Yishar koach! 5 minutes is really very very slow. Why does it take you so long? If I try my best to write slooooowwwwwwly it takes me 2 minutes including taggin.... And this is the Ashkenazi letters wich are influenced by Gothic script and are muchg more complicated, but the regular jewish letters takes no more than 1.5 minutes
@Smalskin The eatern european jewish people use a quill made of a turkey feather - like the sofer in this video. But the traditional Jewish pen is called 'qanneh' - a reed pen. Feather is a more convenient tool to use though.
@Smalskin you have to be jewish, use a specific quill with specific ink, have specific training and another Torah Scroll to copy from. 1 extra or missing letter ruins the whole thing. It takes 1 fucking year to copy the scroll.
Alot of the letters have curves. (Check out my other video in HQ to see what I'm talking about). Those curves are formed by pulling the quill from left to right and then moving downward. If you were to write from right to left it would be very hard to form those curves properly. From what I understand, most left handed scribes actually use a right handed quill and they position the parchment sideways, so they are actually writing sideways, this makes it somewhat easier.
how does one learn how to write like in the sefer torah? what kind of pen do u need? is there a learning dvd? or book?

hello, would it be wrong for a left-handed person to write the Sefer Torah?
interstellarwonder 2 years ago
No, it wouldn't be wrong it just would be harder.
schneurroth 2 years ago
thankx for the reply, why would be harder?A left-handed person writing right to left would seem to have an easier time at it.

It takes a full year to complete one Torah scroll which is why they cost about $30,000. This is his wages for that year.
