Any Lover of the MoTown sound, from the Temptations to Marvin, the Supremes to Smokey, and who do not know the Funk Brothers... owe it to themselves to find Standing in the Shadows of Motown. (this vid is a little cut from it)
You will have the biggest OMG moment as you FINALLY understand why if you loved any MoTown, you loved it all.
When the Detroit riots broke out the white Funk Bros were in great danger of having the crap kicked out of them or worse, but their black colleagues "had their backs". The Funk Bros would take a bullet for each other. It ain't about Black and White. It's about WHO's GOT SOUL.
she inspired me so much. sounds so ridiculous, but seeing her sing there next to these amazing musicians makes me nearly cry b/c this is what I would love to do. singing is my life and she is a part of my learning process. she is amazing. the musicians are amazing.
Now that I know how Joan Osborne "really " sounds, I'm a complete convert. She's a blue eyed angel of soul. She could sing the yellow pages and it would sound amazing.
I have an idea for a reality show: Its called Soul Sister. Every season a new cast of black female singing stars are sent to "soul boot camp" with Joan Armstrong where they learn how not to suck at their own game.
Season 1: Rihanna, Beyonce, Tekitha and Missy Elliot.
If you haven't seen "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown" by now...get it!!! It's a fantastic documentary with several great vocalists performing with most of the original FUNK BROTHERS. THOSE cats were totally AMAZING!!! Their talent...their stories...their love...and sadly, the tragedies and injustices they suffered from both themselves, and the powers-that-be. THESE cats...WOW!!! Second to none!! Barry Gordy owes EVERYTHING to the FUNK BROTHERS!!!
Yes, yes, yes! SEE THIS MOVIE. Find out the truth about what went on behind all those hits. Some real shenanigans - people not being paid or being paid LOW wages, names not allowed on the records, living in poverty on old age....not FAIR! That part is a drag, but the music and the musicians are wonderful....it'll make you cry it's so good!
@rocktenniscat especially when they were back in studio a playing 'you really got a hold on me', you could tell how happy they were to be together after years apart. i boo hooed when i saw that.
@jabnhook2 - yes, what a movie. I laughed and cried, and learned a LOT about the vicious game called The Music Business. Those poor old guys....many passed away now. We saw the Funk Brothers a few years ago in Toronto. Joan Osborne couldn't make it, but we got DARLENE LOVE instead! What a night, and how lovely to see portraits of all those brothers gone before on the stage
@jabnhook2 co-sign on this statement... the title of "greatest band in the world" may be applied to one or two popular bands (depending on who you ask) but the funk brothers are it...hands down.
@jabnhook2 Am watching it right now, excellent, almost finished. Who's the guy who sings Marvin Gay's song Heard it through the Grapevine? And is that Rick James in purple sequins???
@talex42 That's Ben Harper singing Heard it through the Grapevine in the movie. The dude with the sequins is Bootsy Collins, fantastic bass player... look up some old clips from early seventies of Bootsy. He was determined to put on a great show with these guys... While there were some fantastic performances all around, Joan Osborne sang with a love for these guys and their music that was well beyond everyone else in the documentary. I'm sure that's why she hit the road with them afterward.
@jabnhook2 you said it best....I'm just NOW learning about the Funk Brothers...and I've lost mine mind...can not get enough and I have "Standing In The Shadows Of Motown"
'Peterpiper54' " I was just browsing down through the comments, & realize you had posted that, you had watched a show called,' A Night Out With The Funk Brothers ,where Joan was a singer on the show, & does' Heard It Through The Grapevine'. I'll be honest here, I don't have HD anything.... T.V., Playpreview...none of it. So my question to you, would be ..."Do you know if this'Montreal Jazz Fest 2004', was ever released on dvd? Any Info you might have, would be very much appreciated. Thanks!
" I loved this part in the movie,...and was looking forward to her doing, the whole song." She does excellent on 'What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted!" And I , personally think, she would have 'smoked the stage', ...if they would have turned her loose with this number!" Love her voice!
A few? years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME
On HDNet there is a show that plays every now and then called "A Night Out with the Funk Brothers". It was filmed at the Montreal Jazz Fest in 2004. Joan is one of the singers on the show and she does "Grapevine".
@thegirl44 Gerald Levert, Bootsy Collins, and Joan Osborne brought their A-games to the Funk Bros.!!! All three performed flawlessly. Here's the "Str8 Skinny" in my opinion: The Funk Brothers can make anyone sound better. I would LOVE to sing "My Girl"..."What Becomes of the Broken Hearted"..."Ain't too Proud to Beg" with those LEGENDS!!
I just watched this DVD, and am totally floored by the musicianship that I could only hope to scratch the surface of. I learned so much, that at my young age I am embarrassed to have given credit for some of these Hits to people that covered them years later. For example the Cool Whip commercial I didnt know that jingle came from the song Cool Jerk, I had never heard that song before. I am re-learning music, and damn it feels good
Yep, the movie's incredible. I cried--a lot. Go and listen to all the old Motown, and then go back and listen to James Brown, then the roots of rock n roll, especially Little Richard, then go back farther, Billie Holliday, the listen to Bessie Smith and her peers. Listen to the real stuff, you'll learn a lot. You'll also learn a ton about triumph over adversity

She didn't do this song with the Funk Brothers for the DVD, Ben Harper did, and he mangled it in my opinion.

I just meant I wished they kept the clip rolling. I thought Harper did a pretty good job but really it's the funk brothers that make it special!

The guy in the hat is Richard '' Pistol '' Allen one of the main three studio drummers for motown. He was from Memphis, Tn.
