MRSPINBAD BEING POOR IS PRIDE THAT ALLAH HAS BESTOWED UPON US. BEING HUMBLE IS EVEN MORE BEAUTIFULL. DO NOT DISRESPECT THIS USTAD WHO HAS SPENT YEARS OF HARD WORK TO ACHIEVE THIS LEVEL OF MASTERY UPON THE SITAR. LISTEN TO HIS ART AND ENJOY IT INSTEAD OF MAKING RUDE COMMENTS. HIS SITAR SOUNDS ALMOST AS BEAUTIFULL AS MOHAMMED RAFI SAHABS HEAVENLY VOICE.
@MrSpinbad he's far from poor, and that's just a western perception you are limited by. there is something about sitar that takes a master like him into a different place, he literally connects with the music.
my only quarrel is that he instrument is tuned to an open chord so the drone gets annoying, but the rest is very inavotive and very enlightening. something ill be looking to take across to my guitar
Ustad Shahid Parvez is an extraordinarily gifted performer. His command over meend, murki, taans etc is superb. However, I have one comment on this particular presentation of Raag Shyam Kalyan. It is this : He has several times used the phrase M( teevra) D N D P. It is not correct. It is the phrase of Raag Yaman Kalyan. Such use confuses the listener. It should not be used in Raag Shyan Kalyan
@bbdeshmukh21 There are people who will differ with you. Shyam Kalyan is a combination of raga Shyam and Kalyan. The phrase you mentioned is a Kalyan ang phrase and goes perfectly well in Shyam Kalyan. In fact it increases the beauty of the raga. The same phrase in used in Puriya Kalyan, Yaman, Yaman Kalyan and several other Kalyan ang ragas.
when i used to get drunk now and then earlier on i took guitar and imitated japanese or indian music.. sometimes with the slide, or by loosening strings and using bends and weirdness of disorderly tunings.
f-g around drunkenly with the music and instrument gives a lot of new ideas.
after all, nothing will lead you to the music but your ear, picking up, imitation and close and free cooperation with the instrument.
When I was a child, and before I started sitar, I used to think that - about musician's facial expressions. But, although I do not do it myself, I totally understand what they are doing. I can only speak for Indian classical music - it takes you to a unique state of beauty and intensity. Indian classical music is intimately connected to the land's spiritual roots. Even hanging on one meend can feel almost blissful.

My God, I can't stand watching this guy. He 'acts out' every damn note Looking at the audience. It's so creepy! Next thing y'know he'll start playing with his teeth or behind his back. Sounds good, looks creepy. No more of these vids for me thanks.
@lordshivatheboatman really i didn't know that it was so 'easy' and 'simple'. But can you kindly tell us why cant this be heard in anyone else's playing.? All trying the same thing yet their don't last this long. I request to put a video of yours where you are doing the same. may be we can learn from your playing.
Breaking wind is actually an integral part of Indian classical music. Performers often withhold their stools for days before a concert, in order to have a ready supply of gas. If you watch some performances you will see the accompanying musicians shake their heads now and again - this is to signify their appreciation of a particularly pungent emission. The main thing though is that the breaking of wind must be completely silent; a loud outburst can completely ruin the mood of a performance.
The Raga of the Mooladhara, the abode of Sri Ganesha and the continent of Australia. Bhairav is for the Sahasrara, the 1000 petalled lotus at the fontanelle bone area at the top of the head...(Latin for "fountain").
This is Rag Jhinjhoti (Alap). I know because my own sitar instructor in Varanasi, UP, is a student of Parvez and I have been heavily playing/practicing this one forever and still ain't got it!! Look for it on two records: Sheer Magic (Live in Australia, Tabla by Anuradha Pal: my personal favorite)--VERY HARD TO FIND in the US or on Sitar Sublime. I picked em both up in India. Indeed this rag makes me cry and still has power over me---stunning beauty.
you are a typical "princess" wanna be. You can't even spell, let alone a sense of appreciation for a masterpiece. No need to respond back as you might break a nail or two....
Dude.. He is one of the greatest musicians of our time. If he plays so well, he can make any faces he wants to. If you can play so well, then go ahead make all faces you can! I am sure you can't even hold a sitar, let alone playing it..
No doubt Shahid is one of the best today! however on a lighter note I have seen a lot of his performances up close, and he does make unnecessary and rather funny faces! it is what it is! I've also seen other equally good sitarists who dont.
he's without doubt the finest at the moment but why does he have to make faces to impress us and wind up looking like a bollywood villan!! it doesnt go with the music
This is the artist in communion, sensitive and living with every note. He's not putting on a classical version of some cheesey american idol act if that is what you're alluding to. It is not to impress, it is the exposure and offering of something very intimate and private, of being fully in the music. It's unrestrained and true, just listen to it. Close your eyes if that helps.
I hope I did not upset your feelings about a great master- it was in a lighter vein that i made this remark. i understand that being absorbed in the music is one thing. But in the process of trying to indicate to the audience the subtleties of what they are doing, there often is a comic overacting that can turn out to be ludicrous. That is the musician's right and we are just listeners - eyes closed or open should make no difference, if the ears are open! And in any case Shahid is a great master
He is not trying to indicate anything to the audience. He probably is totaly oblivious of the audience. It's like he is feeling the swars through the progressions. Also, what is up with you - isn't great music enough. Here is a great master playing near his best and you are worried about his facial expressions.
It is sad that people who dont even understand the I of Indian music have commented. The ustad has his own method of playing sitar and he has played the fine nuances and notes very beautifully. Moshenuri, I feel you should disable comments section for such a beautiful piece of music.
