of making this video was talking out loud about the things that were weighing me down thus 'freeing' me from them. I did feel better and even thought of not posting this video at all but I decided to do it anyway as I though perhaps some viewers might benefit from knowing even ETCG has his down days but the point is to keep moving forward and to stay positive. Thanks for your comment.
Please ignore the negatives Eric. You've posted a LOT of helpful and entertaining videos and I always enjoy them. Anyone who has a problem with you doing "side videos" for money is just being ridiculous. Considering that you've already given (and hopefully continue to give) so much free content, asking $10 from a few fans for more specific info is hardly a rude thing. Chin up, ignore the haters, and I look forward to your next vid.
I know where you're coming from, been there with slow and no payers. I don't think 10 bucks for a complete video that walks you through the whole job is unreasonable, if I was looking to do that job I'd happily pay 10 bucks
@Explainagainhow To be honest this video really wasn't suppose to be about the negative comments on the pay videos but more about a series of events that brought me down that day. My hope was to focus on the 'even if times are tough stick with it' thing but it seemed to come off differently, I have however appreciated all the support that I've gotten from this video including your comment.
@Explainagainhow "... if I was looking to do that job I'd happily pay 10 bucks".
I agree, me too.
But unfortunately, few of the current faithful viewers are in the market for that exact vehicle, model, year, and problem. So, the income from that specific video may not be much, at least from the current fan base. I'll guess the income may largely come from people who search Google, maybe not even knowing about Eric. Knowing the power of Google, such income may be slow, steady and consistent.
@spelunkerd Agree entirely, if I was doing a belt on a model that was close enough to that one $10 to walk me through it would be nothing compared to giving it to a shop to do. But like you say, unless the video has broader appeal then it wont get that much revenue, which is a shame. Maybe Eric needs to do more generic videos, but that would be hard work. I do sympathise with the man, because in my own way I'm not too far from his situation.
@wardubo Visit the Fix It page on the EricTheCarGuy website as they are available at the EricTheCarGuy store, I'll be announcing that later this week.
I don't think charging for repair video's will fly with your current fan base simply because ETCG started as a free source to help people save money. I love watching your repair videos, I hope to watch more quality videos without the price tag.
@mazzmari And you will but I outlined my plans in episode 1 and if you want me to be able to keep making the 'free' videos I will also need to support my family, if not, you get NO videos.
Eric, Ignore the idiots let them pay $300 for a mechanic to fix their car instead of a small fee which is better for others or let them try and use the free info text guides off google which may screw their car up so they will learn a big lesson.
i have seen a lamborghin orange gallardo spyder near where i work as white Nissan GT-R, and where i work is not a place you will see imported supercars.
@IIGrayfoxII Your right and I thank you for your comment and support. It's one thing to see those cars at a show or something but quite another to see them in action on the road, very cool.
You have helped me a lot with your videos, i have fixed some cars thanks to you, now it is time to help you, i am not a rich guy but i will help you with some bucks that i got fixing cars thank to you, AND YOUTUBERS lets help ERIC with some MONEY!!
@partidonazi1689 Your words are a great help actually, to be honest this video was less about money and more about overcoming adversity in my opinion, it was my hope to perhaps provide some guidance to those that might also be struggling. If you would like to donate however there is a donate button on the fix it page of my website if you feel so inclined but I ask for nothing as your comment speaks volumes, thank you.
@bowlingballout That was kind of the problem, when it came time to release the video they decided to change the terms last minute which made the whole thing a no go. I think you would do well with your Italian-English series putting them on DVD or as downloads I LOVE those things. If you send me an email I can give you some details.
Eric The Car Guy may be down, but he is not out. He has his priorities together, and has some great business sense that will take him far. Plus you treat people well, and that will pay you many bonuses in the future. Stay dirty, and stay happy!
"This video camera is the therapist that I can afford". What a great one liner!
One of the things I witnessed in India is the complete lack of correlation between possessions and happiness. And note the fact that almost all the great artists of the world completed their work at a time of abject poverty. You will look back at this years later with pride over what you've accomplished.
It's going to be our loss if you can't make this work. Advertising seems to be the key.
Heh, I can really relate to the whole incident with the Lamborghini. I'll stop and celebrate whenever I see something like that. It can make a shitty day a whole lot better seeing and hearing a car like that.
Dude, this recession has kicked the ass of a lot of people myself included. I've felt the way you feel in this video on more than one occasion. I'm in the construction business, so that should speak for itself. One good thing dude, when the economy is bad, people tend to keep their old cars going rather than buying a new one. So, try and keep postiive, cause attitude and outlook are 80% of the battle. Remember many here are or have been in the same boat, so you are not alone
@midlantic1 It's funny because I was hoping to make this video to encourage the viewers and it turns out that they have been trying to encourage me. Yea this recession sucks but if we stick together we might just make it through. Thanks very much for your comment, it meant a lot.
@curtis9188 Not really, it's a very small percentage of what they make but as I said in the other comment that's not what this video was really about.
@curtis9188 You only really make money when you have a consistant Subscriber base over 100,000 people. The people with hundreds of thousands of Subscribers that have people watching them consistanly, make a lot of money. If you only have a few thousand people, it's about a enough to keep your lights on and pay your internet bill every month. If you want to see a guesstimate of Popular YouTubers - looks on Urgo6667's site socialblade. com it's an estimate but nowhere near exact.
@curtis9188 Yes but that's not what this video was about, in my mind it was about thanking all those great fans that I have that are so supportive even in the worst of times.
Try to keep your chin up Eric, I can tell you come from a long family line of people that have the wonderful concept of paying it forward, What goes around comes around, what you do onto others is what will be done onto you. There's your brother with his Yello Blue Bus . org who's way braver then anyone I know of to sacrafice time with his own family to be half way around the world to help the families of others. Then there's you, You help so many durring times of hardship that for the
Nay sayers that all they know how to do is bag on you for trying to keep the lights on, all I got to say to them is let them eat dirty kitty litter and not listen to them. I feel your pain/depression b/c I'm sorta going though it also. After I just shelled out almost $200 in getting that intake gasket fixed on my GMC, The next day I get a vacuum leak that I couldn't find & cost me $75 at a shop to find it in 10 minutes, then the next day (yesterday) my automatic headlights...
don't want to work correctly. They're suppose to come on automaticly when I pop the parking brake & the only lights I have are the DRL's (Daytime Running Lights) no dash, tail or console lights & even if I swich the lights on manually, Still nothing.
I'm worried that I won't be able to pay my bills this month if this Jimmy keeps giving me Hell. I'm still only working 31 hrs/week, & my other job hasn't called me in for work since Feb, 2nd. So I feel your pain Eric.
@Michiganborn1969 Yea, my hope with ETCG was to help people just like you at least try and bypass unexpected repair bills that can really wreck your budget. You've always been one of my best fans and I can't thank you enough for it. Hang in there and don't be afraid to send me an email about those car problems I'm happy to help where I can.
Dude don't kill yourself....

@4711Express Good advice but in this particular case I was not speaking of a car customer but rather a business one. Thanks for the comment.

@DarkCasting Check to see if your brake lights are working, if they aren't check the brake light switch. For now you can use the interlock release and start the car in neutral but make sure you have brake lights as driving without them is very dangerous.

If I had a car issue you had a fee-based vid for I'd buy it without hesitation
philosifur1 11 months ago
slow pay.. meh.. i know that just too well.
i'm doing electronics repair (component level stuff.. not stupid boardswapping).

ChubbyLoveDumpster 11 months ago
@ChubbyLoveDumpster That is the core of ETCG, saving people money. Even if it's a pay video it's still much cheeper than taking it to someone. Thanks for the comment.
ETCG1 11 months ago
that really annoyed me that people would whinge about you charging for videos. the videos are practically full length DVDs. ericthecarguy also has a cost associated with it too. domain name, hosting, video software, editing pc, cameras, storage media and time. all videos cost money to make so people should be lucky that only a handful cost money to view

ETCG1 11 months ago
Please ignore the negatives Eric. You've posted a LOT of helpful and entertaining videos and I always enjoy them. Anyone who has a problem with you doing "side videos" for money is just being ridiculous. Considering that you've already given (and hopefully continue to give) so much free content, asking $10 from a few fans for more specific info is hardly a rude thing. Chin up, ignore the haters, and I look forward to your next vid.
Take care bro.

ETCG1 11 months ago
I know where you're coming from, been there with slow and no payers. I don't think 10 bucks for a complete video that walks you through the whole job is unreasonable, if I was looking to do that job I'd happily pay 10 bucks
Explainagainhow 11 months ago
@Explainagainhow To be honest this video really wasn't suppose to be about the negative comments on the pay videos but more about a series of events that brought me down that day. My hope was to focus on the 'even if times are tough stick with it' thing but it seemed to come off differently, I have however appreciated all the support that I've gotten from this video including your comment.
ETCG1 11 months ago
@Explainagainhow "... if I was looking to do that job I'd happily pay 10 bucks".
I agree, me too.
But unfortunately, few of the current faithful viewers are in the market for that exact vehicle, model, year, and problem. So, the income from that specific video may not be much, at least from the current fan base. I'll guess the income may largely come from people who search Google, maybe not even knowing about Eric. Knowing the power of Google, such income may be slow, steady and consistent.
spelunkerd 11 months ago
@spelunkerd Agree entirely, if I was doing a belt on a model that was close enough to that one $10 to walk me through it would be nothing compared to giving it to a shop to do. But like you say, unless the video has broader appeal then it wont get that much revenue, which is a shame. Maybe Eric needs to do more generic videos, but that would be hard work. I do sympathise with the man, because in my own way I'm not too far from his situation.
