  • The true ustad of our times.. So many fakes out there.

  • Amazing...

  • Aprateem !!!! Wah Ustad !

  • at 2:40 Shuddh ma. So this is Raag Yaman Kalyan?

Such is the master's gift in that when a raag is performed it always seems the inexhaustable 'correct' one..........Breathless

  • @12347771 Yaman Kalyan has Ma Tivar in, not Shudh :)

  • Wonderful music by a real Maestro: deeply inspiring...truly spiritual!

  • vidaripollen...you r right with your comment....a rare gharana....infact this is the gharana which is wat i follow when i sing.....i have been trained in this gharan...sadly no vocalists in the world left in this gharana.....

the gharana is called etawaa...the whole system of playing and singing is based on sitar...thus the stretch on ceratin notes which no other gharana does.....

a true musician will know how complex it is....

  • Kya badhé, kya badhé ustadji!

  • what raga is it please???

  • @shivanishri70 shyam kalyan

  • great gharana music.very rare commodity in todays hectic world.

  • this is so beautiful that it makes me sad

  • How much is weed where you live?

  • Maestro !!!

the ancient druphad is now alive more than ever. Thank you

  • Maestro !!!

  • MRSPINBAD BEING POOR IS PRIDE THAT ALLAH HAS BESTOWED UPON US. BEING HUMBLE IS EVEN MORE BEAUTIFULL. DO NOT DISRESPECT THIS USTAD WHO HAS SPENT YEARS OF HARD WORK TO ACHIEVE THIS LEVEL OF MASTERY UPON THE SITAR. LISTEN TO HIS ART AND ENJOY IT INSTEAD OF MAKING RUDE COMMENTS. HIS SITAR SOUNDS ALMOST AS BEAUTIFULL AS MOHAMMED RAFI SAHABS HEAVENLY VOICE.

  • @MrSpinbad he's far from poor, and that's just a western perception you are limited by. there is something about sitar that takes a master like him into a different place, he literally connects with the music.

    plz, dont disrespect.

  • It's simply amazing how easily and gracefully Ustad Ji expresses each and every sur with perfection. This piece is simply mindblowing!

  • my only quarrel is that he instrument is tuned to an open chord so the drone gets annoying, but the rest is very inavotive and very enlightening. something ill be looking to take across to my guitar

  • wonderful performance!!

  • Ustad Shahid Parvez is an extraordinarily gifted performer. His command over meend, murki, taans etc is superb. However, I have one comment on this particular presentation of Raag Shyam Kalyan. It is this : He has several times used the phrase M( teevra) D N D P. It is not correct. It is the phrase of Raag Yaman Kalyan. Such use confuses the listener. It should not be used in Raag Shyan Kalyan

  • @bbdeshmukh21 There are people who will differ with you. Shyam Kalyan is a combination of raga Shyam and Kalyan. The phrase you mentioned is a Kalyan ang phrase and goes perfectly well in Shyam Kalyan. In fact it increases the beauty of the raga. The same phrase in used in Puriya Kalyan, Yaman, Yaman Kalyan and several other Kalyan ang ragas.

  • to much hash !! lol my music sounds like this some times ..

  • when i used to get drunk now and then earlier on i took guitar and imitated japanese or indian music.. sometimes with the slide, or by loosening strings and using bends and weirdness of disorderly tunings.

f-g around drunkenly with the music and instrument gives a lot of new ideas.

after all, nothing will lead you to the music but your ear, picking up, imitation and close and free cooperation with the instrument.

  • i saw ustad vilayet khan many times played like this type of meend, but noe a days parvez is unparallal-p.banerjee

  • When I was a child, and before I started sitar, I used to think that - about musician's facial expressions. But, although I do not do it myself, I totally understand what they are doing. I can only speak for Indian classical music - it takes you to a unique state of beauty and intensity. Indian classical music is intimately connected to the land's spiritual roots. Even hanging on one meend can feel almost blissful.

  • yes

i think the facial mimicking of meends is bit overdone

  • The first time i came across this video series there were more than 4 seprate videos - can anyone tell me where to get them??

  • He has a music school in Toronto.

From there I am sure you can purchasse his Cd's.

I saw two of his concerts in New York 2 years ago.

I can tell you guys he is absolutely the best sitarist player on earth.

Also he is wonderful human being.

  • واہ استاد جی واہ، سبحان اللہ۔

  • effortless

  • 2:48 blown me away

  • Does somebody knows how to play 1:58, figure ?

It is very common and sounds amazing. But very hard to play it.

  • very common..and hard..indeed!

i had a friend of mine explain it to me..its pretty complex, 3 meends with many notes, but i forgot it before even attempting it

nikhil banerjee uses it quite a bit as well

  • sa ni re sa ni sas is the figure and you need to pull from dha fret and get sas tlike dha-sa fast

    this is standard

  • its simple

    it is

sa ni re sa ni sa played fast

    also played from dha fret

actually all teh figures are easy, dont worry

  • @lordshivatheboatman really i didn't know that it was so 'easy' and 'simple'. But can you kindly tell us why cant this be heard in anyone else's playing.? All trying the same thing yet their don't last this long. I request to put a video of yours where you are doing the same. may be we can learn from your playing.

  • 0:45 "Ni" sounds amazing.

  • Esto interpretar y lo demás simulacros.

  • kya bat hai

  • 2:48 = heaven

  • The Raga of the Mooladhara, the abode of Sri Ganesha and the continent of Australia. Bhairav is for the Sahasrara, the 1000 petalled lotus at the fontanelle bone area at the top of the head...(Latin for "fountain").

  • most definitely shyam kalyan

  • it's sham kalyan

  • ya it looks like shyad kalyan to me. but his focus on R to P near the end perhaps suggests kamod?

  • 1:23 funny face reaction

  • I didn't think it was Jhinjhoti because of the raised "Ma" or sharp 4th.

Jhinjhoti is a beautiful raga, though, isn't it? I'm working on it now.

  • Personnally, i think that it is Shyam Kalyan...

  • This is Rag Jhinjhoti (Alap). I know because my own sitar instructor in Varanasi, UP, is a student of Parvez and I have been heavily playing/practicing this one forever and still ain't got it!! Look for it on two records: Sheer Magic (Live in Australia, Tabla by Anuradha Pal: my personal favorite)--VERY HARD TO FIND in the US or on Sitar Sublime. I picked em both up in India. Indeed this rag makes me cry and still has power over me---stunning beauty.

  • it's not jhinjhoti, it's sham kalyan

  • Unbelievably beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this.

  • Vilayat Khan Died in 2005, Now HE IS THE BEST SITAR PLAYER.

  • agree 1000 times,true

  • what raag is this??

  • could it be "Shyam Kalyan"?

  • you are a typical "princess" wanna be. You can't even spell, let alone a sense of appreciation for a masterpiece. No need to respond back as you might break a nail or two....

  • shaid bhai is god...in sitar.

  • Dude.. He is one of the greatest musicians of our time. If he plays so well, he can make any faces he wants to. If you can play so well, then go ahead make all faces you can! I am sure you can't even hold a sitar, let alone playing it..

  • Funny faces? he is making love with the sitar...,so how do you expect him to react?

  • Beautifully said ;)

  • Also, Those faces and reactions are part of Indian Culture and people. It is stupid to judge based on Western paradigms.

  • @riotiticaca And it's not even a Western paradigm: just look at Glenn Gould's and Leonard Bernstein's faces when they perform.

  • hesjust enjoying himself

    heslikeanold bluesman with those facestho

    haha

  • No doubt Shahid is one of the best today! however on a lighter note I have seen a lot of his performances up close, and he does make unnecessary and rather funny faces! it is what it is! I've also seen other equally good sitarists who dont.

  • awesome !!!!

The way he bends the string, he can play an entire melody on one fret!

  • saygılar üstat...

  • he's without doubt the finest at the moment but why does he have to make faces to impress us and wind up looking like a bollywood villan!! it doesnt go with the music

  • This is the artist in communion, sensitive and living with every note. He's not putting on a classical version of some cheesey american idol act if that is what you're alluding to. It is not to impress, it is the exposure and offering of something very intimate and private, of being fully in the music. It's unrestrained and true, just listen to it. Close your eyes if that helps.

  • I hope I did not upset your feelings about a great master- it was in a lighter vein that i made this remark. i understand that being absorbed in the music is one thing. But in the process of trying to indicate to the audience the subtleties of what they are doing, there often is a comic overacting that can turn out to be ludicrous. That is the musician's right and we are just listeners - eyes closed or open should make no difference, if the ears are open! And in any case Shahid is a great master

  • He is not trying to indicate anything to the audience. He probably is totaly oblivious of the audience. It's like he is feeling the swars through the progressions. Also, what is up with you - isn't great music enough. Here is a great master playing near his best and you are worried about his facial expressions.

  • his faces are not to impress you...you don't play music, do you?

  • It is sad that people who dont even understand the I of Indian music have commented. The ustad has his own method of playing sitar and he has played the fine nuances and notes very beautifully. Moshenuri, I feel you should disable comments section for such a beautiful piece of music.

  • just disabled...

    thank you

    Moshe Nuri

  • Geez. What jerks have commented.

If they don't like it then why are they listening?

    I think this sounds amazing.

Ever since I learned about the sitar I've wanted to play it.

    It's such an amazing instrument.

  • Nice leisure aalap of Shyam Kalyan
